Every Sunday at Exactly 7:30, My 72-Year-Old Mom’s Younger Boyfriend Rushed Off With a Different Excuse, Making Us Certain There Was Another Woman—Until Mom’s Birthday, When My Daughter Secretly Followed Him and Discovered the Truth

Part 2 of 3

“I didn’t say I was doing anything.”

“You have the same face you had before you secretly dyed the dog’s tail blue.”

“That was washable.”

“That is not the point.”

For once, she laughed.

But something in her expression told me the subject wasn’t finished.

The Birthday Dinner

Mom’s birthday fell on a Sunday that year.

She turned seventy-four.

I planned a simple dinner at her house with roasted chicken, garlic potatoes, green beans, and a chocolate cream pie.

Chocolate cream was Calvin’s favorite.

Mom spent nearly an hour getting ready.

She wore a deep blue dress I hadn’t seen before.

Her silver hair was neatly curled.

She wore a pair of pearl earrings my father had given her on their thirty-fifth anniversary.

When she walked into the living room, Sadie smiled.

“Grandma, you look amazing.”

Mom blushed.

“At my age, amazing is ambitious.”

“No. At your age, amazing means you finally know what suits you.”

At exactly six, Calvin arrived.

He carried red roses, a wrapped book, and the same brown leather shoulder bag he brought nearly everywhere.

Dinner was wonderful.

Mom laughed more than I had heard her laugh in years.

Calvin told stories from his childhood in western Pennsylvania.

Sadie even seemed to relax around him.

For an hour, I began wondering whether we had all been unfair.

Then Mom brought the pie to the table.

Calvin looked at the clock.

7:23.

His expression changed.

Mom noticed.

So did I.

At 7:26, he stood.

“Maggie, I’m really sorry.”

The joy disappeared from her face.

“Tonight too?”

Calvin looked miserable.

“I have to go.”

Mom stared at him.

“It’s my birthday.”

“I know.”

“Can’t you stay ten more minutes?”

His eyes dropped.

“I wish I could.”

For the first time, Mom didn’t hide her disappointment.

“Then go.”

Calvin reached for her hand, but she pulled it back.

He quietly picked up his leather bag and left.

The untouched chocolate pie sat between us.

Sadie Followed Him

Less than a minute later, Sadie pushed away from the table.

“I’m going outside.”

I knew immediately.

“Sadie, don’t.”

She grabbed her jacket.

“I’m not going to do anything stupid.”

Those were exactly the words teenagers said before doing something stupid.

“Sadie.”

But the door had already closed.

I started after her, then stopped when Mom said softly, “Let her go.”

I turned.

Mom was staring at Calvin’s empty chair.

Maybe a part of her wanted Sadie to find the truth too.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then forty.

I called Sadie twice.

No answer.

Just as I was reaching for my keys, headlights swept across the front window.

Sadie rushed through the door.

She was breathing hard.

Her face was pale.

And she was carrying Calvin’s brown leather bag.

I stood instantly.

“Sadie, what did you do?”

She placed the bag on the table.

“Mom, please don’t yell yet.”

“Where did you get that?”

“From Calvin’s car.”

Mom stared at her.

“You went into his car?”

“The door wasn’t locked. I know it was wrong. I know. But you need to see what’s inside.”

I was furious.

But the fear in Sadie’s eyes stopped me from shouting.

She unzipped the bag.

What We Expected Wasn’t There

I expected something that would explain every suspicion.

Maybe photographs.

Maybe evidence of a second relationship.

Maybe letters.

Instead, Sadie pulled out a small stack of laminated cards.

Each card had a simple picture and large printed words.

A cup.

A toothbrush.

A sweater.

A bathroom.

A photograph of Calvin.

Under his picture were the words:

CALVIN — MY SON.

Mom’s face changed.

Sadie removed an old music box, several family photographs, medication schedules, and a small notebook.

Then she held up another laminated card.

It read:

MY NAME IS LORRAINE.

I AM SAFE.

CALVIN IS MY SON.

HE TAKES CARE OF ME.

Mom covered her mouth.

“Lorraine…”

I looked at her.

“You know that name?”

“His mother.”

Sadie nodded.

“That’s where he goes every Sunday.”

She explained that she had followed Calvin from a distance while her friend’s older sister drove.

He had gone directly to a memory-care residence about fifteen minutes south of Mom’s house.

“I saw him rush inside,” Sadie said. “One of the staff members greeted him like they knew him well.”
