After hours of calls and secret orders, a team arrived to open the grave. A small crowd gathered — locals, gravediggers, police.
Ray stopped crying, fists clenched, eyes fixed. Steven’s heart pounded as the coffin lid was lifted. Inside: no body. Just a white sheet, a withered yellow rose, and a folded note.
“If you’re here, the truth matters. She’s alive. To find her, you must abandon everything you believe. Follow me. — V.”
Steven closed his eyes. The face of his missing friend came back to him. The words spoken years ago: “If I die, don’t believe anything. Keep searching to the end.”
He leaned down, took Ray’s hand and whispered:
“We’ll find her, child. I swear.”
