Happy Soul Moral Stories

I Picked Up My 9-Year-Old Daughter From My Parents’ House After A Week-Long Business Trip To Europe. The Next Morning, I Made Her Scrambled Eggs, Toast, And The Strawberry Hearts She Always Loved, But She Only Stared At Her Plate. When I Asked What Was Wrong, She Whispered, “Grandma Said I Had To Remember The Right Answers.” I Never Imagined What My Own Parents Had Been Doing While I Was Gone.

Part 1 of 3

“Grandma Said I Shouldn’t Tell You.”

The first thing my nine-year-old daughter said after I picked her up from my parents’ house wasn’t “I missed you.”

It was barely louder than a whisper.

“Grandma said I shouldn’t tell you.”

She climbed into the passenger seat of my SUV instead of the back like she normally did. She kept both hands wrapped around the stuffed rabbit I’d given her on her fifth birthday. The fur around one ear had worn thin from years of being hugged.

I waited for her seat belt to click.

“Tell me what?” I asked.

Lily looked toward the windshield instead of at me.

“Nothing.”

She forced a smile.

It lasted less than a second.

My parents stood on their front porch waving as if everything had gone perfectly. My mother, Carolyn, even mouthed, “Drive safe.”

I waved back because Lily was watching.

Then I drove away.

I had been in Germany for six days meeting with a European client.

It wasn’t the first business trip I’d taken since my divorce three years earlier, and it probably wouldn’t be the last.

Whenever work required travel, I arranged everything weeks in advance.

Lily stayed with my parents because they had always insisted they loved helping.

Until that afternoon, I had never questioned it.

The drive home was unusually quiet.

Normally Lily filled every silence with stories about school, cartoons, or whatever book she had started reading.

That day she only held the rabbit tighter.

When we stopped at a red light, I noticed something else.

She flinched when my phone rang through the car speakers.

It was my mother.

I declined the call.

Lily slowly exhaled.

I pretended not to notice.

That evening I unpacked while Lily sat on my bedroom floor pretending to color.

The same page stayed open for almost twenty minutes.

She wasn’t drawing.

She was staring.

At dinner she barely touched her pasta.

When I asked whether she felt sick, she quickly shook her head.

“I’m just tired.”

After I tucked her into bed, I stood outside her bedroom door for several minutes.

She wasn’t asleep.

I could hear her whispering.

At first I thought she was talking to her stuffed rabbit.

Then I realized she was repeating the same sentence over and over.

“Don’t mess it up.”

A pause.

“Mom doesn’t have time for me.”

Another pause.

“I want to live with Grandma.”

My hand froze on the doorknob.

The Script

The next morning started like every other school day.

Toast.

Scrambled eggs.

Strawberries cut into little hearts.

Lily stared at the plate without eating.

Then she suddenly burst into tears.

Not the loud kind.

The exhausted kind that seems to come from somewhere much deeper.

She buried her face against the stuffed rabbit.

“I’m sorry.”

I pulled my chair beside hers.

“Sweetheart, nobody’s mad at you.”

She kept crying.

Finally she looked up.

“Grandma said I have to remember the right answers.”

For several seconds I couldn’t speak.

“What answers?”

Her breathing became uneven.

“Grandma and Grandpa took me to a lawyer.”

Everything inside me went completely still.

“They said it was just talking.”

“They told me to say you leave me alone all the time.”

“They told me to say you don’t love me anymore.”

She wiped her nose with her sleeve.

“They kept making me practice.”

I felt my coffee growing cold beside me.

“Practice what?”

She squeezed the rabbit so tightly I thought one of its seams might split.

Then she repeated the sentence exactly as if someone had pressed play.

“My mommy loves work more than me.”

The words sounded rehearsed.

Too smooth.

Too perfect.

Not like a nine-year-old.

I reached across the table and took her hand.

“Did you believe any of that?”

She shook her head immediately.

Then another wave of tears came.

“I told them you always come back.”

Her voice cracked.

“Grandma said that wasn’t the right answer.”

She talked for nearly an hour.

Sometimes she stopped.

Sometimes she cried.

Sometimes she apologized for things that weren’t even mistakes.

Carolyn and Richard had driven her to a downtown office building two days earlier.

A woman introduced herself as an attorney.

Lily didn’t understand why she was there.

She thought they were going out for ice cream afterward.

Instead, everyone kept asking questions.

“Who makes your breakfast?”

“How often does Mommy leave?”

“Wouldn’t you be happier living here?”

Whenever Lily answered something they didn’t like, my mother interrupted.

“Honey, remember what we practiced.”

If Lily said I always called before bedtime during business trips, they told her to start over.

If she said I never forgot her birthday, they ignored it.

When she cried because she wanted to go home, my father pulled out his phone.

He recorded her.

“That’s better,” he said.
