Then My Pretend Boyfriend Placed A Gift Box On The Table And Said, “Actually, Derek, I Brought Something You Might Recognize From Your Previous Career.” His Smile Vanished Instantly.

Part 1 of 3

Part 1: The Wedding Gift Nobody Expected

The evening my ex-husband married the woman he had cheated on me with, I brought a handsome coworker as my pretend boyfriend because I couldn’t bear the thought of arriving alone and giving my former husband another opportunity to humiliate me.

I never imagined my companion would bring a wedding present capable of unraveling the elaborate story my ex-husband had spent years telling about himself.

My name is Megan Collins, and I had spent thirteen years listening to Derek Collins explain why everything wrong in our marriage was somehow my responsibility.

We had two daughters, ten-year-old Harper and three-year-old Lily, whose happiness mattered far more to me than any satisfaction I might gain from confronting their father.

After our divorce, Derek quickly announced his engagement to Brianna Foster, the younger fitness instructor with whom he had become involved while we were still married.

He insisted that attending their wedding would demonstrate my maturity and establish a positive example for our daughters.

I suspected he simply wanted an audience for his supposedly extraordinary new life.

Nevertheless, I agreed because Harper desperately wanted both parents present.

My coworker Nathan Brooks had listened patiently when I mentioned the invitation.

We worked at the same consulting firm, although his responsibilities involved financial compliance and contract due diligence, while I worked in another department.

When I jokingly asked whether he would accompany me as a pretend boyfriend, he surprised me by accepting immediately.

“I can manage one evening pretending to be charming, Megan, although I can’t promise I’ll understand the seating arrangements.”

His easy confidence helped me face an occasion I had dreaded for weeks.

The wedding reception took place at an elegant lakeside venue outside Columbus, Ohio.

Derek approached us shortly after dinner, smiling with the familiar arrogance that once made me question my appearance, intelligence, and judgment.

“Well, Megan, I have to admit I’m surprised you managed to find somebody willing to accompany you tonight.”

Nathan introduced himself politely.

Derek examined his tailored suit.

“I hope she explained what you’re getting involved with, because living with Megan requires considerably more patience than most men possess.”

I felt my old instinct to defend myself rising.

Before I could respond, Nathan placed a rectangular gift box on the table.

“Actually, Derek, I brought something I thought you might recognize from your previous career.”

Derek opened the lid.

Inside lay a navy athletic jacket, an engraved portfolio, three document folders, and a framed photograph.

His smile disappeared.

I recognized the jacket immediately.

It had once hung behind Derek’s office door at Ridgeway Athletic Group, where he served as a regional director before leaving under circumstances he always described as a tremendous professional opportunity.

Derek pulled out the portfolio.

His initials were engraved in one corner.

“Where did you get these things, and why would you bring them here?”

Nathan remained composed.

“Three months ago, I was assigned to review historical internal audit materials involving Ridgeway, and your name appeared in the archived records.”

Derek froze.

Brianna stepped closer.

“Derek, what exactly is he talking about?”

For the first time that evening, my ex-husband looked genuinely frightened.

Part 2: The Career Story That Began Falling Apart

Derek closed the box with unnecessary force and declared that its contents had nothing to do with his wedding.

Nathan simply nodded.

“Then we can leave the materials aside and discuss the appropriate arrangements on Monday, because there’s no requirement to address them publicly.”

That response seemed to unsettle Derek more than an accusation would have.

Until that moment, he had treated Nathan as a decorative accessory I had brought to make him jealous.

Now he was confronting someone who understood a part of his professional history he desperately wanted forgotten.

Brianna lifted the framed photograph.

It showed Derek standing outside Ridgeway’s training facility beside several employees, including an older executive and Nathan.

“You knew each other before tonight?” she asked.

Nathan explained that their paths had crossed professionally but that they had never maintained a personal relationship.

Derek accused him of deliberately misrepresenting their connection.

“You don’t know anything about me, so stop acting as though you understand my career!”

Nathan answered evenly.

“I know what the available records establish, Derek, and I’m being careful not to claim anything beyond that.”

Several nearby guests had stopped pretending they weren’t listening.

I felt uncomfortable with the attention and increasingly concerned about Nathan’s decision to bring confidential-looking documents to such a public event.

He clarified that the materials in the box were archival items authorized for return, rather than unrestricted copies of an active confidential investigation.

When Brianna demanded an explanation, he described the review without identifying protected individuals or disclosing unsupported allegations.

Ridgeway had examined procurement contracts involving fitness equipment suppliers during Derek’s tenure.

Some vendors appeared connected to a business associated with one of Derek’s relatives.

Derek immediately volunteered the identity.

“My brother owned a legitimate supply company, and there’s nothing illegal about having relatives who operate businesses!”

Nathan did not dispute that.

“A family connection isn’t proof of misconduct, and I haven’t suggested otherwise.”

Brianna frowned.

“Then why was your employer investigating those contracts in the first place?”

Derek insisted that regional directors routinely approved hundreds of agreements.

Nathan acknowledged his point but explained that certain procurement patterns had triggered a broader examination of internal controls.

The review resulted in changes to purchasing procedures and the termination of several vendor relationships.

No finding Nathan could disclose established that Derek had personally committed fraud.

That distinction mattered enormously.

What troubled Brianna wasn’t a criminal conviction.

It was the growing distance between Derek’s confident version of his departure and the less flattering documentary history.

“You told me you left Ridgeway because another company offered you a much better position,” she said.

Derek straightened.

“That’s exactly what happened, Brianna, and I won’t allow somebody to rewrite my career at our wedding.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You resigned while the internal review was underway, although I haven’t claimed your resignation was involuntary.”

Brianna stared at her new husband.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me there was an investigation happening when you left?”

Derek grabbed a document from her hand.

“Because this is ancient history, and I’m not discussing it in front of everybody!”

She pulled away.

“Don’t ever snatch something out of my hands again, especially when I’m asking you a reasonable question.”

Watching her stand her ground, I recognized a moment I had lived through countless times.

Derek always wanted difficult conversations conducted privately, but only after he had finished humiliating somebody publicly.

Part 3: The Night I Stopped Defending Myself

Derek turned his frustration toward me.

He accused Nathan and me of orchestrating the incident to ruin his wedding.

I explained that I hadn’t known about the box or the review.

“I found out about these documents at the same moment everyone else did, Derek, and I had no intention of creating this situation.”

He laughed contemptuously.

“You expect me to believe you brought this man here without planning to embarrass me?”

Ordinarily, I would have continued defending myself until exhaustion made me cry.

During our marriage, every disagreement became a trial in which I was expected to prove my innocence.

This time, however, something changed.

“You don’t have to believe me, Derek, because I’m no longer responsible for convincing you that I’m telling the truth.”

He stared at me.

I continued before fear could silence me.

“I didn’t arrange this, and I don’t intend to spend another evening begging you to accept my explanation.”

Nathan offered to leave.

The simple question surprised me because it reminded me that I could decide what happened next.

I agreed.

Derek immediately stepped into our path.

“You can’t simply walk away as though you’ve won something, Megan, especially after bringing this spectacle to my wedding!”

I looked at him calmly.

“This isn’t a competition, Derek, and I don’t need to defeat you to be finished with this conversation.”

He accused me of bringing Nathan solely to provoke jealousy.

I admitted that part of me had wanted to show him I wasn’t lonely and miserable.

Nathan raised an eyebrow.

“I appreciate the unexpected honesty, although I was under the impression I was providing respectable company and conversation.”

His comment almost made me smile.

Derek’s expression darkened.
