Part 2 of 3

“My daughter is the one who’s suffering.”

Melissa stepped forward.

“I told you she had an accident.”

Andrew replied calmly.

“Then let the professionals finish their assessment.”

When Melissa tried to approach Sophie, the little girl moved closer to her father.

A family services specialist, Lauren Mitchell, had already arrived to speak with the family.

Lauren noticed Sophie’s reaction and gently suggested that the adults give her some space.

Melissa crossed her arms.

“I’m her mother. I have every right to talk to my daughter.”

Lauren remained composed.

“We’re not making assumptions, Mrs. Mercer. We simply want Sophie to feel comfortable enough to speak freely.”

Diane looked furious.

“This is completely unnecessary.”

Before Andrew could answer, his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Evelyn Price.

Andrew, I’m sorry to contact you at a time like this, but there’s something you should know. My front porch camera captured part of what happened yesterday evening. I also noticed Melissa leaving the house while Sophie was crying. If the recording could help, I can provide it.

Andrew read the message twice.

Then he looked at Melissa.

“Where did you go yesterday evening?”

Melissa frowned.

“What?”

“After Sophie got hurt. Where did you go?”

“I had errands to run.”

“And Sophie was home alone?”

Melissa hesitated.

Diane immediately interrupted.

“Andrew, stop questioning your wife in public.”

But Sophie had heard the conversation.

From the examination room, she spoke quietly.

“Mom told me not to open the door until she came back.”

The room became still.

Lauren gently approached Sophie.

“Thank you for telling us. You don’t have to explain everything right now.”

Then Sophie added another sentence.

“Mom said Hannah never listened either.”

Melissa’s face changed.

Andrew turned toward her.

“Who is Hannah?”

For the first time since arriving, Melissa had no immediate answer.

The Secret Hidden in a Blue Folder

Andrew did not continue questioning his wife in front of Sophie.

Instead, he stayed with his daughter while the professionals completed their work.

Later that evening, he contacted his older brother, Daniel Mercer, and explained what had happened.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

“Andrew, focus on Sophie tonight. I’ll help you figure out the practical things tomorrow.”

Andrew also remembered something he had seen several weeks earlier.

Melissa had been sorting documents in their home office when he noticed an old blue folder.

She had quickly closed it and placed it inside a locked drawer.

At the time, Andrew had assumed it contained personal financial records.

Now he wondered whether it had something to do with the name Sophie had mentioned.

The following day, Andrew spoke with a family law attorney, Rachel Sloane.

Rachel advised him to preserve relevant messages and recordings, cooperate with the child protection assessment, and avoid searching through or removing documents he was not legally entitled to access.

Andrew followed her advice.

Then something unexpected happened.

Melissa contacted him and asked to meet privately with their attorneys present.

During that meeting, Andrew asked one question.

“Who is Hannah?”

Melissa stared at the table.

Diane, sitting beside her, became visibly uncomfortable.

“That has nothing to do with Sophie,” Diane said.

Andrew looked at his wife.

“Then why does our daughter know that name?”

Melissa began crying.

After several minutes, she admitted that Hannah was her first daughter.

She had given birth when she was eighteen, long before meeting Andrew.

Her mother had arranged for the baby to be adopted.

Andrew was stunned.

He had never known Melissa had been pregnant before their marriage.

“You have another daughter?”

Melissa nodded.

“Her name was Hannah.”

“And she’s alive?”

“Yes. She would be sixteen now.”

Andrew leaned back.

Nine years of marriage, and he had never heard a single word about this child.

The Truth About Hannah

Melissa explained that she had become pregnant during her final year of high school.

Her parents were deeply concerned about what the situation might mean for her future.

Diane insisted that adoption was the only sensible choice.

Melissa was sent to live temporarily with an aunt in another part of South Carolina.

There, she gave birth to a baby girl.

“I wanted to hold her longer,” Melissa whispered. “But everything happened so quickly. I was scared, and I didn’t know how to stand up for myself.”

Andrew listened.

He could hear the pain in her voice.

He understood that a frightened teenager might make decisions under enormous family pressure.

But he also knew that this history did not excuse what Sophie had experienced.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

Melissa wiped her eyes.

“I thought you’d see me differently.”

“I would’ve wanted to understand.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t know what it was like. My mother told me to put that chapter behind me and never mention it again.”

Diane looked away.

Andrew turned toward her.

“You knew about Hannah all these years?”

“I was trying to protect my daughter’s future.”

“And now you’re asking me to protect your reputation instead of Sophie’s well-being.”

Diane said nothing.

Melissa continued speaking.

She admitted that after Sophie was born, memories of Hannah had returned.

At first, she thought raising Sophie would help her find peace with the past.

Instead, she sometimes felt overwhelmed by guilt and regret.

When Sophie needed attention, Melissa occasionally found herself remembering the daughter she had not raised.

“I know it doesn’t make sense,” she said. “I thought I’d moved on, but I never really did.”

Andrew’s expression remained serious.

“Sophie is seven years old, Melissa. She cannot be responsible for what happened when you were eighteen.”

Melissa began crying again.

“I know I need help.”

“Then I hope you get it. But Sophie needs protection while you work through this.”

For the first time, Melissa did not argue.

The Evidence That Changed the Custody Hearing

Over the following weeks, Andrew cooperated with the family services investigation.

Evelyn voluntarily provided the relevant footage from her porch camera.

The recording did not show everything that happened inside the Mercer home, but it helped establish when Melissa had left and returned.

Other messages and documented observations were also reviewed.

Andrew learned that Evelyn had been worried about Sophie for some time.

One afternoon, she met him outside the attorney’s office.

“I should’ve spoken sooner,” she admitted. “I heard arguments from across the street, but I kept hoping things would improve.”

Andrew shook his head.

“You helped when it mattered. Thank you.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“She’s a wonderful little girl. She deserves to enjoy being a child.”

At the temporary custody hearing, Andrew’s attorney presented the available evidence and the recommendations arising from the assessment.

Melissa’s attorney explained that she had agreed to begin counseling and wanted an opportunity to rebuild her relationship with Sophie.

The judge considered the medical documentation, the child’s reported experiences, and the safety concerns.

Andrew was granted temporary primary custody.

Melissa’s contact with Sophie would take place under supervision while the case continued.

Diane was not permitted to contact Sophie independently under the temporary arrangements.

Outside the courtroom, Melissa approached Andrew.

“Do you think she’ll ever forgive me?”

Andrew looked at her sadly.

“I don’t know. Right now, she needs time, and she needs to know that the adults around her will keep her safe.”

Melissa nodded.

There was nothing else to say.

A Small Apartment With Yellow Curtains

Andrew decided not to return to the family house while the legal process continued.

Instead, he rented a two-bedroom apartment near a quiet park.

It was much smaller than the home Sophie had grown up in.

There was no formal dining room, no enormous backyard, and no expensive furniture.

But there was sunlight in the kitchen every morning.

And Sophie could choose how to decorate her bedroom.

She picked yellow curtains, a soft blue comforter, and little stars that glowed on the ceiling after the lights went out.

Andrew bought her a small bookshelf for her favorite stories.

He also placed a comfortable chair beside her bed so they could read together every evening.

At first, Sophie struggled to settle into her new routine.

Sometimes she woke up in the middle of the night and called for him.

“Daddy, are you still here?”

Andrew would walk into her room and sit beside her.

“I’m right here, sweetheart.”

“Are we going back to the old house?”

“Not right now. We’re going to stay somewhere you feel comfortable.”

She would hold his hand until she fell asleep again.

Andrew also arranged for Sophie to meet regularly with a child therapist who specialized in helping children process frightening experiences.
