Part 2 of 3

Now I understood why he had been so eager for my signature.

“You planned this?”

Wesley stood.

“Nobody will question a sudden medical emergency. They’ll think you became confused and wandered away while I was trying to get help.”

I tried to speak, but my voice failed.

He looked down at me one final time.

“Goodbye, Sabrina.”

Then he returned to his car.

I watched the taillights disappear around the bend, leaving me alone in the cold mountain darkness.

Five Minutes That Changed Everything

I lay on the gravel, struggling to remain conscious.

The night air was freezing, and every breath required effort.

But beneath the fear, another part of my mind was working.

Before my marriage, I had earned a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology and completed research at Harvard.

I had once been offered a senior research position with a major biotechnology company.

I understood enough about toxic substances to recognize that my symptoms could indicate a serious exposure.

The bitter taste, sudden weakness, dizziness, and irregular heartbeat were deeply concerning.

I couldn’t identify the substance without medical testing, and I knew I couldn’t treat myself on that mountainside.

I needed emergency care.

I tried to move toward the road, hoping someone might see me.

My fingers scraped against the gravel as I pulled myself a few inches forward.

Then I heard a distant engine.

At first, I thought Wesley had returned.

But the approaching headlights belonged to a dark SUV.

The vehicle stopped.

A familiar voice called my name.

“Miss Sabrina! Can you hear me?”

It was Everett Brooks, the longtime driver and estate manager who had worked for my father.

He hurried toward me and knelt beside the road.

“Oh, thank God. I found you.”

I could barely speak.

“Everett… help me.”

He immediately called 911 and gave the dispatcher our location.

While we waited for emergency responders, he placed his coat over me and kept talking.

“Stay with me, sweetheart. Help is coming.”

Everett had known me since I was a teenager.

After my father’s passing, he had remained responsible for several family properties and transportation arrangements.

I had previously authorized him to access the location of our household vehicles through our shared fleet-management account.

Earlier that evening, he had received an unusual call from one of the catering staff, who was concerned about my sudden illness.

When Everett noticed Wesley’s vehicle traveling away from the nearest hospitals and toward the mountains, he immediately became suspicious.

He followed the last recorded location.

His instincts saved my life.

The Truth Inside the Hospital Room

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

A cardiac monitor beeped steadily beside me.

My throat felt dry, and my entire body ached.

Everett sat near the window.

Beside him stood Dr. Adrian Mercer, a physician I had known during my years in medical research.

“Sabrina, you’re awake,” Adrian said, stepping closer.

I tried to sit up, but he gently asked me to remain still.

“You’ve been through a serious medical emergency. The team has been monitoring your heart and treating the suspected poisoning.”

“Was it something in the soup?”

Adrian nodded carefully.

“Your symptoms and initial findings are concerning. Additional toxicology testing is underway, and we’ve documented everything for the appropriate authorities.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“Wesley gave it to me.”

Everett leaned forward.

“I know what he did, Sabrina. And we’re going to make sure the investigators know too.”

For several minutes, I couldn’t speak.

I had spent seven years defending Wesley.

I had excused his indifference, tolerated his mother’s insults, and convinced myself that his coldness was simply the result of stress.

Now I was lying in a hospital because the man I trusted had left me on an isolated mountain road.

And somehow, that was only the beginning of what I was about to discover.

The Career I Gave Up for Love

While recovering, I thought about the woman I had been before meeting Wesley.

I had returned to California after completing my doctoral studies, excited about building a career in medical research.

A biotechnology company had offered me a leadership position with an excellent salary.

When I shared the news with Wesley, I expected him to celebrate.

Instead, he became distant.

For three days, he barely spoke to me.

Finally, he explained why.

“Sabrina, I want to be the man who takes care of our family,” he said. “How am I supposed to feel if my wife earns more than I do?”

I tried to reassure him.

“Your worth isn’t measured by your paycheck.”

But he shook his head.

“I want you to trust me enough to let me provide for you.”

I loved him.

So I declined the position.

I told myself there would always be other opportunities.

Gradually, I stopped discussing my education, my professional ambitions, and the financial responsibilities I had inherited from my father.

I became the quiet wife Wesley wanted.

And because I had never needed his income to survive, I secretly supported our lifestyle.

At first, I considered it an act of love.

Looking back, I realized I had been giving away pieces of myself to make someone else feel important.

The Fortune He Never Understood

My father, a successful real estate investor, had spent decades building a substantial portfolio of properties and financial assets.

When he passed away, I became the primary beneficiary of several trusts.

The inheritance was large enough to support me comfortably for the rest of my life.

But I had never wanted money to define my marriage.

I allowed Wesley to believe that most of our financial stability came from his career.

Whenever his business accounts were running low, I arranged legitimate transfers from my personal distributions to help him.

Over time, he became accustomed to receiving what he believed were bonuses and investment returns.

Patricia enjoyed expensive handbags, country club memberships, and lavish vacations.

Wesley paid for them proudly.

What neither of them acknowledged was that much of the money originated from me.

Then came the new mansion in Calabasas.

Wesley told everyone he had purchased it after receiving a major promotion.

In reality, funds connected to my inheritance had financed the property.

I knew I had contributed the money.

What I did not yet know was how Wesley had arranged for the ownership documents to benefit him.
