Part 2 of 3

No Brielle.

Nora was carrying groceries inside when she noticed him beside the walkway.

Her expression hardened.

“What are you doing here?”

“I need to ask you about the twins.”

She gave a tired laugh.

“Now you need to ask?”

Caleb accepted the words without defending himself.

“Are they mine?”

Nora looked at him for several seconds.

Then she opened the front door.

“Come inside. Don’t wake them.”

The duplex was small but clean. Secondhand furniture filled the living room. Children’s books sat in neat stacks beside a worn sofa.

Rowan and Elsie were sleeping in matching portable cribs.

Caleb stared at them.

“You were pregnant when I made you leave.”

Nora’s voice remained calm.

“Seven weeks.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

That was when Nora finally became angry.

“I tried.”

She walked to a desk and removed an old folder.

Inside were copies of certified letters.

Seven of them.

All addressed to Caleb.

Most had been returned.

One carried a signature showing that it had been received at the Ashford family residence.

Caleb recognized the handwriting.

His mother’s.

Nora handed him her phone.

There were screenshots of messages sent from unfamiliar numbers.

One read:

Caleb does not wish to be involved. Contact his attorneys from now on.

Another said:

The Ashford family will challenge any claim of paternity.

Caleb swallowed.

“I never sent these.”

“I know that now.”

“Why didn’t you come to my office?”

Nora’s expression changed.

“I did.”

He stared at her.

“Twice.”

She told him security had refused to let her inside.

On her second visit, Brielle had come downstairs personally.

Brielle told Nora Caleb was engaged emotionally elsewhere and wanted a clean break.

Then she had offered Nora money to disappear.

Nora refused.

“I stopped trying after that,” she said. “Not because I wanted the children away from you. Because every door carrying your name had been closed in my face.”

Caleb looked toward the sleeping twins.

“Why are you collecting cans?”

Nora stiffened.

“Don’t confuse struggling with asking for your pity.”

She explained that she had lost her school position after rumors surrounding the charitable account dispute reached the district.

She now worked evenings for a community outreach center. The recycling program provided additional income and helped fund diapers and groceries for several families in the neighborhood.

Caleb had thought she was picking through trash for herself.

Even that assumption made him ashamed.

What Brielle Had Forgotten

Owen called Caleb later that night.

“I found the original authorization logs for the charity transfer.”

The electronic signature attached to Nora’s name had been generated from an Ashford Foundation laptop.

The laptop was assigned to Brielle.

Caleb felt cold.

“Are you certain?”

“There is more.”

The supposedly incriminating email from Nora had never been sent from Nora’s account.

It had been created from a draft template, printed, and inserted into Diana’s folder.

The wording came from fragments of two unrelated emails Nora had written months earlier.

Someone had assembled them into a new message.

“Who had access?”

“Your mother. Brielle. Two administrative assistants.”

But only one person had downloaded both original messages shortly before the divorce confrontation.

Brielle.

Caleb stared through the dark window of his office.

Pieces of the past rearranged themselves with sickening clarity.

Brielle had been present everywhere.

Foundation meetings.

Family dinners.

His mother’s house.

His office.

Even the afternoon Nora tried to reach him.

A Mother’s Version of Protection

Caleb arrived at Diana’s home just before midnight.

His mother opened the door wearing a silk robe.

“Caleb? What happened?”

He placed Nora’s returned letter on the entry table.

Diana’s face changed.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

She looked away.

“I believed I was protecting you.”

“From my own children?”

Diana flinched.

“Brielle told me Nora was planning to use the pregnancy to regain access to the family accounts.”

“And you believed her?”

“After what we thought Nora had done, yes.”

Caleb’s voice dropped.

“You signed for this letter.”

Diana sat slowly in a chair.

“I read it.”

Caleb felt something inside him break.

“She told you she was carrying my children.”

Diana’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought there would be time to verify everything.”

“There were babies, Mother. Not a business proposal.”

Diana admitted instructing staff to redirect Nora’s calls.

She admitted telling security not to allow Nora into the office.

But when Caleb asked whether she had fabricated the financial documents, Diana shook her head.

“No. That was Brielle.”

Brielle had told Diana that humiliating Nora was the only way to stop her from manipulating Caleb.
