Life Short Tales Moral Stories

“I’m Pregnant With Your Husband’s Baby, And I Think It’s Time You Stepped Aside.” The Woman Sitting In My Examination Room Said With A Smile. I Thought My Twelve-Year Marriage Was Over. But The Affair Never Existed. The Real Betrayal Was Worse—My Mother-In-Law Had Paid Her To Destroy My Marriage.

Part 2 of 3

“Evelyn, I swear I’ve never had a relationship with that woman, and I’ve repeatedly told her to stop contacting me.”

I asked why he hadn’t mentioned the messages.

Andrew rubbed his jaw.

“She started making accusations several weeks ago, and I thought ignoring her would eventually make the harassment stop.”

I stared at him.

“You knew a stranger was threatening to involve your mother and claim you fathered her baby, yet you decided your wife didn’t need to know?”

He lowered his eyes.

“I was frightened that telling you would create another confrontation with Mom, and I handled the situation terribly.”

Andrew had spent years avoiding disagreements with Margaret.

Whenever she criticized my demanding career or complained that I had stolen her son, he tried changing the subject instead of defending me.

His reluctance had gradually become an accepted feature of our marriage.

Now that habit had exposed us to something much more dangerous.

“Avoiding a problem doesn’t make it disappear, Andrew, and keeping me uninformed meant I had to face that woman without knowing anything about her threats.”

He apologized without attempting another excuse.

I believed his denial more strongly after hearing his explanation, although I remained furious about his secrecy.

We agreed to visit Margaret that evening.

If Paige was exploiting her financially, we needed to understand the arrangement.

But I also wanted to know why Margaret seemed so determined to believe a stranger over her own son.

Part 4: The Trap Behind My Mother-in-Law’s Tears

Margaret welcomed Andrew warmly when we arrived at her house that evening.

She embraced him for nearly a minute before acknowledging me with a restrained nod.

Her living room smelled of lemon furniture polish and freshly brewed tea.

Andrew sat opposite her and explained that Paige had been making false claims about a relationship and pregnancy.

Margaret waved dismissively.

“That poor girl has done nothing but help me, Andrew, and I don’t understand why you’re allowing Evelyn to treat her like some kind of criminal.”

I remained calm.

“Has Paige asked you for money, Margaret, or have you been paying her expenses?”

She lifted her chin.

“Even if I have helped her financially, that’s my decision, and I don’t need your permission to support someone who actually cares about me.”

Andrew leaned forward.

“Mom, we’re worried that somebody may be taking advantage of your loneliness, and we can arrange professional help if you’re struggling at home.”

Her expression changed immediately.

She lowered her shoulders, reached for a tissue, and began describing how difficult everyday tasks had become.

She complained that the stairs frightened her and that evenings seemed unbearably lonely.

Then she looked directly at me.

“If Paige isn’t welcome anymore, perhaps I’ll simply have to move into your house, unless you’d rather abandon your own mother in some miserable nursing facility.”

I felt the manipulation settle over the room.

Andrew looked uncomfortable.

“Nobody is abandoning you, Mom. We only want to discuss arrangements that would keep you safe.”

Margaret dabbed her eyes.

“I’ve given my entire life to raising you, Andrew, and now I’m apparently expected to beg for somewhere to belong.”

I suggested exploring home-care services and other options without making immediate decisions about living arrangements.

She accused me of being coldhearted.

During the discussion, something increasingly troubled me.

Margaret hadn’t asked whether Andrew had actually fathered Paige’s baby.

She seemed remarkably uninterested in proving or disproving the accusation that supposedly threatened her son’s marriage.

Instead, every conversation returned to her desire to move into our house.

When we finally left, Andrew appeared shaken.

“Maybe Mom really does need more support than we’ve realized,” he said.

I agreed that she deserved appropriate care.

“But moving into our home isn’t something she can demand simply because she dislikes the alternatives.”

As we reached the driveway, I remembered another question I wanted to ask.

I told Andrew to wait beside the car while I returned to the house.

The front door hadn’t fully closed.

From the hallway, I heard Margaret speaking on the phone.

Her voice was completely different from the fragile, tearful voice she had used moments earlier.

“I specifically told you not to approach Evelyn until I had everything arranged!”

I stopped.

Margaret continued angrily.

“Your job was to make her doubt Andrew, not march into her medical practice announcing you’re pregnant with his child!”

My heart began pounding.

I quietly started recording.

“If Evelyn had demanded a paternity test, the entire arrangement would have fallen apart, Paige. I promised to support you and the baby until you were settled, but you were supposed to follow my instructions.”

I listened, hardly able to believe what I was hearing.

Margaret wasn’t being manipulated by Paige.

She had hired Paige to manipulate us.

Her intention was to make me doubt my husband, leave our marriage, and remove the woman she believed had taken Andrew away from her.

I carefully stepped outside and hurried toward the car.

Part 5: The Recording That Exposed Everything

Andrew was leaning against our car when I returned.

He straightened immediately after seeing my expression.

“Evelyn, what happened? You look as though somebody just told you something terrible.”

I explained what I had overheard.

He shook his head before I finished.

“My mother wouldn’t invent a pregnancy to destroy our marriage, Evelyn. She can be difficult, but she would never do something like that.”

I didn’t argue.

Instead, I played the recording.

Margaret’s voice filled the quiet driveway.

Andrew listened without moving.

As the conversation continued, his expression shifted from disbelief to horror.

When the recording ended, he lowered his head.

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

“I spent years defending her because I thought she was lonely and afraid of losing me,” he finally whispered.

I placed my hand on his arm.

“She may genuinely feel lonely, Andrew, but loneliness doesn’t excuse paying someone to destroy another person’s marriage.”

He looked toward the illuminated windows.

Then he straightened.

“We’re going back inside, because I need to ask her why she thought she had the right to do this.”

We entered the living room together.

Margaret looked surprised.

“Andrew, sweetheart, did you forget something?”

He remained standing.

“Did you pay Paige to tell Evelyn that I was the father of her baby?”

Margaret dismissed the question as ridiculous.

I played the recording again.

Her expression changed immediately.
