Walter’s recording destroyed that protection by capturing their intentions in their own voices.

She did not attend the initial hearings because her doctors advised her to avoid unnecessary stress during the pregnancy. Walter attended on her behalf, watching silently as Preston entered the courtroom without the polished confidence he once displayed before reporters.

Diane also appeared transformed. The tailored clothing and pearls remained, but the authority behind them had disappeared. Neither she nor Preston looked toward Walter when prosecutors presented the recording from the maintenance building.

Doctor Lowell attempted to portray himself as a physician manipulated by a wealthy family. The medical records, payment schedules, and testimony from his employees contradicted that defense. Investigators established that he had knowingly increased Olivia’s medication despite being informed of her pregnancy and despite the absence of any legitimate psychiatric diagnosis.

Although the final sentencing process would take time, the evidence ensured that Preston, Diane, Lowell, and their accomplices faced the possibility of decades behind bars. Hawthorne House would never again operate beneath the appearance of a private mountain retreat.

Walter did not celebrate their destruction. He had witnessed enough federal cases to understand that punishment could not erase trauma. His priority remained Olivia’s recovery and the safe arrival of her child.
