The Photograph Beside My Ultrasound

The First Crack in the Picture

At forty-five, after nearly four years of appointments, injections, disappointments, and careful hope, I finally became pregnant for the first time.

By the morning of my twelve-week ultrasound, I had already spent weeks waking before dawn just to place a hand over my stomach and reassure myself that the small life inside me was still there. My husband, Reid Holloway, had promised to attend the appointment, but shortly after six that morning, he received what he described as an urgent inspection assignment at a restaurant supply warehouse outside Lexington, Kentucky.

“I hate missing this,” he said as he kissed my forehead. “Send me a picture the second you’re finished.”

I believed him because believing Reid had become as natural as breathing. We had been married for nine years, and although the strain of fertility treatments had worn both of us thin, I thought our marriage had survived because we had endured the difficult years together.

At the clinic, Dr. Evelyn Warren dimmed the lights and moved the ultrasound wand slowly across my abdomen. The monitor showed a tiny shape surrounded by shifting shades of gray, and then the room filled with a rapid, steady rhythm.

“There’s your baby,” she said. “The heartbeat is strong, and the measurements look exactly where they should.”

I covered my mouth as tears slipped toward my ears. For years, I had imagined that moment, yet the reality felt quieter and more sacred than anything I had prepared myself to feel.

Then Dr. Warren stopped moving.

Her eyes had shifted away from the monitor toward the narrow window in the examination-room door. A man and a pregnant woman had just passed through the hallway, walking toward the private consultation rooms.

The man’s profile was visible for only a moment, but I knew the slightly bent nose, the sandy hair, and the gray jacket hanging from his shoulders.

It was Reid.

Dr. Warren looked at me, and whatever she saw in my face made her ask the technician to leave. After the door closed, she lowered herself onto the stool beside me.

“Eleanor, before you call your husband, I need you to listen carefully.”

My hands tightened around the edge of the examination table.

“Is the baby all right?”

“Your baby appears perfectly healthy.” She paused, choosing every word. “But the man who just walked past this room has accompanied another expectant patient here several times. He is listed as the person who should be contacted in an emergency.”

I stared at her, unable to make sense of the sentence.

“That can’t be Reid. He’s working near Frankfort today.”

Dr. Warren did not argue. Instead, she turned her computer monitor slightly. On the screen was an image captured by the clinic’s check-in camera earlier that morning.

Reid sat in the waiting room with his arm around a young brunette whose pregnancy was much farther along than mine. He was smiling at her with unmistakable tenderness, his hand spread protectively over hers.

That smile was what broke something inside me. It was the same smile he had given me when I showed him my positive test.

The woman’s name was Brooke Landry. She was thirty-two and twenty-six weeks pregnant.

Because Reid was expected to return for her after another appointment, Dr. Warren helped me leave through the staff entrance. I walked into the bright June sunshine holding an ultrasound photograph in one hand and my car keys in the other, carrying proof of the greatest blessing of my life alongside the first evidence that my marriage might have been built on something entirely different.

The Husband Who Came Home Smiling

I have almost no memory of the drive back to our house in Lexington. I remember sitting in the driveway after turning off the engine and listening to the metal beneath the hood contract in the summer heat. I remember pressing the ultrasound photograph against my chest. Most of all, I remember understanding that I could not confront Reid yet, because anger without evidence would only give him time to hide everything.

When he returned that evening, I was standing at the stove stirring tomato sauce.

He dropped his keys into the bowl by the door, wrapped his arms around my waist, and kissed my temple.

“How are my two favorite people?”

I turned and studied the face I had loved for almost a decade.

“The appointment went beautifully. The baby is healthy.”

His expression opened into delighted relief.

“Nell, that’s wonderful.”

He pulled me close, and I rested my cheek against his shoulder while wondering how many times that same jacket had carried the scent of another woman’s home.

Over dinner, Reid described an equipment inspection that had supposedly kept him on the road all day. He complained about defective freezer units, careless paperwork, and a supervisor who never returned calls. The story was detailed enough to sound true, and that frightened me more than a careless lie would have. Reid was not improvising. He had built an entire structure around his deception and had practiced living inside it.

That night, after he fell asleep, I took my phone into the bathroom and opened our joint savings account.

Eighteen months earlier, it had contained a little more than $43,000. Some of that money had paid for my treatment, but even after those expenses, the balance should have been close to $30,000.

It was $13,217.

I scrolled through months of withdrawals—$300 here, $475 there, then several recurring payments disguised beneath vague processing names. The missing amount was almost $27,000.

The next morning, I called my cousin, Laurel Pierce, a forensic accountant in Cincinnati. I told her everything without allowing myself to cry.

After a long silence, she said, “Do not confront him. Save every statement, every receipt, and every date. Right now, he thinks he controls the story. Let him keep thinking that while we find the facts.”

For the next two weeks, I became extraordinarily kind to my husband.

I made his coffee, packed his lunch, and kissed him goodbye. During my breaks from the community college library where I worked, I printed account records and organized them in a locked drawer. Laurel helped me trace the withdrawals, most of which had occurred around Berea, a town Reid visited frequently for work.

Then one Thursday, he took his company vehicle and left his personal SUV at home.
