Prince William and Kate Middleton’s love story is one for the ages. They met while studying at St Andrews University, starting as friends before their bond deepened into romance.
The two shared many things in common, including a great sense of humor. One of their university friends once recalled a moment when Kate pretended to be William’s girlfriend to help him escape an awkward conversation at a party. Even before their relationship was official, their chemistry was undeniable.
Their University Years and Blossoming Romance
William and Kate’s relationship took a turn in 2002 when William attended a charity fashion show where Kate walked the runway in a now-famous see-through dress. From that moment, William saw her in a new light.
Later that year, they moved into an off-campus apartment at 13A Hope Street with friends. Their landlady initially resisted having male tenants but changed her mind upon learning one of them was Prince William. They soon became “ideal tenants,” and their friendship naturally evolved into something more.
William tried to impress Kate with his cooking, though his efforts often ended in disaster. “When I was trying to impress Kate, I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners… but I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire,” William once admitted, laughing.

A Love That Felt Meant to Be
Their connection was evident even before they started dating. Laura Warshauer, a university friend, recalled how William once bid £200 at a charity event just to secure a date with Kate. She also described their relationship as feeling as if “they had known each other forever.”
