Part 1 of 3

The Sentence He Could Never Take Back

Five minutes after our divorce became final, my ex-husband looked at our two daughters standing beside me and said something I knew I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Take the girls, Audrey. I have a son coming now.”

I stared at Nolan Mercer across the courthouse hallway in Alexandria, Virginia.

For eleven years, we had been married.

For eleven years, I had watched him kiss our daughters goodnight, attend birthday parties, hang their drawings on the refrigerator, and tell people he loved being a father.

Yet somewhere along the way, love had become tangled with disappointment.

Nolan had always wanted a son.

His mother, Patricia, wanted one even more.

Whenever our daughters, Caroline and Lucy, accomplished something, Patricia praised them before adding some variation of the same sentence.

“Of course, Nolan still deserves a boy someday.”

Caroline was ten now. Lucy was seven.

They were not consolation prizes.

They were my children.

And that morning, standing outside the courtroom, Nolan had reduced them to the daughters I could simply “take” because his girlfriend, Vanessa Cole, was expecting the boy his family had been celebrating for months.

I didn’t argue.

I picked up my handbag and said quietly, “All right.”

Nolan almost looked disappointed.

He had expected tears.

What he didn’t know was that the girls and I were leaving that afternoon.

And there was something else he had never bothered to understand about me.

I wasn’t simply the government employee he had spent years describing to his friends.

I was Colonel Audrey Whitmore, United States Army.

The Career My Husband Never Bothered to Understand

My military career had never been a secret.

Nolan simply hadn’t paid attention.

Three years earlier, when I was promoted to colonel, I invited him to the ceremony.

I reminded him twice.

Caroline wore a pale blue dress. Lucy carried a little bouquet she’d insisted on buying for me.

Nolan never arrived.

Twenty minutes before the ceremony, he sent me a message saying his golf game had run late.

That evening, he asked, “So, how was your Army thing?”

I told him it went well.

That was all.

Eventually, I stopped trying to make him interested in a life he had already decided wasn’t important.

Now I had received an overseas assignment connected to a multinational logistics command.

Because of our custody arrangement, Nolan had been formally notified of the relocation more than two months earlier.

His attorney had received everything.

Nolan had signed everything.

Apparently, he had read almost nothing.

At 12:42 that afternoon, while Caroline and Lucy waited with me inside a secure military facility, my phone rang.

Nolan.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“What?”

His voice sounded completely different from the confident man who had stood outside the courthouse hours earlier.

“Audrey, where are you?”

“Preparing to leave.”

“Leave where?”

“For my assignment.”

There was a pause.

“You’re actually taking the girls overseas?”

“Yes.”

“You can’t do that.”

“You signed the relocation authorization.”

Silence.

“What relocation authorization?”

I closed my eyes.

“Page eleven. Section six. You initialed it.”

“I thought that was about travel.”

“Your attorney explained it.”

“I was distracted.”

I knew exactly what had distracted him.

Vanessa.

The new house plans.

The nursery.

The son he believed would finally complete his life.

But that still didn’t explain the panic in his voice.

Then he said something unexpected.

“There’s a problem with Vanessa’s pregnancy.”

The Question in the Ultrasound Room

That morning, Nolan’s entire family had accompanied Vanessa to a private ultrasound appointment.

Patricia had apparently brought flowers.

Nolan’s father had already ordered personalized baby gifts bearing the Mercer surname.

They had spent months referring to the unborn child as “the Mercer heir.”

Then the doctor reviewed Vanessa’s dates.

Something didn’t line up.

The estimated timing suggested a possibility Nolan had never considered.

The baby might have been conceived earlier than Vanessa had claimed.

“The doctor says the dates are different from what Vanessa told me,” Nolan said.

“Dating isn’t proof of paternity,” I replied.

“I know.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

His answer came slowly.

“Because Vanessa admitted there was someone else.”

I said nothing.

“Audrey?”

“I’m here.”

“She says it happened before we were officially together.”

I almost reminded him that he had still been married to me during that period.

Instead, I asked, “What exactly do you want from me?”

“Can you delay your departure?”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“I need time to figure this out.”

“Then figure it out.”

“Audrey, please.”

For years, Nolan had expected me to reorganize my life whenever his became inconvenient.

I wasn’t doing it anymore.

“My daughters and I are leaving as scheduled.”

“My daughters?”

I looked through the glass partition.

Caroline was helping Lucy organize colored pencils inside her backpack.

Only hours earlier, Nolan had told me to take them.

Now that the son he wanted might not be his, they had suddenly become “my daughters” again.

“They’re our daughters, Nolan.”

He didn’t answer.

What Caroline Had Overheard

Less than an hour later, security informed me that Nolan and his mother were outside the installation requesting access.

I refused.

Nolan called immediately.

“Audrey, I need to see the girls.”

“I’ll ask them.”

“Don’t ask them. I’m their father.”

“Which means they deserve the courtesy of choosing whether they want to see you right now.”

I went into the family waiting room.

Caroline was reading while Lucy drew a house surrounded by stars.

I sat beside them.

“Your dad is outside.”

Lucy looked up.

“Why?”

“He wants to say goodbye.”

Caroline didn’t respond immediately.

Then she asked, “Did he know we were leaving today?”

“He knew we might relocate.”

Her eyes narrowed.
