I Looked at It and Froze: The Man in the Picture Was My Father, Whom I Had Buried 14 Years Ago… and the Date on the Back Was Yesterday. I Thought That Was Impossible—Until We Landed and I Saw Who Was Waiting at Gate 22

Part 2 of 3

Arthur looked up.

Lydia saw something in his expression.

Recognition.

Her stomach tightened.

“He knew, didn’t he?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Yes.”

The answer cut deeper than she expected.

“He knew Mark was gone?”

“Yes.”

“And he still didn’t come?”

Arthur’s voice softened.

“He tried.”

Lydia turned sharply toward him.

“What does that mean?”

“He reached Portland. But he believed someone had followed him.”

Lydia shook her head.

“You expect me to believe my father spent fourteen years hiding because somebody might have been watching?”

Arthur looked toward the rear of the cabin.

“That woman who took my wallet is one reason I do.”

What Graham Found

Her name, the crew later learned, was Celia Vane.

Arthur knew the surname.

Years earlier, Celia’s family had controlled a private contracting company called Vane Meridian Group.

Graham had been hired to examine its financial records.

Lydia remembered her father as an accountant who complained about tax forms and kept pencils behind his ear.

Arthur described someone else entirely.

Graham had discovered unusual transfers through foundations, consulting companies and private security accounts.

He had started asking questions.

Soon afterward, his vehicle was forced off an icy road.

He survived.

But only a few people knew.

“Your mother knew?” Lydia asked.

Arthur nodded.

That hurt almost as much.

Elaine Carver had taken Lydia to the memorial.

Elaine had packed away Graham’s clothes.

Elaine had held her daughter through nights of grief.

All while knowing he was alive.

“Why would she do that?”

“Because Graham asked her to.”

Lydia stared at him.

“Everyone keeps making decisions for me and calling it protection.”

Arthur did not defend himself.

“You’re right.”

His simple agreement stopped her.

He reached inside his jacket and removed a small brass key.

A paper tag hung from it.

“Your father wanted you to have this.”

Lydia did not touch it.

“What does it open?”

“A safe-deposit box in Portland.”

“What is inside?”

“Records your father believed could finally explain what happened.”

Lydia stared at the key.

Then Hazel pointed toward the leather wallet.

“There’s an envelope inside.”

The Letter With Two Messages

Arthur pulled out a sealed envelope.

LYDIA CARVER was written across the front.

She recognized the handwriting instantly.

Her father’s.

Lydia opened it carefully.

The message was short.

Lydia,

If Arthur has reached you, then I have already broken the promise that kept me away.

Your mother never wanted to deceive you.

I asked her to protect you from the truth because I believed silence was safer.

I know now that I was wrong.

—Dad

Lydia read it twice.

Then Hazel noticed faint writing through the back of the page.

“There’s something else.”

Lydia turned it over.

A second note appeared in different handwriting.

Her mother’s.

Lydia,

If you receive this before speaking to me, come directly home.

Do not let anyone convince you your father disappeared simply because he was frightened.

There is more to the story.

—Mom

Arthur went pale.

“I have never seen that message.”

Lydia looked at him suspiciously.

“You carried this envelope.”

“Your father gave it to me sealed.”

Arthur examined the edge.

Someone had opened it and carefully resealed it.

Celia had possessed his wallet long enough to remove the photograph.

She could also have opened the envelope.

But that did not explain Lydia’s mother’s handwriting.

For the first time, Lydia understood that there might be more than two sides to the truth.

The Woman Behind the Evidence

When the plane landed in Portland, police officers boarded before passengers were allowed to leave.

Celia was escorted from the aircraft.

As she passed Lydia, she stopped.

“You think your father was the one who uncovered Vane Meridian?”

Arthur stood.

“Keep walking.”

Celia ignored him.

“Ask your mother who actually found the accounts.”

Then she was escorted away.

Lydia turned to Arthur.

“Was it my mother?”

His silence answered.

Elaine Carver had not always been the quiet school librarian Lydia remembered.

Before Lydia was born, she had worked as a forensic accountant.

She had discovered the first suspicious transfers.

Graham had stepped forward publicly so attention would fall on him instead of Elaine.

The crash had not silenced an investigator.

It had frightened a husband into making himself disappear so the people watching their family would believe the wrong parent held the evidence.

Lydia looked at the brass key.

Suddenly, her father’s disappearance seemed both more understandable and more painful.

He had sacrificed years.

But he had also taken those years from her.

Both could be true.

Gate 22

Lydia’s phone connected as soon as they entered the terminal.

Twenty-three missed calls appeared.

Most were from her mother.

One message stood out.

I’m at Gate 22. Please come to me before you go anywhere with Arthur.

Lydia looked at Hazel.

“Grandma’s here.”

Hazel nodded.

“Then we ask her.”

At Gate 22, Elaine stood beneath the arrivals board wearing a navy cardigan and holding her purse with both hands.

When she saw Lydia, tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Sweetheart.”

Lydia did not hug her.

“Is Dad alive?”

Elaine stopped.

Her expression broke.

“Yes.”
