How to Use Onions to Get Rid of Pests: Rats, Flies, Lice, Bugs, Lizards, Mosquitoes, and Cockroaches

Part 1 of 2

Onions are a staple ingredient in many kitchens, but did you know they are also believed to help repel certain pests? While onions may have some deterrent properties due to their strong smell, their effectiveness varies and is not a scientifically proven solution for long-term pest control. Let’s explore the potential uses of onions for common pests and set realistic expectations.

1. Can Onions Deter Rats?

Rats have a sensitive sense of smell, and they may avoid areas with a strong onion odor initially. However, this effect is often short-lived as rats can adapt to the smell over time.

How to Use:

  • Place freshly cut onion slices near areas where rats enter, such as cracks, doors, or behind appliances.
  • Replace onion slices every 1–2 days to maintain the scent.

Important Note: This method is a temporary measure and should not replace more effective pest control methods, such as sealing entry points or using traps.

2. Onions and Flies

The strong scent of onions might deter some flies, but it is not a guaranteed solution. Essential oils like peppermint or lavender are often more reliable for keeping flies away.

How to Use:

  • Place fresh onion slices near windows or doors where flies are commonly found.
  • Combine with essential oils for enhanced effectiveness.

Fact Check: Onions can only provide mild and temporary relief from flies. Other natural repellents like apple cider vinegar traps or fly screens are better options.

3. Onion Juice for Lice

Onion juice contains sulfur compounds that may help in suffocating lice. While some small studies suggest its potential effectiveness, it is not as reliable or fast-acting as specialized lice treatments.

How to Use:

  • Blend onions to extract the juice, then apply it to the scalp.
  • Leave it for 30 minutes before washing thoroughly.
  • Repeat weekly until resolved.

Caution: Test for skin irritation before use.

4. Repelling Lizards

The strong smell of onions may deter lizards in certain areas temporarily.
