“That makes this considerably easier, because the corporate ownership is independently documented.”
The more they examined Daniel’s recent conduct, however, the larger problem became.
For three years, Daniel had quietly used Alder Ridge-controlled assets as collateral support in several investment arrangements connected to his venture capital firm. Some transactions had been authorized under limited corporate resolutions, but others appeared to have exceeded the permissions Katherine remembered granting.
Melissa’s expression changed after reviewing one particular credit facility.
“Did you approve this guarantee?”
“No, because I have never seen that page before tonight.”
The signature beneath Katherine’s printed name looked authentic at first glance, but the internal approval number did not correspond with any board resolution in Alder Ridge’s records.
That discovery changed Katherine’s priorities.
Her marriage was collapsing, but something much larger might be hidden underneath it.
By 2:30 in the morning, Melissa had contacted an independent forensic accountant and requested preservation notices for the relevant corporate systems. Katherine also authorized Alder Ridge to terminate Daniel’s residential license and begin a previously approved renovation plan that involved removing the western and central wings.
The demolition crews were not summoned for revenge.
The renovation had existed on paper for nearly eighteen months, and Daniel had repeatedly delayed it because he preferred the current layout.
Katherine merely removed the obstacle.
Part 5 — Police Arrive at the Estate

By 8:20 the next morning, Greenwich police had arrived after receiving multiple calls from Daniel, Madison, two neighbors, and an increasingly frustrated member of the construction crew.
Sergeant Robert Ellis, a veteran police supervisor accustomed to expensive property disputes, approached the temporary fencing while Daniel hurried toward him.
“Sergeant, I want these people arrested for trespassing and destruction of private property.”
Robert reviewed the town permit, utility clearance, corporate deed documents, and letter from Alder Ridge’s counsel.
After several minutes, he looked back at Daniel.
“This appears to be a civil ownership dispute involving a corporate property structure, and the contractor has valid municipal permits.”
Daniel’s face became crimson.
“They are tearing apart a house that belongs to me.”
“Then your attorney can seek an injunction, but I cannot arrest licensed contractors because you disagree with the ownership documents they presented.”
Madison approached wearing Katherine’s cream-colored coat, which she had taken from the mudroom because most of her belongings were still inside the damaged wing.
“Surely you can stop them until somebody figures out what is happening.”
Robert looked toward the active site.
“The building department already reviewed their safety plan, and nobody here has presented me with a court order stopping the work.”
Daniel pulled out his phone.
It contained fourteen missed calls.
Three came from his board chairman, four came from the firm’s general counsel, and the remainder came from bankers and accountants.
His personal assistant had sent a final message asking him to call immediately because the board had convened an emergency session.
For the first time that morning, Daniel stopped shouting.
Part 6 — Katherine Returns With a Briefcase
Shortly before nine o’clock, a black Lincoln Navigator entered the circular drive and stopped beyond the construction barrier.
Katherine stepped from the passenger side wearing a navy tailored suit and carrying a slim leather briefcase. She looked neither triumphant nor angry, which somehow unsettled Daniel more than visible rage would have done.
He moved toward her until Robert Ellis raised one hand and quietly kept distance between them.
“Katherine, tell them to stop this immediately, because we can still resolve whatever you think happened last night.”
Katherine glanced toward the partially dismantled western wing.
“Last night you told me that I had built a beautiful house on property that belonged to you, and then you ordered me to leave while your employee moved into my bedroom.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I was angry, and everyone says things they regret during a marriage ending badly.”
“You also instructed your attorneys to send Alder Ridge a notice claiming you had exclusive residential authority.”
Daniel looked confused.
Katherine opened her briefcase.
“That notice triggered a review of the original development agreement, which is why your attorneys should have read the documents before sending it.”
She handed him a copy.
Daniel scanned several pages before shaking his head.
“This still does not explain why my accounts are being restricted.”
Katherine’s expression changed slightly.
“I did not freeze your personal accounts.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who did?”
“Your banks did, after my attorneys notified them that several corporate guarantees apparently relied on Alder Ridge collateral without valid board authorization.”
For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.
Madison looked from one of them to the other.
“What exactly does that mean?”
Katherine answered without taking her eyes from Daniel.
“It means financial institutions are checking whether my husband pledged assets his company did not have permission to pledge.”
Part 7 — The Empire Beneath the Marriage

Daniel’s phone rang again.
This time he answered.
His board chairman spoke for less than two minutes, but Daniel’s posture changed before the call ended.
When he finally lowered the phone, his face had lost nearly all its color.
“They suspended me.”
Katherine showed no surprise.
“Then they probably found more than I did.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you send them?”
“Only documents belonging to my company, because your board can investigate everything else without my assistance.”
The venture capital firm had already discovered that Daniel used side letters and personal assurances to support several high-risk investments without complete approval from the firm’s risk committee. Those transactions had not yet produced catastrophic losses, but they created potential exposure large enough that the board could not ignore them once Alder Ridge questioned the collateral.
Madison slowly released Daniel’s arm.
“What happens to the apartment in Manhattan?”
Daniel turned toward her sharply.
