Driving License Renewal: What’s The Age Limit And What Changes After 50, 70, And 80?

Part 1 of 2

Updated deadlines, requirements after age 70 and 80, necessary documents, and renewal costs

As you get older, renewing your driver’s license follows specific rules set by Italy’s Highway Code. There is no maximum age limit for driving in Italy, but once you pass certain age thresholds, medical checks become more frequent and more detailed.

Here’s what you need to know about age limits for renewing your license and the latest deadlines based on age groups.

How Often You Need to Renew Your License Based on Age

The validity period of your driver’s license depends on both the license category and the age of the driver. Below is the schedule for a Category B license, the most common type used for cars and light motorcycles:

Up to age 50: Renewal every 10 years

Ages 50 to 70: Renewal every 5 years

Ages 70 to 80: Renewal every 3 years

Important: These intervals may change based on a doctor’s assessment of the driver’s health.

Medical Exam: What’s Required for Renewal

Each time you renew your license, a medical checkup is mandatory. During the exam, the doctor will assess:

Vision and hearing

Reflexes and motor skills

Overall physical and mental health

If necessary, the doctor may refer you for additional specialist evaluations. In cases of specific health conditions, the renewal period may be shortened.

Documents Needed to Renew Your License

To renew your driver’s license, you’ll need the following:

A valid ID card

Your health insurance card (tessera sanitaria)

Your current or recently expired driver’s license

One recent passport-sized photo
