For Nine Months, My Husband Told Me, “You Can Handle It Yourself.” When Our Daughter Was Born, I Did Exactly That. He Rushed Into the Hospital Three Hours Late, Demanding to Know Why No One Had Called Him. I Just Looked at Him and Said, “You’re Not Late for the Birth, Derek. You’re Late for Us.” Then My Lawyer Walked In With the Papers I’d Signed Weeks Ago

Part 2 of 3

Then he saw the bassinet.

He stopped.

“Is that her?”

I almost laughed at the question.

“That’s your daughter.”

Mom lifted Maisie and gently placed her in his arms.

Derek looked terrified.

Then Maisie stretched one tiny hand against his shirt.

His face changed.

His eyes filled.

“She’s so small.”

For one moment, I saw the man I had once believed he would become.

Then he looked at me.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

The tenderness vanished from the room.

“I sent you messages last night.”

He pulled out his phone.

Three unread messages were waiting.

One told him the doctor believed labor could start at any time.

Another asked when he was coming home.

The third simply said:

“Please call me when you see this.”

Derek stared at the screen.

“Yesterday was chaos. I barely checked my phone.”

I leaned back against the pillows.

“I know.”

“But this was different, Tessa. This was our daughter being born.”

“It was different for me too.”

He opened his mouth, but I shook my head.

“I don’t need another explanation today.”

Flowers for the Wrong Woman

For the next two days, Derek tried desperately to become involved.

He arrived early.

He brought coffee for Mom.

He asked nurses questions about feeding and diapers.

On my second morning in the hospital, he walked in carrying an enormous arrangement of white lilies.

“Your favorites.”

I looked at the flowers.

Then at him.

“I don’t like lilies.”

His smile disappeared.

“You don’t?”

“Your sister does. I like hydrangeas.”

He stared at the bouquet for several seconds.

It was such a small mistake.

Yet somehow, it explained our marriage better than any argument could.

Derek knew what coffee I ordered because he saw the cup.

He knew what car I drove because it sat in our garage.

He knew what time I left for work.

But somewhere along the way, he had stopped knowing me.

On the third afternoon, Colin Reeves arrived carrying a slim navy folder.

Derek was standing beside the window.

“Who’s this?” he asked.

Colin offered his hand.

“Colin Reeves. I represent Tessa.”

Derek frowned.

“Represent her for what?”

I opened the drawer beside my hospital bed and removed my copy of the documents.

“For this.”

Derek read the first page.

His face slowly changed.

“Divorce?”

“Yes.”

He stared at me.

“You prepared this before the baby was born?”

“Yes.”

“How long have you been planning to leave?”

I looked down at Maisie sleeping against my chest.

“Long enough to stop confusing hope with change.”

The Question He Finally Asked

Derek initially believed I would reconsider.

He thought I was exhausted.

He thought my mother had influenced me.

He thought the stress of becoming parents had made everything seem worse than it really was.

But Colin had prepared me for that.

I had saved the messages.

“Go without me.”

“Can we discuss this after my meeting?”

“You worry too much.”

“I can’t leave work every time you have an appointment.”

None of those messages looked terrible by themselves.

Together, they told a story.

More importantly, I did not need to prove Derek was a terrible person.

He wasn’t.

I only needed to accept that our marriage no longer felt like a partnership.

When Maisie was almost two weeks old, I returned to our house to collect my belongings.

My younger brother, Nolan, came with me.

Derek was at work.

The house looked exactly as I had left it.

My mug still sat beside the sink.

A blanket was folded over the couch.

Our wedding photograph stood on the dresser upstairs.

I looked at the smiling woman in that picture.

She had believed love meant patience.

She believed being understanding was the same as being strong.

She believed that someday Derek would become less busy, and then their real life would begin.

I removed the photograph from its frame and placed it gently on the dresser.

I took my clothes, my books, and Maisie’s things.

Nothing else.

That evening, Derek came to my mother’s home in Worthington.

Maisie had just fallen asleep.

Mom started to tell him I was resting, but I heard his voice and stepped outside.

We sat on the front porch.

For the first time in weeks, Derek was not angry.

He simply looked tired.

“I went home today,” he said.

“I know.”

“Your closet is almost empty.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the street.

Then he asked the first question that actually mattered.

“When did I lose you?”

I thought about it.

“Maybe at the twenty-week ultrasound.”

He frowned.

“What happened then?”

I stared at him.

He truly did not remember.

“The doctor saw something she wanted checked more carefully near Maisie’s heart.”

His face went pale.

“What?”

“I called you four times.”

Derek said nothing.

“For three days, I waited for additional results. I sat in waiting rooms watching couples comfort each other while trying not to imagine the worst.”

He covered his mouth with one hand.

I continued.

“You finally texted me that if it were serious, the doctor would handle it, and asked me not to keep calling because you were preparing for a presentation.”

His shoulders dropped.
