Part 2 of 3

“You have no idea how much trouble you’ve just caused.”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“Neither do you.”

He laughed again.

“Oh, please. What are you going to do, Evelyn? Call one of your imaginary rich friends? You can’t even manage a checking account without asking me for help.”

I didn’t answer.

Because beneath the cuff of my jacket, the transmitter had vibrated a second time.

My signal had been acknowledged.

A moment later, hurried footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Adrian glanced toward the door.

“What now?”

A man’s voice answered from outside.

“Police. We need to speak with the patient.”

Adrian went still.

Dr. Bennett’s face drained of color.

The door opened, and two uniformed officers entered with the clinic supervisor.

Behind them stood Marcus Reed.

He’d been the head of my grandfather’s security team since I was a teenager.

The moment he saw me restrained on the table, his expression hardened.

“Miss Sterling, are you injured?”

Adrian turned toward him.

“Who are you calling Miss Sterling?”

Marcus didn’t even look at him.

“Evelyn, can you tell me what happened?”

I took a shaky breath.

“I want this strap removed. I want to leave. And I want the police to preserve the records from this room.”

One officer stepped toward the doctor.

“Sir, we’re going to need you to explain why the patient is restrained when she’s refusing treatment.”

Adrian moved forward.

“Now hold on! I’m her husband. You can’t just barge in here because she’s having another one of her little episodes.”

Marcus finally turned toward him.

“Mr. Whitmore, step back.”

Adrian scoffed.

“And who exactly are you supposed to be?”

“I’m here on behalf of the Sterling family.”

Adrian frowned.

“The what family?”

Marcus looked at the officer, then back at me.

“Her grandfather has been notified. He’s waiting for her.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Evelyn, what is he talking about?”

I didn’t answer.

The nurse released the strap around my wrist.

I sat up slowly, and Marcus placed my jacket around my shoulders.

Dr. Bennett looked from me to Marcus.

“Sterling? As in Charles Sterling?”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

The doctor’s lips parted.

Adrian stared at me.

“You told me you didn’t have any family.”

I stood carefully.

“I told you my parents were gone. You never asked about anyone else.”

“So you’ve been lying to me for four years?”

I looked at him.

“You brought me here to make sure I could never have another child, and that’s what you’re worried about?”

For once, he had nothing to say.

I left with Marcus and the officers, refusing to look back.

At a nearby hospital, another physician examined me and confirmed that my pregnancy appeared stable. I gave a statement, and my attorney began requesting the clinic’s records and security footage.

By late afternoon, I was sitting in my grandfather’s study.

Charles Sterling crossed the room the moment I walked in.

“Evelyn, sweetheart.”

I barely managed to say his name before I started crying.

He held me until I could breathe again.

When I told him what Adrian had done, he listened in silence.

Then he reached for his phone.

“I’m calling our attorneys.”

“Please do.”

“And that doctor is going to have some serious questions to answer.”

“I want everything documented. Every form, every appointment, every payment Adrian made.”

Grandpa studied me.

“You’re thinking about something else.”

I looked at the ultrasound photograph in my hand.

“Adrian said he gave me everything. He thinks I wouldn’t survive a week without his money.”

Grandpa’s expression shifted.

“Evelyn, there’s something you need to see.”

He opened his desk drawer and removed a blue folder.

Inside were financial reports for Whitmore Holdings.

Adrian’s company.

I recognized the figures immediately.

Its largest early investor was Meridian Capital.

My firm.

Four years earlier, I’d invested in Adrian’s business through Meridian, keeping my ownership private because I wanted him to build something he could be proud of.

I had continued supporting the company through later financing rounds.

Adrian had never asked who owned Meridian.

He simply enjoyed the money.

I turned another page.

There were emergency financing requests, overdue obligations, and correspondence showing that Adrian had recently tried to pressure Meridian into approving a new investment.

“He’s in trouble,” I said.

Grandpa nodded.

“His company has been struggling for months.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“I can’t answer that.”

I thought about Adrian’s contemptuous voice at the clinic.

You can’t even manage a checking account without asking me for help.

I closed the folder.

“I want our attorneys to review every agreement. No more special favors. No more money just because he’s my husband.”

Grandpa nodded.

“That’s your decision.”

I called Olivia Grant, Meridian’s managing director, and instructed her to review our exposure to Whitmore Holdings.

Over the next forty-eight hours, our legal and financial teams examined the company’s records.

What they found troubled me.

Adrian had repeatedly requested access to technical information held by Sterling subsidiaries, supposedly for a future business partnership.

Olivia had refused.

He had also been contacting investors with claims about Meridian that didn’t match our records.

Then Olivia called with news I hadn’t expected.

“Evelyn, Adrian’s requested a meeting at tomorrow night’s foundation gala.”

“Why?”

“He says he has documents that could ruin Meridian’s reputation. Some of the copies we’ve seen appear to have been altered.”

I sat straighter.

“Does he know I own the firm?”

“I don’t believe so.”

After we hung up, Marcus entered the study carrying a single sheet of paper.

He looked unusually serious.

“There’s something you should read.”

It was a transcript of a conversation obtained by investigators from a cooperating witness.

Vanessa’s name appeared near the top.

One sentence had been highlighted.

If Evelyn Sterling is still alive, activate the Black Protocol.

I read it twice.

Vanessa knew my real name.

She knew about my family.

And whatever she’d been planning hadn’t begun at the clinic.

I looked up at Marcus.

“How long has she known who I am?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said something that frightened me more than anything Adrian had shouted that morning.

“We’re trying to find out. But Evelyn, we don’t think your marriage was a coincidence.”

PART 2 — THE NAME THEY THOUGHT I HAD FORGOTTEN

The foundation gala was held in a downtown hotel ballroom filled with executives, donors, and people who had spent years pretending they didn’t care who sat at the most expensive tables.

I had attended events like it since childhood, although rarely under my real name.

That evening, I wore a dark-blue gown and my grandmother’s pearl earrings.

Marcus accompanied me through a private entrance.

“You don’t have to go in there,” he said.

“I know.”

“Your grandfather would rather have the lawyers handle everything.”

“They are handling it. I’m here because Adrian needs to understand I’m no longer going to disappear whenever he tells me to.”

I wasn’t planning a public confrontation.

Olivia had arranged a private meeting with Adrian and his counsel after the gala. Our attorneys had already warned us not to discuss the clinic incident in front of a crowd.

But Adrian found me first.

He entered with Vanessa on his arm.

She wore a silver dress and smiled as though they were arriving at their engagement party.

When Adrian saw me near the ballroom entrance, he stopped.

Then he walked over.

“Well, look who’s back.”

I said nothing.

His eyes moved over my dress.

“Three days away from home, and suddenly you’re dressing like this? Who’s paying for it?”

Vanessa gave a small, uncomfortable laugh.

“Adrian, don’t start.”

But she didn’t step away from him.

“Evelyn, he was worried about you,” she said.

I looked directly at her.

“Was he worried before or after he discussed a procedure I never agreed to?”

Her smile vanished.

Adrian moved closer.

“Watch what you’re accusing people of.”

“I have a lawyer. I’ll be careful.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.”

I stepped around him.

“Then stop following me.”

For the next hour, I stayed with Olivia and several foundation trustees. Adrian watched us from across the room, visibly irritated.

The final auction item was a historic sapphire necklace donated by a private collector.

Bidding climbed rapidly.

When it reached $2.8 million, Adrian raised his paddle.

He looked toward me, clearly enjoying the attention.

I had no intention of buying jewelry to prove anything to him.

But the foundation’s director approached Olivia and quietly confirmed that the necklace was being purchased by a donor consortium in which Meridian had already committed funds.

Olivia nodded toward me.

“Would you like to make the final bid?”

I considered it.

Then I raised my paddle at the agreed amount.

The auctioneer announced the sale.

Adrian laughed loudly enough for several nearby tables to hear.

“You’ve got to be kidding. She can’t afford that.”

A few guests turned.

“Check her finances,” he told the auctioneer. “My wife doesn’t even have an account like that.”

Olivia stood.

“Mr. Whitmore, the foundation has already verified the buyer’s funding.”

Adrian recognized her.

“Olivia. Good. I need to speak with you about Meridian.”

“Our attorneys have a meeting scheduled.”

He gestured toward me.

“Then explain why my wife is pretending she can spend millions of dollars.”
