Life Short Tales Moral Stories

My Husband Saw Me Arrive Seven Months Pregnant Beside The CEO Whose Signature Could Decide The Future Of Our Company. Seconds Earlier, He Had Been Kissing His Mistress By The Pool. He Accused Me Of Having An Affair. I Looked At Vanessa And Said, “That’s An Extraordinary Accusation Coming From You.”

Part 3 of 3

Later, Nathaniel confirmed that Northstar intended to preserve all submitted materials and cooperate with any properly authorized investigation.

He promised nothing regarding the final outcome.

Parker House Hospitality might survive independently.

It might find another buyer.

It might require major restructuring.

For once, uncertainty felt preferable to a convenient lie.

As I left the resort, I noticed Adrian watching from an upper balcony.

He held his phone without moving.

I wondered whether he was more afraid of losing his money, his reputation, or his control over me.

Soon, I would learn that the disputed acquisition was only part of something far more disturbing.

Part 6 — The Eighteen-Million-Dollar Policy

At seven-thirty that evening, my corporate controller, Teresa Morgan, called while I was packing for my flight home.

Teresa was forty-six and had worked for Parker House Hospitality for almost five years.

She rarely sounded emotional.

This time, her voice trembled.

“Evelyn, I found an insurance file that wasn’t included in any of the financial records previously given to me.”

The documents concerned key-person life insurance.

The proposed insured person was me.

The amount was eighteen million dollars.

I sat down on the bed.

“I never consented to an eighteen-million-dollar policy on my life, Teresa.”

The paperwork included what appeared to be an insured-consent form bearing my signature.

It also contained an amended stock-redemption agreement describing what would happen to my shares if I died.

The proposed beneficiary was a holding company controlled by Adrian.

A key-person policy and a corporate redemption agreement were not automatically proof of criminal intent.

But I had never authorized either arrangement.

And the timing was deeply alarming.

The signatures needed authentication.

The insurer also needed to determine whether a policy had actually been issued.

Rebecca advised us to preserve the evidence immediately and file a formal report regarding suspected falsification.

She urged me to remain somewhere secure and never meet Adrian alone.

Then a junior administrative employee named Linda Cooper called.

She had found a travel itinerary inside a restricted company folder.

It contained my return-flight information.

Personal details.

And a scheduled vehicle pickup.

Underneath the itinerary was a note referring to an insurance claim.

Linda sounded terrified.

“Please don’t use the car listed in that file, Mrs. Parker. I don’t know who arranged it, but something about those documents is very wrong.”

Before I could ask who had prepared the itinerary, I heard a man’s voice interrupt her.

The connection ended.

I immediately called Rebecca.

She returned to my room and contacted local law enforcement.

We canceled my original transportation arrangements but preserved all evidence.

Then an unknown number sent a photograph to my phone.

It showed me outside Hawthorne Estate, accepting Nathaniel’s hand beside his Mercedes.

Someone had photographed us from behind the landscaping.

A message appeared beneath it.

You should never have left Sonoma.

Another photograph arrived.

It showed the eighteen-million-dollar insurance paperwork.

Across the page was a handwritten note suggesting that an earlier plan had been exposed and the location would need to change.

My hands went cold.

Rebecca told me not to delete anything.

Then my phone rang.

I answered on speaker.

A calm male voice accused me of creating unnecessary complications.

“You should have signed the documents when you were asked, Mrs. Parker.”

I demanded his name.

He refused.

Then he said:

“Your husband may be foolish, but he is not the person you should fear most.”

The call ended.

Almost immediately, someone knocked three times on the door.

A male voice claimed to be hotel security.

Rebecca asked him to identify himself and said she would confirm through reception.

He did not respond.

Instead, the door handle slowly turned.

The lock held.

Footsteps moved away down the corridor.

When reception confirmed that no security employee had been sent to our room, Rebecca renewed the urgent request for police assistance.

I wrapped both arms protectively around my belly.

For the first time, my fear was no longer limited to losing a marriage or a company.

Part 7 — The Name on the Emergency Transfer

One final photograph arrived while we waited for the officers.

It showed a folder containing the disputed acquisition authorization.

The insurance documents.

And a medical admission form bearing my name.

The document underneath them was even more disturbing.

It appeared to authorize an emergency medical transfer scheduled for five-thirty the following morning.

The destination was not a hospital in Minneapolis.

It was a private medical facility in Northern California.

My pregnancy details were included.

My expected delivery date.

Other confidential medical information.

The authorization carried the name of the physician who had examined me on Friday.

Dr. Amelia Foster.

I stared at the signature.

“Rebecca, that’s my obstetrician. She saw me yesterday and told me our daughter was developing normally.”

Rebecca examined the photograph but did not make assumptions.

“We need to verify the document and contact her through an independently confirmed number.”

Before we could call, my phone displayed the number of Dr. Foster’s clinic.

I answered with trembling hands.

Her voice sounded breathless.

“Evelyn, someone has accessed my medical account without permission, and I need you to understand something immediately.”

I struggled to speak.

“Did you authorize an emergency transfer for me tomorrow morning?”

She answered instantly.

“Absolutely not. I never ordered any transfer, and I’m reporting the unauthorized access right now.”

Then she explained that whoever had entered her account had apparently accessed not only my medical records but also confidential prenatal information concerning my unborn daughter.

My mind raced.

Who had created the false authorizations?

Who knew my travel plans?

Who benefited if I disappeared?

And why was someone attempting to arrange a medical transfer that my own doctor knew nothing about?

Rebecca reached toward the telephone to update the police.

Then we heard something behind us.

A faint sliding sound.

The glass balcony door had begun to open.

I turned slowly.

One hand supported my pregnant belly.

The other gripped Rebecca’s arm.

Whatever was happening had moved far beyond the disputed acquisition.

Someone had gained access to our financial records.

My private medical information.

And the exact location where I was supposed to sleep.

As the balcony door continued opening behind us, I realized that whoever had constructed those documents might already be inside the room.

THE END
