Part 2 of 3

“She asked for information about your estate documents.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“She said your condition made her concerned about the twins and your assets.”

I stared at him.

Yesterday she didn’t have time to babysit.

Today she wanted information about my estate.

Julian continued.

“Then she asked my assistant what would happen if a court determined that you weren’t capable of managing your own affairs.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

The Visit That Changed Everything

That afternoon, Mom and Brynn appeared in my doorway.

My mother was still dressed in white athletic clothes. Brynn wore an expensive cream jacket I remembered paying for indirectly through one of her monthly allowances.

Neither hugged me.

Neither asked about the children.

Mom placed her handbag on a chair.

“You’ve created a mess.”

I almost laughed.

“I created a mess?”

Brynn crossed her arms.

“My business payment was frozen.”

“You haven’t operated a real business in over a year.”

Her face hardened.

“That’s irrelevant.”

I looked from my sister to my mother.

“You wouldn’t take my children for a few weeks, but somehow you found time to come here because your money stopped.”

Mom’s jaw tightened.

“After everything we’ve done for you, you owe this family some consideration.”

That sentence changed something in me permanently.

“No,” I said. “I think I’ve already paid enough.”

They left angry.

Before leaving, however, Brynn poured me a fresh cup of water.

She smiled.

“At least drink something. You look exhausted.”

I didn’t think anything of it.

I drank.

About fifteen minutes later, a hospital social worker and a behavioral-health specialist entered to perform a routine evaluation.

Then the room began moving.

My hands trembled.

My vision became blurry.

Words became difficult to form.

I knew something was wrong, but I couldn’t explain it.

Within minutes, the evaluation that should have been simple became deeply concerning.

Doctors later found a powerful medication in my system that wasn’t listed anywhere on my treatment chart.

When I finally felt clear-headed again, Natalie was sitting beside me holding Sophie.

“They found something they didn’t give you,” she told me.

My mind immediately returned to that cup.

To Brynn.

To her strange smile.

A Camera Nobody Knew Was Recording

Natalie had brought a small nursery monitor disguised inside a stuffed rabbit.

She had planned to use it while caring for the twins after my discharge.

Earlier that afternoon, she had tested it in my hospital room and accidentally left it running on the bedside shelf.

When we checked the recording, my heart nearly stopped.

The camera had captured Brynn standing near my water.

Her hand disappeared briefly into her purse.

Then she leaned over my cup.

The recording wasn’t perfect, but it was clear enough.

She had added something to the water before handing it to me.

Julian arrived moments later.

I expected him to be relieved by the video.

Instead, he placed a thick folder on the table.

“Your parents filed an emergency petition.”

“For what?”

“Temporary control over the twins and temporary authority over your financial affairs.”

Natalie stared at him.

“After refusing to take them?”

Julian nodded.

Then he opened another file.

“And I think I know why.”

Colin Had Left Me a Warning

After Colin’s passing, I had avoided going through many of his private business files.

It hurt too much.

Julian had recently begun reviewing them because my annual financial audit was approaching.

Inside an encrypted folder, he discovered records Colin had gathered during the months before his death.

There were invoices.

Wire transfers.

Fake vendors.

Consulting payments.

Accounts I had never authorized.

Someone had been quietly draining money from one of my family trusts.

The trail led directly toward Brynn’s old companies and several accounts connected to my mother.

More than three million dollars had disappeared over several years.

“Colin knew,” Julian said.

My eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“I think he was preparing to. His last edits to these files were made only days before he passed away.”

Then Julian told me something even more disturbing.

The specialist examining my damaged SUV had found evidence that an important brake component had been deliberately interfered with.

Near the damaged area, the investigator found a decorative acrylic nail.

Black.

With tiny gold stones.

Brynn had been wearing an identical manicure all week.
