These objects in your bedroom could be affecting your health without you realizing it.

Part 1 of 2

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of rest and recovery. Yet, in many homes, it has quietly turned into an environment filled with substances and materials that can harm sleep quality and overall health. Some of these items even release toxic or potentially carcinogenic compounds that accumulate in the air you breathe each night.

Below, we outline the most common sources of indoor pollution in bedrooms and how to replace them with safer, healthier alternatives.

Objects That May Be Harming Your Health Without You Realizing

1. Old or Low-Quality Mattresses and Pillows

Many mattresses and pillows made from synthetic foams release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and toluene, both of which are linked to respiratory irritation and possible long-term carcinogenic effects.

What to do:
Opt for mattresses certified as toxin-free and use natural covers made from organic cotton or bamboo.

2. Chipboard or MDF Furniture

These materials often contain formaldehyde, an invisible gas used as a binding agent, which slowly releases into the air. Long-term exposure can cause eye, skin, and respiratory irritation and has been associated with nasopharyngeal cancer.

What to do:
Ensure proper room ventilation, seal furniture with natural coatings, or choose solid wood alternatives.

3. Curtains, Rugs, and Upholstery with Chemical Treatments

Many home textiles are treated with flame retardants or PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances), chemicals that can persist in the body, disrupt hormone balance, and increase the risk of certain cancers.

What to do:
Select natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, or wool without chemical coatings, and wash them regularly to remove dust and residues.

4. Scented Candles and Synthetic Air Fresheners
