Part 2 of 3

“I thought I’d lost you forever.”

Frederick held him tightly.

“I know, son. And I’ve missed you every day.”

Behind them, the other riders remained silent.

Even Fletcher turned away to give father and son a moment of privacy.

The Man Who Betrayed Their Family

After helping Frederick into the farmhouse, the riders contacted medical assistance.

Edith brought him a blanket while Warren sat beside him.

Frederick was exhausted, but he insisted on explaining the danger.

“Bernard found out where I was staying,” he said.

Warren leaned closer.

“Why is he still looking for you after all these years?”

“Because he believes I have the original financial records. Those documents could expose everything.”

Frederick explained that Bernard Whitlock had not always used that name.

His original identity was Calvin Rourke.

Years earlier, Calvin had worked with several businessmen connected to the transportation company.

He had gained Frederick’s trust while secretly helping conceal their activities.

When Frederick discovered the suspicious records, Calvin realized that his comfortable life could collapse.

He helped arrange Frederick’s disappearance and later adopted another identity.

Warren shook his head.

“He stood beside me at your funeral. He told me you would have been proud of me.”

Frederick lowered his eyes.

“He knew exactly what he was doing.”

Then Frederick took a folded piece of paper from his coat.

Several names were written on it.

Warren recognized a former county official and a businessman who had attended family gatherings years earlier.

“These people were involved too?”

Frederick nodded.

“Some helped conceal the records. Others knew more than they admitted.”

Warren studied the paper.

“Then we need to give this to the authorities.”

“We will. But first, there’s something your mother left you.”

Warren looked confused.

His mother, Dorothy Ashford, had supposedly passed away twelve years earlier after a car accident during a storm.

He still visited her grave every year.

“What did Mom leave?”

Frederick took a slow breath.

“Her wedding ring.”

The Secret Hidden Inside a Wedding Ring

Warren remembered the ring immediately.

It was a simple gold band with a small blue stone.

His mother had given it to him shortly before her supposed accident, telling him to keep it safe.

He had placed it inside a wooden jewelry box at home.

“What does her ring have to do with this?”

Frederick looked directly at him.

“There’s a tiny compartment beneath the stone. Your mother hid a key inside it.”

Warren stared at him.

“A key to what?”

“A storage compartment containing the documents I collected thirty years ago.”

Warren leaned back.

For twelve years, the answer to a mystery that had consumed his father’s life had been sitting inside his own bedroom.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because she believed you would be safer without knowing.”

Warren stood.

“Then I’ll go get it.”

Frederick immediately reached for his arm.

“No, son. Don’t go home alone. Calvin’s people may already have searched your house.”

Warren called Fletcher and asked several trusted club members to check the property.

Twenty minutes later, his phone rang.

“Warren, someone has been inside your house,” Fletcher reported.

Warren closed his eyes.

“Did they find the ring?”

“No. The jewelry box was still there, but there’s something else.”

“What?”

“A photograph of your mother was sitting on the kitchen table.”

Warren frowned.

“An old photograph?”

Fletcher hesitated.

“It has yesterday’s date written on the back.”

Warren felt his stomach tighten.

His mother had been gone for twelve years.

How could anyone have taken her picture yesterday?

Frederick heard the conversation and slowly lowered his head.

Warren turned toward him.

“Dad, what aren’t you telling me?”

Frederick remained silent.

“Please. I’ve spent thirty years believing things that weren’t true. Don’t make me guess anymore.”

Finally, Frederick looked up.

“Warren, your mother is alive.”

The Second Goodbye That Never Happened

Warren stared at his father.

“What did you just say?”

Frederick’s eyes filled with tears.

“Dorothy survived. The accident twelve years ago was arranged to make everyone believe she was gone.”

Warren stepped backward.

He remembered standing beside his mother’s grave.

He remembered placing flowers there on Mother’s Day.

He remembered every Christmas he had spent wishing he could hear her voice again.

“You let me believe both of you were gone?”

Frederick struggled to answer.

Edith gently spoke.

“Your mother discovered that Calvin was watching the family. She believed disappearing would prevent him from using you to reach your father.”

Warren shook his head.

“She could have trusted me.”

“She wanted to,” Frederick whispered. “But she was frightened that knowing the truth would put you in danger.”

Warren walked to the window.

He understood that his parents had been afraid.

He understood that they had tried to protect him.

But understanding their reasons did not erase the loneliness he had carried.

“Where is she now?”

Frederick looked toward Edith.

“She’s been living under another name. We haven’t been together openly for years, but she knows you’re here.”

Before Warren could ask another question, one of the riders hurried inside.

“Warren, a black sedan just turned into the driveway.”

Frederick’s expression changed.

“That’s Calvin.”

An Unexpected Visitor at the Farmhouse

Warren stepped onto the porch.

A black sedan stopped near the gate, followed by two other vehicles.

An elderly man wearing an expensive charcoal coat climbed out.

Warren recognized him immediately.

Bernard Whitlock.

Or Calvin Rourke, as his father had called him.

The man smiled when he saw Warren.

“Well, this is quite a family gathering.”

Warren remained calm.

“What do you want, Bernard?”

The older man’s smile faded slightly.

“I think we both know why I’m here.”

“You want the documents.”

“I want something that belongs to me.”

Frederick appeared in the doorway.

“Those records were never yours, Calvin.”

For a moment, the visitor looked genuinely surprised.

“Frederick. I see you’re still causing complications.”

Warren stepped between them.

“You’ve kept my family apart long enough. This ends today.”

Calvin glanced at the twelve riders standing nearby.

“Are you planning to intimidate me with your friends?”

Warren shook his head.

“They’re here because they care about my family. And because I don’t intend to let anyone disappear again.”

Calvin’s expression hardened.

“Give me the key, Warren.”

“Why? So you can hide the truth for another thirty years?”

“You don’t understand what you’re getting involved in.”

Warren looked at his father.

Then he turned back.

“I understand that my parents lost decades of their lives because of secrets. I understand that I grew up believing I was alone. And I understand that the truth belongs with the authorities.”

Calvin took a slow breath.

“Your mother is still alive, Warren. Perhaps you should think carefully before making decisions.”
