Even After Everything, I Rushed To Check On Her Because I’m An Emergency Nurse. But When My Fiancé Pushed Past Me And Dropped To His Knees Beside Her, I Finally Understood Who He Truly Loved…

Part 2 of 3

At the time, I dismissed her words as old-fashioned ideas about marriage.

Now I wondered how much she knew.

The final confirmation came when Patricia accidentally sent me a message intended for Brandon.

She deleted it almost immediately.

But I captured the notification before it disappeared.

Paige says Natalie will sign the property documents during the honeymoon. Don’t get impatient and ruin the plan.

I stared at the message.

Brandon, Paige, and Patricia had apparently discussed the same objective.

My wedding was not simply a celebration of a relationship damaged by infidelity.

It was also meant to create the circumstances in which they could pressure me into surrendering part of my grandmother’s property.

That night, I stopped crying.

I organized the photographs, legal correspondence, and Patricia’s message.

I gave copies to Rachel and explained exactly when I wanted her to bring them forward.

I also spoke privately with my father so he would not be completely unprepared.

Then I continued attending wedding appointments.

Brandon interpreted my composure as ignorance.

Paige continued smiling as though everything was proceeding according to plan.

Neither understood that I had already decided the ceremony would only continue as far as the truth allowed.

PART 4 — THE WEDDING THAT ENDED BEFORE WE EXCHANGED VOWS

Back inside the church, Rachel handed me the brown envelope.

Brandon watched with a pale expression.

I removed several photographs.

Then I turned toward him.

“Last month, you told me you were supervising construction outside Charleston. But this photograph shows you kissing Paige outside my house while I was working at the hospital.”

Brandon glanced nervously toward the congregation.

“Natalie, please don’t do this here. We can discuss whatever you think happened in private.”

I turned toward Paige.

“How long did you think you could help organize my wedding while secretly sleeping with the man I was supposed to marry?”

Her hands began trembling.

The bouquet slipped from her fingers.

White peonies scattered across the wooden floor.

“I’m sorry, Natalie. Things became complicated. We never wanted you to discover it this way.”

I looked at the woman I had called my best friend for most of my life.

“You had months to stop. Instead, you helped Brandon investigate how to obtain ownership of my house.”

The congregation erupted into anxious whispers.

Patricia suddenly stood.

“This is completely inappropriate! You’re ruining a family celebration after everything we’ve spent preparing for today!”

I unfolded the captured message.

“Then perhaps you can explain why you told Brandon that Paige would convince me to sign over part of my grandmother’s house during our honeymoon.”

Patricia’s cheeks reddened.

She struggled to respond.

Finally, she accused me of misunderstanding normal financial planning between future spouses.

I held up the correspondence from the real-estate attorney.

“Brandon contacted a lawyer about transferring my separately inherited property, yet he never discussed those plans honestly with me.”

Brandon stepped closer and reached toward my wrist.

My father immediately moved between us.

“Step back, Brandon. My daughter has made it clear that she doesn’t want you touching her.”

The church filled with concerned voices.

Several guests stood.

Paige began sobbing.

Then she suddenly collapsed onto a nearby pew.

Despite everything she had done, my nursing instincts took over.

I approached and checked her responsiveness, breathing, and pulse.

Another guest called for assistance.

A physician attending the wedding came forward and took over her care.

Once I knew Paige was receiving appropriate attention, I stepped aside.

Brandon pushed through the guests.

He dropped to his knees beside her and took her hand.

“Paige, can you hear me? Are you all right?”

The concern in his voice was unmistakable.

Only minutes earlier, he had promised me lifelong loyalty.

Now he behaved as though our wedding had become irrelevant.

His attention belonged entirely to her.

I stood watching them.

And something inside me finally settled.

I removed my engagement ring.

When Brandon looked up, I placed it on the floor in front of him.

“Keep the ring, Brandon. It no longer represents anything I want.”

Then I turned toward the minister.

“I’m sorry this ceremony cannot become the marriage everyone came to celebrate. But I cannot promise my future to someone who deliberately betrayed my trust.”

I took my father’s arm.

Together, we walked toward the church doors.

My mother waited near the aisle.

She embraced me without asking for an explanation.

Behind us, someone began applauding.

Other guests joined.

Their encouragement followed us toward the exit.

I did not feel victorious.

I felt devastated, humiliated, and frightened about beginning again.

But I knew I had protected something more important than a beautiful wedding.

I had protected my freedom to decide what happened to my life.

PART 5 — LEAVING CHARLESTON AND LEARNING TO TRUST AGAIN

The following morning, I met with my attorney.

We began separating my personal and financial affairs from Brandon’s.

Because he had been living in my house, my attorney arranged appropriate written notice concerning his occupancy and belongings.

His possessions were collected according to the applicable legal requirements, without unnecessary confrontation.

I also arranged for electronic access codes and security permissions to be changed when legally appropriate.

Brandon called repeatedly.

He sent messages claiming Paige meant nothing to him.

He insisted that our relationship could survive one terrible mistake.

Eventually, I replied once.

“If Paige meant nothing to you, then you destroyed our relationship and my trust for someone you didn’t even respect enough to acknowledge honestly.”

After that, I stopped responding.

I also ended contact with Paige and Patricia.

But protecting myself did not immediately remove the pain.

For months, ordinary things reminded me of the betrayal.

A familiar perfume could bring back memories of Paige.

A restaurant where Brandon once took me could make my hands tremble.

I sometimes questioned whether I had missed obvious warning signs because I wanted so badly to believe in our future.

Eventually, I requested a transfer to a major hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The move allowed me to continue working as an emergency department nurse while creating distance from the people and places connected to my canceled wedding.

I rented an apartment and began establishing new routines.

I also started working with a therapist experienced in betrayal-related emotional trauma.

Over eighteen months, therapy helped me understand how my trust had been manipulated.

I learned to establish healthier boundaries.

Gradually, I stopped interpreting Brandon’s dishonesty as evidence that something was wrong with me.

My grandmother’s house remained mine.

I continued managing its maintenance through professional services under the family trust arrangements.

But I stopped viewing it merely as property Brandon had nearly taken.

It represented the independence and security my grandmother had wanted me to possess.

During my second year in Raleigh, I met Daniel Mercer.

Daniel was an internal medicine physician.

He was patient, thoughtful, and considerably quieter than Brandon.

His jokes were often terrible.

He laughed at them anyway.

At first, I resisted becoming emotionally involved.

I was afraid of trusting another person.

But Daniel never pressured me to explain feelings before I was ready.
