Rebecca looked at me with desperate expectation.

Even after everything, they still believed I was the trusting wife who could be manipulated one final time.

I closed my laptop and went upstairs.

Daniel stood so quickly that his chair struck the floor.

“You have absolutely no idea what you are interfering with, and you could destroy everything we have built.”

I looked directly at him.

“You brought your mistress into my home, convinced me she was dying, used my compassion as evidence supporting a financial deception, moved money through accounts carrying my name, and now you want to accuse me of destroying something.”

His voice rose.

“That money came from years of work at my shop, and I refuse to watch lawyers take everything I earned.”

“Then you should have defended your business through lawful legal proceedings instead of hiding assets behind a fabricated terminal illness.”

Rebecca began crying, although I had finally learned not to believe tears simply because I could see them.

She packed that afternoon.

There was no silk scarf, no trembling walk, and no need for anyone to carry her luggage.

Rebecca lifted a heavy suitcase herself, walked directly outside, and loaded it into the rideshare waiting in the driveway with remarkable strength for a woman supposedly approaching death.

Daniel remained temporarily because Denise advised me not to complicate the developing divorce proceedings by acting impulsively regarding the residence.

We moved into separate bedrooms and communicated only when necessary.

Whatever marriage had existed between us was already finished.

I completed the divorce with documentation demonstrating that my independent earnings and personal financial activity were separate from Daniel’s scheme.
