Part 1 of 3

The Voice I Never Expected to Hear Again

Eight months after I walked away from the woman I loved, I heard her voice in a hospital hallway in Cleveland, Ohio.

I was there to visit my fiancée, who had undergone a minor procedure that morning. I had barely stepped out of the elevator when a familiar voice stopped me.

“His oxygen level is dropping. Please get the neonatal team in here.”

I turned so quickly that I nearly collided with a nurse.

Dr. Laurel Prescott stood outside the newborn care unit, speaking to another physician. Her auburn hair was tied back, and exhaustion showed beneath her eyes.

I knew that voice better than my own.

Laurel had been my girlfriend. Eight months earlier, she had told me she was pregnant, and I had accused her of carrying another man’s child.

My name is Graham Whitcomb. I was thirty-eight, the president of Whitcomb Therapeutics, and wealthy enough to believe that almost every problem could be solved with money.

But standing in that hallway, watching Laurel disappear behind the neonatal unit doors, I understood that the most important thing I had ever lost could not be purchased.

A nurse hurried past carrying a small medical blanket.

“Is Dr. Prescott treating a newborn?” I asked.

“She’s with her son,” the nurse answered.

Her son.

The words settled heavily in my chest.

I looked toward the closed doors, suddenly terrified of what I might discover on the other side.

The Mistake That Destroyed Everything

Laurel and I had been together for nearly three years.

She was a physician who worked with families affected by inherited heart conditions. I admired her intelligence, but what I loved most was how gently she treated people who had nothing to offer her.

My father, Richard Whitcomb, never approved of our relationship.

He believed I should marry someone whose family could strengthen our company.

When Laurel told me she was pregnant, I should have held her and asked how she was feeling.

Instead, I remembered the photographs my father had shown me.

They pictured Laurel meeting a genetic researcher named Dr. Owen Fletcher at a restaurant. My father claimed they were involved romantically.

I believed him.

“Tell me the truth, Laurel. Is this baby mine?” I demanded.

She stared at me as though she no longer recognized the man standing in front of her.

“You know how much I love you. How can you ask me that?”

“Then agree to a paternity test.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’ll never refuse to establish the truth, Graham. But I won’t stay with someone who has already decided I’m lying.”

She asked me to leave.

I did.

Within weeks, my father introduced me to Meredith Sloan, the daughter of a powerful investment partner. Our engagement followed soon afterward.

I told myself I was moving forward.

In reality, I was hiding from what I had done.

The Little Boy Behind the Glass

At the hospital, I finally persuaded a nurse to tell Laurel that I was waiting.

When she appeared, her expression changed immediately.

“What are you doing here?”

“I heard your voice. Someone told me you had a son.”

She folded her arms.

“His name is Oliver.”

“Was he born recently?”

“He’s premature. His lungs are still developing, and the doctors are watching him carefully.”

I struggled to speak.

“Laurel, is he my son?”

She looked at me for a long moment.

“He’s the baby I told you about eight months ago.”

My knees felt weak.

Through the window, I saw a tiny newborn lying beneath a soft blue blanket, surrounded by medical equipment.

His little hand rested beside his cheek.

I had never seen anyone so small.

“Can I stay?” I whispered.

Laurel’s eyes glistened.

“You can stand here. But don’t mistake that for forgiveness.”

I nodded.

For the first time in years, I had no argument, no explanation, and no amount of money that could make anything better.

The Letter My Father Never Let Me Read

The following afternoon, my father’s longtime assistant, Peter Langford, came to the hospital.

He looked uncomfortable before he even sat down.

“There’s something you need to know about Laurel,” he said.

He handed me a copy of a letter.

It had been written months earlier, shortly after our separation.

Laurel had explained that Owen was helping her investigate irregularities in a cardiovascular drug trial sponsored by Whitcomb Therapeutics.

Some patients had developed concerning heart symptoms, but their records had been distributed among separate review teams.

No single investigator could easily recognize the pattern.

The photographs of Laurel and Owen showed research meetings, not an affair.

“Why didn’t I receive this?” I asked.

Peter lowered his eyes.

“Your father intercepted it.”

I stared at him.

“He knew what Laurel was trying to tell me?”

“He knew she had information that could seriously damage the company.”

I looked through the glass at Oliver.

My father had allowed me to abandon a pregnant woman because he was afraid she might expose problems inside our business.

And I had made it easy for him.

I had believed the worst about Laurel without giving her a fair chance to explain.
