“Please, Sir, Help Our Mommy!” The Four-Year-Old Boy Beg:ged As I Knelt Beside His Unconscious Mother. I Froze In Sh0ck. It Was Caroline, The Woman I Had Loved Five Years Ago. Then His Four-Year-Old Twin Sister Handed Me An Old Photograph Of Caroline And Me…

Part 2 of 3

“I would have wanted them.”

Caroline’s expression did not soften.

“You can say that now because they’re four years old and waiting in the next room.”

Jonathan had no answer.

He could not undo the day he packed his suitcase.

He could not recover the pregnancies, births, birthdays, and ordinary moments he had missed.

And for the first time in years, there was no business problem he could solve to make the past disappear.

PART 3 — THE LETTER THAT ARRIVED WITHOUT ITS FINAL PAGE

Caroline eventually agreed to an expedited DNA test.

The question of Jonathan’s biological relationship to Sophie and Caleb needed to be answered properly.

Rebecca began arranging the necessary procedures.

Before the social worker could leave, Caroline reached beneath her pillow and removed an old envelope.

She handed it to Jonathan.

The moment he saw the handwriting, he recognized it.

It was his own.

Five years earlier, after leaving Chicago, Jonathan had written Caroline a long letter.

In it, he apologized for the cowardice that had caused him to walk away.

He promised that he would return once his company stabilized.

He remembered writing every page.

But when Caroline unfolded the version she had received, something was wrong.

The final page was missing.

Instead, a typed statement had been placed at the end.

It claimed that Jonathan no longer wanted a family.

It stated that he would not accept personal complications while rebuilding his business.

Jonathan stared at the paper.

“I never wrote this.”

Caroline looked at him.

“I know that now.”

At that moment, another woman appeared in the doorway.

Patricia Hayes, Caroline’s aunt, had driven from Milwaukee after learning that Caroline was hospitalized.

She stopped when she saw Jonathan holding the altered letter.

Her expression changed immediately.

Jonathan stood.

“What happened to the original final page?”

Patricia hesitated.

Then she admitted she had suspected something was wrong.

But she had believed she was protecting Caroline.

After the separation, she had heard Caroline repeatedly calling Jonathan’s office.

On one occasion, a man told Caroline that Jonathan had instructed his staff not to forward personal matters.

The man was Daniel Cross.

Daniel had been Jonathan’s chief of staff.

For nearly a decade, he had controlled enormous parts of Jonathan’s professional life.

He managed Jonathan’s calendar.

He supervised correspondence.

He coordinated acquisitions and negotiations.

He controlled access to meetings and private communications.

During the financial collapse, Jonathan had given Daniel extraordinary discretion.

He had trusted him to manage the chaos.

Now that decision looked disastrous.

Caroline explained that after Sophie and Caleb were born, she had mailed three letters to Jonathan’s office.

She included photographs.

She wrote plainly that the twins were his children.

But Jonathan never received the letters.

Patricia had kept detailed notes documenting telephone calls, dates, and the responses Caroline received.

One entry described a call when Caroline placed Daniel on speakerphone.

Daniel had told her:

“Jonathan is rebuilding his life and doesn’t wish to discuss personal complications.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

He recognized that language immediately.

Daniel had used similar words with him.

“You can’t allow emotional complications to destroy what’s left of the company.”

At the time, Jonathan believed Daniel was protecting him from further stress.

Now he began understanding what had really happened.

Daniel had controlled the information moving in both directions.

He had prevented Caroline from reaching Jonathan.

And he had kept Jonathan from learning that Caroline was still trying to contact him.

Caroline turned toward the hospital window.

“I spent five years believing you knew about the twins and had deliberately chosen never to contact them.”

Jonathan answered quietly.

“And I spent five years believing you’d closed every door between us.”

Neither explanation erased their responsibility.

Jonathan had still abandoned Caroline during a crisis.

Caroline had eventually stopped trying to reach him.

Patricia had withheld information because she believed certainty would be easier for Caroline to bear than continued uncertainty.

And Daniel had exploited every silence between them.

PART 4 — THE TOWNHOUSE THAT HAD NEVER TRULY BEEN LOST

That evening, Jonathan called Allison Grant, his chief legal counsel.

He requested a confidential investigation.

Allison was instructed to review archived communications, courier records, property transfers, assistant logs, and every relevant document connected to Daniel Cross.

Jonathan expected the investigation to produce difficult questions.

Instead, it began uncovering a pattern.

During the collapse of Jonathan’s business, the Lincoln Park townhouse where he and Caroline had once lived was supposedly sold to an anonymous investment group.

But that was not what had actually happened.

Patricia had purchased the distressed mortgage through the Hayes Family Trust.

She had been afraid Caroline and her unborn children would lose any possibility of returning to the home where Caroline once felt secure.

Daniel had handled the transaction for Jonathan’s company.

But in the company’s internal records, he documented the property as liquidated.

Patricia had paid the lender directly.

She also preserved the remaining funds for Caroline and the children.

When Caroline learned the truth, she turned toward her aunt.

“Why didn’t you tell me the house was still there?”

Patricia lowered her eyes.

“Because I was afraid knowing it survived would make you spend the rest of your life waiting for Jonathan.”

Caroline looked at her.

“I waited anyway.”

Patricia’s expression crumpled.

“I know.”

But the property records were only the beginning.

Allison uncovered something much more serious.

During the restructuring of Jonathan’s business, Daniel had established consulting accounts that had not been properly disclosed.

Company funds moved through those accounts.

One of them had paid a private courier service during the exact period when Jonathan and Caroline’s correspondence began disappearing.

A courier invoice documented a delivery to the Lincoln Park townhouse six days after Jonathan left.

The listed recipient was Caroline Hayes.

But the signature acknowledging receipt belonged to Daniel Cross.

Caroline never received the package.

The courier records showed that the envelope was returned to Daniel’s private office.

Investigators believed it almost certainly contained Jonathan’s complete letter.

The evidence suggested Daniel had intercepted the original correspondence, removed the final page, and substituted the typed statement designed to convince Caroline that Jonathan wanted nothing to do with a future family.

Then Patricia admitted another disturbing detail.

After learning Caroline was pregnant, Daniel had visited her.

He warned that Jonathan could not afford a paternity scandal while his company was collapsing and his late father’s estate remained unsettled.

Later, after Sophie and Caleb were born, Daniel offered Patricia a private payment.

In exchange, he wanted her to sign a statement confirming that Caroline and the children would make no claims against Jonathan.

Patricia refused.

She looked at Jonathan.

“That was when I started realizing he wasn’t protecting you. He was protecting himself.”

The consulting accounts supported that suspicion.

Daniel had gained enormous power while Jonathan was financially desperate and emotionally isolated.

His influence depended on Jonathan continuing to trust him completely.

The less contact Jonathan had with his family, the easier it became for Daniel to control information and financial decisions.

A reconciliation with Caroline would threaten that arrangement.

Jonathan’s first instinct was to confront Daniel immediately.

Caroline stopped him.

“You promised you wouldn’t turn my life into another corporate project.”

Jonathan sat back.

Five years earlier, he would have responded to a crisis by sending attorneys, investigators, and executives in every direction.

He would have used money and authority to force a resolution.

But this time, he stopped.

Then he asked:

“What do you want me to do?”

Caroline studied him carefully.

“Find the truth legally. Preserve every relevant document. And ask me before anyone contacts people from my life.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Then that’s what we’ll do.”

For the first time, he was learning that helping Caroline did not mean taking control away from her.

PART 5 — THE DNA TEST THAT CONFIRMED EVERYTHING

The following afternoon, Allison arrived at Lakeshore Medical Center carrying the DNA test results.

Jonathan stood beside Caroline’s hospital bed.

Across the room, Sophie and Caleb were sitting at a small table, concentrating on their coloring books.

For several minutes, the room felt unusually peaceful.

Then Allison opened the folder.

“Would you like me to read the results aloud?”

Caroline nodded.

Allison unfolded the report.

“The probability that Jonathan Prescott is the biological father of both children is greater than 99.99 percent.”

Jonathan remained completely still.

He had already suspected the truth.

He had seen his own features in the children’s faces.

He had recognized the timing of Caroline’s pregnancy.

And he had heard the children call him Dad.

But now there was no uncertainty left.

Sophie looked up from her drawing.

“Does that mean he really is our daddy?”

Caroline’s eyes filled with tears.

She looked at her daughter.

“Yes, sweetheart. It does.”

Caleb stopped coloring.

He stared at Jonathan with cautious hope.

Then he asked the question Jonathan would never forget.

“So you’re staying?”

Jonathan slowly crouched in front of him.

Five years earlier, he might have responded with a dramatic promise.

He might have offered expensive gifts, a mansion, or an extravagant future.

Back then, he had believed that solving a problem required making the largest possible gesture.

But the frightened little boy standing in front of him did not need a billionaire’s promises.

He needed something much simpler.

Jonathan spoke carefully.

“Yes, Caleb. I’m staying. But being your father doesn’t mean I get to change your whole life overnight.”

The boy watched him closely.

Jonathan continued.

“Your mom still makes decisions about your life. Aunt Patricia is still your family. And I have to earn your trust by showing up and keeping my promises.”

Sophie considered his answer.

Then she asked:

“Can you come to our house?”

Jonathan looked toward Caroline.

He did not answer on her behalf.

She noticed.

After a moment, she nodded.

“We can start with visits.”

And that was how Jonathan began becoming a father.

Not by purchasing a bigger house.

Not by arranging private schools.

Not by establishing trust funds or buying expensive toys.

He began with ordinary responsibilities.

Wednesday dinners.

Saturday mornings at the park.

Picking up the twins from preschool after Caroline approved the arrangement.
