Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories
Part 2 of 3

Richard stepped outside and almost closed the door behind him.

“Ryan knew you were pregnant.”

“I know.”

“Then you should understand he made his own decision.”

My grip tightened on the carrier handle.

“What decision?”

“To leave.”

“Then he can tell me himself.”

Richard’s voice became colder.

“You need to go home.”

I set Lucy’s carrier carefully beside my feet.

“I’m not leaving until Ryan tells me he doesn’t want his daughter.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t make a scene.”

Then the front door opened behind him.

“Dad.”

I knew that voice.

Richard froze.

Ryan stood in the doorway.

He looked thinner.

His hair was longer.

There were dark circles beneath his eyes.

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Ryan looked down at Lucy.

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“She’s thirteen days old.”

Ryan looked at me.

“Hannah—”

“Thirteen.”

He stepped toward the carrier.

I moved between them.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

I held up the letter.

“You knew who I was.”

Ryan looked at the handwriting.

Then at me.

“Yes.”

Richard turned sharply.

“Ryan, don’t.”

Ryan ignored him.

“I knew.”

I nodded once.

“Then tell me why you disappeared.”

The Price of Leaving

Ryan looked toward his father.

Richard shook his head.

Ryan didn’t care.

“The night you told me you were pregnant, I came here.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted the whole truth about your mother.”

I laughed quietly.

“You had almost two years to tell me about her.”

“I know.”

“Don’t say that.”

He went silent.

“What happened that night?”

Ryan put his hands into his pockets.

“My grandfather left me a trust. About 1.6 million dollars. My father controlled it.”

Richard stepped forward.

“This is private.”

Ryan looked at him.

“Not anymore.”

Then he turned back to me.

“Dad offered to release the money if I stayed away from you until after the baby was born.”

I stared at him.

“He paid you to disappear?”

“I didn’t think of it that way.”

“Then how did you think of it?”

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck.

“I thought if I got out from under him financially, I could come back and give you and the baby a real life.”

I looked at Lucy.

Her hospital bracelet was still around her ankle.

“I went to every appointment alone.”

Ryan said nothing.

“At thirty-five weeks, my blood pressure went crazy. They admitted me. Lucy came early.”

His eyes dropped.

“I didn’t know.”

“Exactly.”

I looked straight at him.

“You made sure you wouldn’t know.”

Richard opened the door wider.

“This is finished.”

Ryan turned toward him.

“No.”

Then he looked at me again.

“The trust was released three days ago.”

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“Three days?”

“Yes.”

“She’s thirteen days old.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“I know.”

I looked away.

“Why didn’t you come immediately?”

Ryan went inside and returned with a folder.

Richard’s face changed.

“Put that away.”

Ryan ignored him.

“Because I found something about your mother.”

Inside the folder was an old settlement agreement.

My mother’s name was typed across the top.

Jennifer Miller.

The document claimed she had accepted money and agreed not to bring any claims against Richard connected to her employment.

At the bottom was a signature.

I stared at it.

“She never told me about this.”

“Because she never got the money.”

Ryan handed me a bank record.

The payment had been redirected to an account tied to a company Richard controlled.

I looked at Richard.

“Did you forge her signature?”

Richard straightened one cuff.

“You have no idea what happened back then.”

“Then explain it.”

“Your mother was compensated.”

“Where did the money go?”

He didn’t answer.

A car pulled into the driveway behind mine.

Grandpa Robert got out.

I almost laughed.

Of course he had followed me.

He walked up the path slowly.

Richard looked more uncomfortable seeing Grandpa than he had seeing me.

Grandpa stopped at the porch.

“Hello, Richard.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“Robert.”

Grandpa looked at the folder.

Then at me.

“So you found it.”

What Protection Had Cost Us

Grandpa climbed the steps.

Richard folded his arms.

“Whatever Jennifer told you was one-sided.”

Grandpa nodded.

“She told me you offered her money.”

Richard said nothing.

“She told me you bought her jewelry she returned.”

Still nothing.

“She told me you fired her when she refused you.”

Richard looked at me.

“Your mother misunderstood my intentions.”

Grandpa’s expression didn’t change.

“Jennifer sold her car six months later.”

I turned toward him.

“What?”

“She couldn’t get another childcare job. She started cleaning offices at night.”

I remembered waiting for her to come home in the mornings.

Grandpa continued.

“She spent years thinking she’d done something wrong simply because she said no to you.”

Richard looked bored.

“That happened more than twenty years ago.”

“Yes.”

Grandpa pointed toward the folder.

“And apparently you’ve been counting on that.”

Richard turned to Ryan.

“This is why I told you not to involve yourself.”

Ryan laughed once.

“You mean why you paid me not to involve myself.”

“I gave you independence.”

“You put a price on my absence.”

Richard looked at him.

“And you accepted it.”

That sentence silenced everyone.

Because Richard was right.

Ryan had accepted it.

Grandpa looked at him.

“You knew Hannah was Jennifer’s daughter?”

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.”

“From the beginning?”

“Yes.”

Grandpa stared at him.

“Then you’re not innocent here.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

Grandpa shook his head.

“No. Hannah knows. You are only starting to understand.”

Ryan said nothing.

“You decided she couldn’t handle the truth about your family. Then you decided she could handle pregnancy alone. Then you decided money would make the waiting worthwhile.”

Ryan looked toward Lucy.

“I was trying to protect them.”

Grandpa’s voice became quieter.

“That’s the problem.”

Ryan looked at him.

“Your father protected his reputation. Jennifer protected Hannah from this family. I protected Jennifer’s secret. You protected Hannah with money she never asked for.”

I looked down at Lucy.

Everyone had made decisions for me.
