Behind the Smiles: What Diana and Michael Jackson’s Relationship Was Hidden

Part 1 of 2

They seemed to belong to completely different worlds. Yet, between the world’s most beloved princess and the King of Pop, a rare and sincere friendship was born — one that unfolded quietly, far from the glare of the cameras.

A Memorable Meeting

It was July 1988. Michael Jackson was in London for his Bad world tour, set to perform that night at the legendary Wembley Stadium. Among the audience were none other than Prince Charles and Princess Diana — already adored across the globe as the embodiment of grace, kindness, and compassion.

Backstage, cameras captured the moment when Michael, visibly nervous, met the “People’s Princess.” Diana, radiant as ever, greeted him warmly and told him how much she looked forward to his show. What few knew then was that this brief encounter would spark a genuine connection between two of the most famous people on earth.

A Controversial Song and a Playful Exchange

Before the concert, Jackson had made a bold decision: he removed Dirty Diana from the setlist, fearing the song might offend his royal guest. The title alone seemed too risky.

But when Diana learned of it, she teasingly questioned his choice. When Michael explained, she laughed and told him she loved the song — and insisted he perform it. Taking her advice, he sang Dirty Diana that night, giving the crowd one of the most unforgettable moments of the tour.

A Gift of Generosity

That evening wasn’t just about music. Jackson also donated £172,000 to The Prince’s Trust, a charity founded by Prince Charles to support young people, and another £116,000 to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for children.
