Part 1 of 3

I Came Home Three Hours Early

My flight from Denver landed in Charlotte almost three hours ahead of schedule.

I didn’t tell anyone.

After four exhausting days away for work, all I wanted was to surprise my two-year-old twins, Owen and Maisie, and bring my mother some flowers. Mom had been staying with us while I traveled because her arthritis had gotten worse that winter, and I hated the thought of her being alone.

The moment I opened my front door, however, I knew something was wrong.

“Dorothy! The roast should have been ready twenty minutes ago!”

The voice belonged to my mother-in-law, Lenora.

I stopped in the entryway.

She was sitting comfortably on my sofa with a glass of wine beside her. My husband, Preston, was watching television a few feet away.

He barely looked up.

“And Mom needs fresh sheets in the guest room,” he called toward the kitchen. “Can you take care of those after dinner?”

Then I heard Maisie crying.

I dropped my suitcase and hurried into the kitchen.

My mother stood beside the stove, holding Maisie against one hip while stirring a heavy pot with her other hand. Owen clung to her leg.

Her face looked pale and exhausted.

Her hands were shaking.

“Mom?”

She turned sharply.

“Blythe? I thought you weren’t coming home until tonight.”

I took Maisie from her arms.

“Why are you cooking?”

She avoided my eyes.

“It’s nothing. Lenora wanted roast beef.”

From the living room came Lenora’s voice.

“Tell her not to ruin it this time!”

Preston laughed.

That laugh bothered me more than the words.

Then my mother turned her head.

I saw the dark mark beneath her cheekbone.

The Marks She Tried to Hide

I reached for Mom’s wrist.

She pulled away.

That frightened me.

“Mom, what happened to your face?”

“I bumped into something.”

I gently raised the sleeve of her cardigan.

Several fading marks circled her upper arm.

My stomach tightened.

“Who did this?”

“Blythe, please.”

Lenora entered the kitchen.

“Since you’re finally home, maybe you can explain to your mother that helping around the house isn’t beneath her.”

I stared at her.

“Helping?”

Preston appeared behind his mother.

“Don’t make this into something bigger than it is. Dorothy offered to help.”

My mother slowly shook her head.

Preston noticed.

His expression changed.

“Dorothy.”

He said her name quietly.

My mother stepped backward.

That tiny movement told me everything I needed to know.

I placed Maisie in her high chair, pulled out my phone and opened my banking app.

Three additional cards were connected to my primary account.

I froze all three.

Then I removed Preston’s authorization for the company SUV he had been driving.

Finally, I called our property manager.

“Effective immediately, no financial instruction from my husband or Lenora is to be approved without my written authorization.”

Preston’s phone began buzzing.

He looked at the screen.

Then again.

And again.

His face changed.

“What are you doing?”

I slipped my phone into my pocket.

“Giving you the opportunity to live on what you actually earn.”

Lenora laughed.

“My son pays for this house.”

I looked directly at her.

For eight years, I had allowed both of them to believe that.

What My Husband Never Knew

Preston had a good job as a regional sales director.

But his salary had never paid for our lifestyle.

Not the house.

Not the cars.

Not Lenora’s vacations.

Not the expensive restaurants or the summers at the coast.

Most of it came from assets my father had left me.

My father, Everett Caldwell, had spent decades building several commercial properties and quietly investing in small manufacturing companies across the Carolinas.

Preston knew I had inherited money.

He simply had no idea how much.

I had never lied to him.

I just stopped correcting his assumptions.

I packed two bags for the twins and helped Mom put on her coat.

“We’re leaving.”

Preston blocked the front door.

“You’re not taking my children anywhere.”

“Move.”

“Not until you apologize to my mother.”

I stared at him.

“Why does my mother have marks on her arm?”

Silence.

Lenora answered.

“She’s elderly and unsteady. She bumps into things.”

“I wasn’t asking you.”

Preston’s jaw tightened.

“She’s making it sound worse than it was.”

Mom began crying quietly.

I didn’t need another answer.

I walked outside with my children and my mother.

Preston followed us.

“Where are you going? A hotel?”

I didn’t respond.

Instead, I crossed our private residential street.

Directly opposite our house stood a large stone home that had appeared empty for almost three years.

Lenora laughed.

“What are you going to do, hide on somebody else’s property?”

I took a small electronic key from my purse and held it against the gate reader.

The black gates opened.

Preston stopped walking.

“How did you do that?”

I took Owen’s hand.

“Because I bought this house three years ago.”
