Part 1 of 3

The Woman Beside the Road

Walter Pembroke had spent most of his sixty-three years believing money could solve almost anything.

It had bought him a beautiful estate outside Stowe, Vermont, overlooking acres of pine trees and rolling hills. It had paid for private doctors when his health began to decline. It had given him cars, investments, vacations, and more rooms than one man could possibly use.

But money had never made the house feel less empty.

One cold November evening, Walter was returning from a medical appointment when he noticed a woman standing beside an old sedan on a quiet country road.

Rain had turned into sleet.

The woman was holding a little boy close to her coat while trying to make a phone call.

Walter asked his driver to stop.

The woman immediately looked nervous when he approached.

“Are you all right?”

“The car stopped,” she replied. “Someone is supposed to come, but I don’t know how long it’ll take.”

The boy looked about five.

His lips were trembling from the cold.

Walter glanced toward the dark road behind them.

“You shouldn’t wait out here with a child.”

The woman hesitated.

“We’ll be okay.”

Walter removed his scarf and handed it to the boy.

“Maybe. But you don’t need to prove it tonight.”

Her name was Mallory Keene.

Her son was Toby.

Walter offered to have the car taken to a nearby repair shop and told Mallory they could stay at his house until morning.

She resisted at first.

Then Toby sneezed.

That decided it.

Just One Night

When Mallory saw Walter’s home, she stopped walking.

It wasn’t simply large.

It looked like something from another world.

Stone walls, tall windows, a sweeping driveway, and warm lights glowing behind every pane.

“Sir, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”

Walter looked at her.

“About what?”

“We can’t stay here.”

“Why not?”

Mallory glanced down at her wet shoes.

“Because people like us don’t belong in places like this.”

Walter was silent for a moment.

Then he opened the door.

“It’s my house. I decide who belongs here.”

The housekeeper prepared a guest room.

Toby received warm pajamas that had once belonged to Walter’s grandnephew.

Mallory thanked Walter repeatedly.

Before going upstairs, she stopped beside him.

“We’ll leave tomorrow morning. I promise. You’ll never have to worry about us bothering you again.”

Walter smiled faintly.

“It’s one night, Mallory. You don’t owe me your disappearance.”

He thought that would be the end of it.

He had no idea how much that single night would change.

The Breakfast Walter Had Forgotten

Walter woke to a sound he hadn’t heard in his house for years.

Laughter.

He followed it downstairs.

Toby was sitting at the kitchen island while Mallory made pancakes with Walter’s housekeeper.

There was flour on the boy’s nose.

“Mr. Pembroke!” Toby shouted. “I made one shaped like a dinosaur!”

It looked nothing like a dinosaur.

Walter laughed anyway.

For the first time in months, he ate an entire breakfast.

Mallory noticed.

So did Walter’s housekeeper.

Later that morning, the repair shop called.

Mallory’s car needed several parts and would not be ready until the following day.

Her expression immediately changed.

“We’ll find a motel.”

Walter shook his head.

“You already have a room.”

“You’ve done enough.”

“Then stop keeping score.”

Mallory looked at him for several seconds.

“Why are you helping us?”

Walter could have said because he had money.

Instead, he told the truth.

“Because this house hasn’t sounded alive in a very long time.”

The Family Arrives

The peaceful atmosphere ended that afternoon.

Walter’s nephew, Grant Pembroke, arrived without calling.

Grant was forty-one, polished, ambitious, and always dressed as though someone important might be watching.

The moment he saw Mallory, his expression tightened.

“Who is she?”

Walter disliked the question immediately.

“Her name is Mallory.”

Grant lowered his voice.

“Uncle Walter, can I speak to you privately?”

In Walter’s study, Grant closed the door.

“You can’t invite strangers into this house.”

“Apparently I can. I own it.”

Grant ignored the joke.

“You don’t know anything about her.”

“I know her car stopped in freezing weather and she had a five-year-old with her.”

“And somehow she ended up inside a multimillion-dollar estate belonging to a man everyone knows isn’t well?”

Walter’s expression hardened.

“Careful.”

Grant stepped back.
