Moral Stories Bikers

A 6-Year-Old Girl in a Princess Dress Refused to Leave an Injured Biker’s Side. When Police Tried to Lead Her Away, She Whispered, “His Brothers Are Coming.” Minutes Later, 20 Motorcycles Appeared—and Every Rider Fell Silent When She Called Them by Name and Said, “Claire Says You Need to Stop Blaming Yourself.” There Was Just One Problem: Claire Had Been Gone for Nearly Four Years…

Part 2 of 3

A state trooper assumed the child had overheard something.

Kendra knew she hadn’t.

Adeline had been beside her from the moment they stopped.

There had been no conversation about Hawk’s friends.

Minutes passed.

Then the sound began.

At first, it was faint.

A distant vibration rolling through the afternoon air.

Then it became unmistakable.

Motorcycles.

Many of them.

Adeline smiled.

“See? They’re here.”

Kendra slowly turned toward the highway.

Nearly twenty motorcycles were approaching in formation.

The Riders Who Came Looking for Hawk

The first motorcycle pulled onto the shoulder.

Its rider removed his helmet before the engine had completely stopped.

He was a broad-shouldered man in his early sixties named August Bellamy, known among his club as Griffin.

Behind him came Bishop.

Then Red.

Exactly the three names Adeline had spoken.

Kendra felt the air leave her lungs.

Griffin hurried toward the slope.

“Where is he?”

A trooper pointed downward.

Griffin rushed toward Hawk but suddenly stopped when he noticed the child in the lavender princess dress.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

His expression changed from urgency to complete disbelief.

Adeline looked up at him.

“You’re Griffin.”

The older biker’s face went pale.

“Who told you that?”

Adeline pointed toward the empty patch of grass beside Hawk.

“Claire.”

Every biker within hearing distance became silent.

Griffin slowly lowered himself onto one knee.

“What did you say?”

“Claire told me your name.”

Bishop removed his sunglasses.

Red stared at the little girl as though the ground had shifted beneath him.

Kendra finally asked the question nobody seemed willing to say aloud.

“Who is Claire?”

Griffin looked at Hawk.

Then back at Adeline.

His voice became quiet.

“Claire was Hawk’s daughter.”

He swallowed hard.

“We lost her almost four years ago.”

The Photograph That Changed Everything

Kendra immediately pulled Adeline closer.

She wanted a reasonable explanation.

Children heard things.

Children imagined things.

Coincidences happened.

Surely that was all this was.

Then Griffin pulled out his phone.

He searched through several photographs before finding an old one.

He held the screen toward Kendra.

A little girl smiled from the photograph.

She looked around seven years old.

She wore a yellow cardigan and stood beside Hawk at what appeared to be a summer picnic.

In her hands was a bouquet of small yellow flowers.

Kendra’s stomach tightened.

Adeline had mentioned the girl who liked yellow flowers before anyone had spoken Claire’s name.

Griffin showed another photograph.

Claire was sitting on Hawk’s shoulders while several bikers stood around them.

Among them were younger versions of Griffin, Bishop and Red.

“She grew up around all of us,” Griffin explained. “Hawk raised her by himself. That little girl was his whole world.”

Adeline quietly touched the screen.

“She says you gave her a stuffed bear at the hospital, but one ear was crooked.”

Griffin dropped the phone.

Bishop caught it before it hit the ground.

Griffin covered his mouth.

His eyes filled.

“Nobody knew about that except us.”

A Message Hawk Had Been Waiting Years to Hear

The responders prepared to transport Hawk.

This time Adeline allowed them to lift him.

Before they did, she leaned close to him.

“Claire says you have to stop blaming yourself.”

Hawk’s eyes opened slightly.

The little girl continued.

“She says the rainy night wasn’t your fault.”

A tear slipped from the corner of Hawk’s eye.

Griffin turned away.

Kendra didn’t understand the meaning behind those words, but the bikers clearly did.

Years earlier, Hawk had promised to meet Claire after work on the evening she became seriously ill.

He had arrived late because weather had slowed traffic.

Although nothing he could have done would have changed what happened afterward, Hawk had carried the guilt ever since.

He believed that somehow he had failed his daughter when she needed him most.

Almost nobody knew how deeply that thought haunted him.

Adeline reached for his hand.

“She says she never waited alone.”

Hawk’s fingers closed weakly around hers.

“She says she knew you were coming.”

For the first time since the bikers had arrived, Hawk managed to speak clearly enough for everyone nearby to hear him.

“Tell her I love her.”

Adeline smiled softly.

“She already knows.”

The Princess Dress in the Hospital Hallway

Hawk spent the next several days recovering at a Lexington hospital.

Doctors told Griffin that the timing of the emergency response had been remarkably fortunate.

Had Kendra continued driving, it might have been much longer before anyone spotted the motorcycle below the highway.

No one could explain how Adeline had seen Hawk from the moving car when even her mother had seen nothing.

The motorcycle had been almost completely hidden.

No one could explain the names either.

Griffin.

Bishop.

Red.

Claire.

Or the yellow flowers.
