My Father Owed Nearly Forty Million Dollars, So A Billionaire Offered Him One Escape: My Hand In Marriage In Exchange For Temporary Relief. My New Husband Thought Taking Me Would Destroy My Father. I Almost Smiled When I Told Him The Truth: “You Did Not Steal His Beloved Daughter. You Took Away The Final Investment He Planned To Liquidate.”

Part 2 of 3

“Anticipating manipulation became necessary, not impressive.”

That evening, hundreds of camera flashes greeted them at the museum.

Clara wore a deep sapphire gown.

Julian kept one hand firmly around her waist.

When a famous fashion editor approached them, Clara looked at her husband with flawless affection.

“Once Julian finally proposed, waiting another day seemed completely unreasonable.”

Julian adapted instantly.

He lifted Clara’s hand and kissed it.

“Patience has never been one of my strengths where Clara is concerned.”

The photographs spread online before dinner ended.

Speculation about debt was quickly replaced by headlines about sudden romance.

Later, while they danced beneath the illuminated glass ceiling, Clara noticed her father near the ballroom entrance.

Richard’s tuxedo was wrinkled.

His eyes looked bloodshot.

His unsteady posture suggested he had been drinking.

Julian’s hand tightened slightly around Clara’s waist.

“Do you want security to remove him?”

Clara watched the man who had exchanged her future for temporary financial survival.

Then she shook her head.

“Keep dancing.”

Julian looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because watching helplessly will punish him more effectively.”

They continued moving across the floor.

Richard remained outside their orbit.

For perhaps the first time in his life, he seemed to understand that his daughter was no longer waiting to be repositioned on his financial chessboard.

Part 3: Richard Wants His Investment Returned

Several days later, Richard forced his way into the Back Bay penthouse after shoving past Julian’s young assistant.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Clara had adopted immediately began barking from beneath a marble console table.

Richard shouted through the apartment.

“Where is that ungrateful daughter who blocked every number I used?”

Clara calmly closed her book.

She reached down and stroked the dog, whom she had named Winston.

“Apparently finding me required more effort than manipulating me.”

Richard slammed one hand onto the glass coffee table.

“Your husband foreclosed on my Cape Cod estate.”

His face had turned red.

“His attorneys told me to leave before tomorrow afternoon.”

Clara remained seated.

“Ashford Capital reclaimed property securing a defaulted loan.”

Richard leaned toward her.

“Transfer one hundred thousand dollars into my account.”

He pointed at her.

“Otherwise I will tell every newspaper in Boston that this marriage is a fraudulent contract and you were sold to protect me from prosecution.”

Before Clara could answer, Julian’s voice came from the private elevator.

“Call whichever newspaper you prefer.”

Richard turned.

Julian stepped into the room.

“Then find out how seriously reporters take an indicted fraudster.”

Richard immediately changed expression.

A false smile appeared.

“Julian, this is merely a private disagreement between relatives.”

Julian stopped several feet away.

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“You entered my home without permission.”

He looked at Richard.

“Then you attempted to blackmail my wife.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Julian continued.

“Threaten Clara again and my attorneys will dismantle whatever remains of your company.”

He paused.

“Afterward, I will personally deliver every concealed record we possess to federal investigators.”

Richard turned toward Clara instead.

His face twisted with drunken bitterness.

“You think this man loves you?”

Clara stiffened.

“He married you because I forced you into his bed to save myself.”

Julian answered before Clara could.

“Her reasons for marrying me no longer concern you.”

Something unexpected moved through Clara’s chest.

There was absolute protection in Julian’s voice.

Richard heard it too.

He looked between them.

Then he moved toward the elevator without making another demand.

That night, Clara found Julian sitting alone beside the darkened bar with a glass of whiskey.

Winston, whom Julian had described that morning as an intolerable creature, was asleep across one of his expensive slippers.

Clara leaned against the doorway.

“You did not have to protect me from Richard.”

Julian slowly rotated the whiskey glass.

“For years, I imagined his humiliation would satisfy me.”

He looked toward her.

“Tonight, when he looked at you, he did not see a daughter.”

His expression changed.

“He saw an investment that had escaped his control.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

“And I realized I had treated you in exactly the same unforgivable way.”

Clara’s defenses rose immediately.

“Do not pity me because you have unexpectedly developed a conscience.”

Julian shook his head.

“This is not pity.”

Then he said the words carefully.

“I regret what I did.”

Three days later, Julian arranged for his private aircraft to take them out of Boston.

They traveled to his secluded mountain estate near Stowe, Vermont.

The plan was simple.

Escape reporters.

Escape Richard.

Find silence.

Neither of them expected the historic blizzard approaching the mountains.

Part 4: The Night Revenge Stopped Mattering

The storm arrived shortly after their aircraft landed.

Roads disappeared beneath deep snow.

Power lines failed throughout the region.

Julian’s property retained electricity through emergency generators, but cellular service and internet connections vanished.

Rescue helicopters could not fly because the winds were too violent.

During the first evening, Clara complained of chills and exhaustion.

By the following morning, influenza had developed into severe pneumonia.

She collapsed before reaching the living-room sofa.

Julian caught her before her head struck the floor.

Her skin burned beneath his hands.

Her breathing was shallow and frighteningly uneven.

“Clara.”

He touched her face.

“Open your eyes. Tell me you can hear me.”

No medical team could reach the estate.

Julian followed the emergency instructions stored within the property’s medical system.

He activated additional heat.

Monitored Clara’s temperature.

Used the medication available in the house.

Placed cool compresses over her forehead.

Throughout the night, he sat beside the bed and persuaded her to drink small amounts of water whenever she woke.

Fever carried Clara through broken dreams.

In some of them, Owen appeared.

He asked why she had been selected to pay for Richard’s crimes.

Sometimes Clara heard Julian calling her name.

His voice seemed distant beneath the wind shaking the house.

Once, through the fever, she heard him say,

“You cannot leave me after I brought you here.”

His voice cracked.

“I will never forgive myself.”

By the fifth morning, Clara’s temperature finally began to fall.

When she opened her eyes, Julian was asleep awkwardly in an armchair beside the bed.

Several days of beard shadow covered his face.

Dark exhaustion circled his eyes.

Clara moved slightly.

Julian woke immediately.

Relief transformed him.

“You are awake.”

He leaned forward.

“Your fever finally broke.”

Clara studied him.

“You somehow look worse than the patient.”

For the first time in days, Julian almost smiled.

He helped her sit up.

Then offered warm water.

Clara drank slowly.

“Were you here the entire storm?”

Julian looked toward the floor.

“When your temperature reached one hundred and four, leaving the room became impossible.”

He set the glass aside.

His hands folded together.

Then he said,

“I thought Owen’s death destroyed whatever tenderness remained inside me.”

Clara watched him carefully.

“Then your breathing became weaker.”

His voice softened.

“And I realized losing you would destroy something I could never rebuild.”

Clara was still ill enough to feel vulnerable.

She refused to let that vulnerability create a false conclusion.

“Do not confuse fear, guilt, or responsibility with love.”

Julian looked directly at her.

“I have not used that word.”

She waited.

“The man who married you for revenge has not earned the right to say it.”

There was no calculation left in his expression.

“I do not want revenge against Richard through you anymore.”

He continued.

“I want you to recover.”

A pause.

“I want you to remain here, argue with me, challenge everything I say, and keep filling my peaceful house with that unbearable dog.”

The blizzard trapped them in Vermont for several weeks.

No internet.

No business meetings.

No society reporters.

No Richard.

Without an audience, the contractual marriage began losing the purpose for which it had been created.

Julian cooked badly but persistently.

Clara recovered beside the fireplace.

They played chess.

Argued about novels.

Walked through snow once her strength returned.

Julian’s careful attention slowly weakened defenses Clara had spent years constructing.

The man who had purchased her as an instrument of revenge gradually became the only person beside whom she felt truly safe.

That frightened her more than his hatred ever had.

Hatred demanded nothing except resistance.
