Emotional reason King Charles broke major protocol for Kate Middleton at Trooping the Colour

Part 1 of 2

As London prepares for this year’s Trooping the Colour celebration on Saturday, June 14, royal fans are looking back at a subtle but powerful moment from last year’s event — when King Charles III broke with tradition for a deeply personal reason.

Thousands are expected to line the Mall once again this weekend, drawn by the grandeur of the royal birthday parade. A tradition dating back more than two centuries, Trooping the Colour isn’t just a ceremonial spectacle — it’s a statement of unity, resilience, and national pride.

This will be King Charles’ third time presiding over the event as monarch, and while the spotlight will be on the precision of the military procession, the Royal Family’s appearance on the palace balcony always carries symbolic weight. Last year, however, that symbolism took on new meaning.

A Departure From Tradition

By longstanding protocol, the royal balcony lineup is carefully choreographed. Members of the Royal Family usually appear in a structured arrangement — the King and Queen at the center, flanked by the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children.

But in 2023, observers noticed something unusual: Kate Middleton, The Princess of Wales, was standing beside King Charles, not next to her husband, Prince William.

At the time, both Charles and Kate were undergoing cancer treatment. While details were kept private, the change in positioning was widely interpreted as a show of solidarity between the two — a gentle, human moment amid royal formality.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold later suggested that the decision was no accident. “It may have been subtle,” he remarked, “but that small change in positioning sent a message: that the King and Kate were facing their challenges together.”
