It Has Little Metal Legs.” He Demanded A New Examination—And His Trusted Adviser’s Reaction Made Him Wonder What Had Really Been Hidden There.

Part 2 of 3

She knew Maisie possessed an active imagination, and she had listened to enough stories about imaginary animals and mysterious creatures to recognize that children could interpret unfamiliar objects in remarkable ways.

Nevertheless, the little girl’s tone unsettled her.

Maisie did not sound excited or playful.

She sounded as though she were describing something she had carefully examined and still did not understand.

Rachel looked toward the sofa.

From where she stood, she could see only a faint irregularity beneath Nathaniel’s hairline, partly concealed by the angle of his head.

She remembered the warnings about his injury, the repeated instructions from Charles Bennett, and the nervous way other employees reacted whenever the subject arose.

“We need to go, sweetheart,” she whispered.

She lifted Maisie into her arms and turned toward the library doors, already rehearsing an apology in case someone asked why they had finished cleaning early.

Behind her, the leather sofa creaked.

Rachel stopped.

A moment later, Nathaniel Whitaker opened his eyes.

He woke with the sudden alertness of someone who had spent years training himself to notice unexpected movement, and before Rachel could explain what had happened, he reached forward and caught Maisie’s wrist.

The little girl stared at him, startled.

Rachel instinctively tightened her hold around her daughter.

“Mr. Whitaker, I’m so sorry. She didn’t understand. I should have been watching her.”

Nathaniel looked from Rachel to Maisie, his expression still clouded by sleep.

“What was she doing?”

Rachel swallowed.

“She was curious about your injury, sir. I stopped her as soon as I noticed.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“Did she touch my neck?”

Rachel hesitated just long enough for the answer to become obvious.

Before she could speak, Maisie answered for herself.

“I only wanted to see the little bug.”

Nathaniel went very still.

The rain continued tapping against the windows, and somewhere beyond the library doors, a grandfather clock began marking the quarter hour.

“What little bug?” he asked.

Part Four: The Thing Beneath His Skin

Rachel expected Nathaniel to become angry, and considering everything she had heard about his temper during the worst periods of his recovery, she would not have been surprised if he ordered them to leave the estate immediately.

Instead, his grip loosened.

He released Maisie’s wrist and leaned forward, studying her face with an intensity that made Rachel even more uncomfortable.

“Tell me exactly what you saw.”

Maisie looked toward her mother, seeking permission.

Rachel hesitated, then gave a small nod.

“It was right here,” the child said, pointing toward the back of her own neck. “It was little and shiny, like a silver beetle, except it wasn’t moving.”

Nathaniel slowly raised one hand toward the familiar tender spot beneath his hairline, then stopped before touching it.

For three years, he had avoided that area because the slightest pressure could produce a sharp, unpleasant sensation that sometimes lingered for hours.

“Did it look like a piece of metal?” he asked.

Maisie thought carefully.

“Kind of, but it had tiny things on the sides, like legs. And the middle was smooth.”

Rachel tried to intervene.

“Mr. Whitaker, she’s only five. She may have mistaken the scar for something else.”

Nathaniel barely seemed to hear her.

His attention remained fixed on Maisie.

“Could you draw it for me?”

The question surprised both mother and daughter.

Maisie nodded.

Nathaniel pointed toward the coloring book lying open on the carpet, and Rachel reluctantly retrieved it, along with a pencil from the desk.

The little girl sat at the coffee table and began drawing, her small hand moving slowly as she tried to reproduce the shape she remembered.

Nathaniel watched without speaking.

After several minutes, Maisie pushed the paper toward him.

The drawing showed a narrow oval with several short lines extending from its sides and a tiny dark circle near one end.

It was unmistakably childish, yet something about its arrangement made Nathaniel uncomfortable.

He had seen photographs of the fragments removed after his accident, and none had resembled anything so orderly.

He also remembered that the surgeons had never shown him a clear image of the remaining fragment, explaining that its location made further examination unnecessary unless his symptoms became substantially worse.

That explanation had seemed reasonable at the time.

Now he found himself wondering why he had never asked to see the original medical records.

“Who told you about the piece in my neck?” he asked Rachel.

“Mr. Bennett, sir. He explained it when I started working here.”

Nathaniel looked toward the closed library doors.

“Of course he did.”

His voice was quiet, but Rachel noticed a change in his expression.

For the first time since waking, he seemed less concerned about the interruption than about the possibility that something important had been overlooked.

He studied the drawing again.

“Maisie, when you said it was looking at you, what did you mean?”

The child pointed to the tiny dark circle.

“That part. It looked like an eye when the light touched it.”

Nathaniel sat back slowly.

He understood that a child’s description could not establish what lay beneath his skin, and he knew that scar tissue sometimes developed unusual shapes after complicated injuries.

Still, the drawing had raised a question he could no longer dismiss.

Why had every explanation about his condition come through Charles?

And why had he accepted those explanations without ever hearing them directly from an independent specialist?

Part Five: The Man Who Always Had an Answer

Charles Bennett entered the library less than ten minutes later, carrying a tablet and wearing the polished, reassuring expression that had become familiar to everyone in the household.
