“My Girlfriend Is Four Months Pregnant, And I Expect You To Raise Her Baby!” My Husband Announced On Our Wedding Night, While I Was Still Wearing My White Wedding Dress. I Thought That Was The Worst Betrayal Imaginable. Then He Admitted His Mother Had Known About The Affair Before Our Wedding And Had Been Plotting To Get Her Hands On My Mother’s $250,000 Savings…

Part 2 of 3

“That’s why your mother pushed us to move the wedding forward,” I said.

Nathan stared at the floor.

“We planned to borrow the money temporarily. Once the business recovered, we intended to repay everything.”

“Then why didn’t you ask honestly before we married?”

He couldn’t answer.

On the sixth day after our wedding, Nathan approached me carrying a promissory note prepared by an attorney he knew.

The document claimed that I would provide a $220,000 loan to the workshop when I received money from my mother.

Repayment terms would supposedly be negotiated later.

“Just sign this so Vincent will give us another thirty days,” Nathan pleaded. “We can sort out the details afterward.”

I examined the document.

As a CPA, I knew exactly how dangerous an unsecured obligation with undefined repayment provisions could become.

More importantly, the money wasn’t mine to promise.

“I won’t commit my mother’s retirement savings to a debt you concealed from me before our marriage.”

I returned the document unsigned.

Nathan’s face reddened.

“You’re being selfish! You’d rather watch my family’s business collapse than make a temporary sacrifice!”

“Your family created this obligation without my knowledge. My mother isn’t responsible for rescuing you.”

He struck the desk with his palm.

At that moment, Robert appeared in the doorway.

He had just returned from a cardiac follow-up appointment and still carried a small bag of medication.

“What debt are you discussing?” he asked.

Nathan fell silent.

Robert stepped inside.

“I built this business over forty years, Nathan. Tell me what financial obligation exists without my knowledge.”

Diane hurried toward us.

In her panic, she revealed more than she intended.

“If we hadn’t moved the wedding forward, Helen’s deposit wouldn’t have matured in time to pay Vincent!”

Nobody spoke.

Robert looked from his wife to his son.

Then he turned toward me.

“Caroline, please bring every document you have. We’re going to discuss this together, and nobody is leaving until I understand what happened.”

For the first time since the wedding, someone in that house seemed interested in the truth.

PART 5 — THE FATHER WHO REFUSED TO PROTECT THEIR LIES

Robert sat in his leather armchair while Nathan explained the private loan.

His face tightened as he learned about the speculative investments and unauthorized financing arrangements.

Then I showed him Vanessa’s messages.

He read them slowly.

“Nathan, another woman is carrying your child, and you knew this before marrying Caroline?”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes, Dad, but I thought we could arrange something that would work for everyone.”

Robert stared at him.

“You stood in church and promised fidelity while planning to make your wife responsible for an affair you’d hidden from her.”

Nathan tried to explain that the child deserved a stable family.

Robert interrupted.

“The child deserves honesty and responsible parents, not a fabricated agreement imposed on an unsuspecting woman.”

He turned toward Diane.

“You knew about the affair and the debt before the wedding?”

She began crying.

“I was trying to save our business, Robert. Everything you spent forty years building was at risk.”

His expression hardened.

“Then you should have told me the truth instead of using Caroline’s marriage to gain access to her mother’s retirement funds.”

Diane argued that families were supposed to help one another during financial emergencies.

Robert shook his head.

“Family support has to be freely given. What you’ve done is deception disguised as loyalty.”

He ordered an independent review of the workshop’s finances.

Nathan’s management authority would be suspended while the ownership records, loan agreements, and outstanding obligations were examined.

Diane would also be removed from financial-control duties pending that review.

Then Robert faced me.

“Caroline, I owe you an apology. I didn’t know what they were doing, and I should have paid closer attention to the business after my surgery.”

I could see how deeply the revelations affected him.

“You aren’t responsible for their lies, Robert. I appreciate that you’re willing to confront them.”

That evening, I packed my clothes and personal documents.

Nathan followed me upstairs.

He knelt beside my suitcase and began begging for another chance.

“I love you, Caroline. I know I’ve made terrible mistakes, but we can rebuild everything if you don’t leave.”

I looked at the man I had trusted for three years.

“You didn’t merely make a mistake. You planned a wedding while hiding an affair, then tried to turn my mother’s savings into your emergency financing.”

He reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

“I won’t spend the rest of my life wondering which part of our marriage was genuine.”

Then I closed the suitcase.

The following morning would be the seventh day after our wedding.

And my mother’s deposit was about to mature.

PART 6 — THE DAY THEIR TWO-HUNDRED-FIFTY-THOUSAND-DOLLAR PLAN COLLAPSED

At eight the following morning, Diane was already pacing through the living room.

Nathan sat silently on the sofa, repeatedly checking his telephone.

Vincent’s loan was approaching maturity, and the workshop had insufficient available cash to repay it.

Just before noon, Nathan received a call demanding either evidence of payment or an acceptable refinancing arrangement.

He ended the conversation looking terrified.

Diane turned toward me.

“Caroline, please call your mother. Today is the maturity date, and we need to know when the funds will be available.”

I didn’t move.

Nathan dialed Helen himself and activated the speaker.

“Good morning, Helen. I was wondering whether the bank completed the deposit transfer you discussed with Caroline.”

My mother’s response was calm.

“Nathan, I’d prefer that everyone hear my answer clearly, so please make certain Diane is listening.”

He confirmed that she was.

“The $250,000 belongs to me, and I’ve instructed the bank to renew the certificate for another five-year term.”

Diane stopped pacing.

“Helen, you can’t possibly understand what you’re doing to this family!”

My mother continued.

“I understand perfectly. Your son created debts before marrying my daughter, and those debts are not my responsibility.”

Diane began insisting that marriage required financial sacrifice.

“Caroline is our daughter-in-law now, and decent families help one another instead of abandoning people during a crisis!”

My mother answered firmly.

“You don’t get to invoke family loyalty after deceiving my daughter and planning to use my retirement money without an honest agreement.”

Nathan looked at me.

“You told her not to transfer the money?”

“I called her on our wedding night, immediately after you admitted your affair.”

His expression twisted.

“So you’ve been planning to ruin me since the night we married?”

I shook my head.

“I protected my mother’s savings. Your decisions created the crisis you’re facing.”

Robert sat quietly nearby.

“Caroline did exactly what she should have done,” he said.

Diane covered her face.

“We only needed $220,000! Helen would still have thirty thousand left!”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You were prepared to take nearly everything my mother saved over her entire working life.”

Then Nathan’s phone rang again.

Vanessa’s name appeared.

Diane grabbed the device and answered angrily.

“Why are you calling repeatedly when we’re trying to deal with an emergency?”

Vanessa sounded close to tears.

“Nathan promised to send the twenty-thousand-dollar apartment deposit today. The landlord won’t hold the place much longer!”

Robert slowly rose from his chair.

“What apartment deposit?”

Vanessa continued speaking.

“Diane told me that once Caroline received her mother’s $250,000, there would be enough to pay the workshop’s debt and provide housing for me and the baby.”

The room became silent.
