Part 2 of 3

Sloane looked pleased.

“Maybe now she’ll understand that actions have consequences.”

I looked at my fiancée and realized I needed answers immediately.

That evening, I called my company’s information technology director, Everett Sloan.

“I need you to recover an email from six years ago. Check every archived account and backup we still legally retain.”

At 3:12 the following morning, my phone rang.

“Wesley, we found it.”

I sat upright.

“What did you find?”

“An email from Mallory arrived on April twenty-second. It was opened from Sloane’s workstation and deleted eleven minutes later.”

I closed my eyes.

But Everett wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else. We recovered a folder containing the wedding photographs that ended your marriage.”

Forty-Two Photographs and One Terrible Truth

The next morning, Everett showed me everything.

The folder contained forty-two photographs from the Newport wedding.

Only six had ever reached me.

The remaining pictures told a completely different story.

The man beside Mallory appeared with his wife and three children. Other photographs showed him accompanying Mallory down a hallway before returning to the reception.

The hotel reservation that supposedly proved their relationship had never come from the hotel.

It had been created on Sloane’s computer.

I stared at the evidence.

For six years, I had believed my wife betrayed me.

Now I knew someone had deliberately arranged the photographs to make an innocent interaction look suspicious.

But the worst part wasn’t what Sloane had done.

It was what I had done afterward.

I had refused to hear my wife’s explanation.

I had let my pride replace trust.

And because of that decision, I had missed my daughter’s first steps, first words, first day of school, and every birthday she had celebrated.

I canceled my Chicago business meetings.

A twelve-million-dollar acquisition could wait.

My daughter couldn’t.

The Apology That Came Six Years Too Late

Mallory was staying with her older sister, Daphne, in a quiet Chicago neighborhood while the airline investigated the complaint.

When I arrived at the small family-owned bakery Daphne operated, she recognized me immediately.

“You have a lot of nerve coming here, Wesley.”

“I know. But I need to speak with Mallory.”

Daphne folded her arms.

“She waited for you for months. Do you understand that?”

Before I could answer, Juniper appeared from the kitchen.

“Hey! You’re the man from the airplane!”

She held up Biscuit.

“We’re making cookies. Do you want one?”

I crouched beside her.

“I’d love one.”

Daphne quietly led Juniper away.

A few minutes later, Mallory stepped into the room.

She wore jeans and a soft gray sweater. Without her uniform, she looked so much like the woman I remembered that my heart ached.

We went outside to talk.

“I found your email,” I told her.

She froze.

“You did?”

“Sloane deleted it. She also arranged the photographs and created the hotel reservation.”

I showed her the records.

Mallory read the recovered email, her hands trembling.

“I wrote this sitting on the floor of my apartment,” she whispered. “I was terrified, Wesley. I thought I would have to raise our baby alone.”

“I never knew.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“But why didn’t you ever look for me? Even if you thought our marriage was over, why didn’t you ask whether I was okay?”

I had no excuse.

“Because I was stubborn, and I was afraid of hearing something that might prove me wrong.”

Mallory wiped her cheeks.

“Sloane stole our chance to work things out. But you chose not to listen. You need to understand the difference.”

She was right.

I couldn’t blame another person for every mistake I had made.

“I want to be Juniper’s father. I want to show up for her.”

Mallory took a long breath.

“Then start by protecting her. And help me clear my name with the airline.”

That afternoon, I submitted a formal statement.

Another passenger provided a witness account confirming that Sloane had initiated the confrontation.

Two days later, Mallory’s temporary suspension was lifted.

But my most difficult conversation was still ahead.

The Woman Who Admitted Everything

Sloane was waiting in our hotel suite when I returned.

She was examining earrings for our upcoming engagement celebration in Boston.

One hundred eighty guests had been invited.

The venue, flowers, entertainment, and catering had already been arranged.

“We need to talk,” I said.

She sighed.

“If this is about that flight attendant, I’m not apologizing.”

I opened my laptop.

First, I showed her the deleted email records.

Then the original photographs.

Finally, the fabricated reservation.

Her expression changed.

“Where did you get those?”

“Our company’s archived records.”

She looked away.

“You’re invading my privacy.”

“You used company systems to interfere with my marriage and hide information about my child.”

For a moment, she remained silent.

Then she surprised me.

“Fine. I did it.”

I could hardly believe how calmly she admitted it.

“Why?”

“Because Mallory wasn’t right for you. You were building something important, and she was constantly flying around the country.”

“She was my wife.”

“And I was the one working beside you every day!”

I looked at her, stunned.

“You let me believe she had betrayed me.”

Sloane shrugged.

“I thought you deserved someone who understood your future.”

“And what about the email? What about my daughter?”

She folded her arms.

“I thought Mallory was trying to pull you back into that marriage.”

At that moment, I understood that Sloane wasn’t sorry.

She believed she had done me a favor.

“Our engagement is over,” I said. “And your access to company systems will be suspended pending an independent investigation.”

Her face hardened.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’ve never been more serious.”

She reached for her phone.

“Then maybe the guests should hear how you abandoned your fiancée for a flight attendant and a child who suddenly appeared.”

I looked at her quietly.

“The celebration will still take place.”

She smiled.

“I knew you’d reconsider.”

But she misunderstood.

The event would happen.

The engagement would not.

The Night One Hundred Eighty Guests Learned the Truth

The ballroom of a luxury Boston hotel was filled with flowers, crystal chandeliers, and elegantly dressed guests.

Sloane wore an ivory evening gown and greeted everyone with confidence.

At nine o’clock, she stepped onto the stage.

She spoke about our years of working together, our shared ambitions, and the beautiful future she believed awaited us.

Then she handed me the microphone.

“Wesley has something special he’d like to share.”

I looked across the room.

“Yes, I do.”

Behind me, the screen displayed a carefully prepared presentation reviewed by my attorney.

No private information about Mallory or Juniper was included.
