Part 2 of 3

“I opened Lauren’s cabinet with a screwdriver. I found the deed and the girl’s savings book too.”

Then came Eric’s voice.

“Take the money. Lauren watches so many accounts she’ll never notice.”

The contractor slowly closed his folder. “I want no part in this project.”

After he left, Rebecca opened another set of records showing payments for Kayla’s apartment, online wagering, high-interest loans, and several large cash advances. Sadie’s savings had not funded the renovation. The entire amount had covered only the accumulated interest on Eric’s private debt.

“How much do you owe?” I asked.

Eric said nothing.

Rebecca studied the figures. “A little over eighty-two thousand dollars, and his mother is listed as a guarantor.”

Diane turned sharply. “I never signed anything.”

The irony seemed almost too perfect. The woman who had broken into my cabinet to take my documents was now discovering that her son had used hers without permission.

Then the doorbell rang.

Eric’s hands began to shake.

“Don’t answer it.”

A Different Promise for Everyone

The two people outside represented the lending company that had financed Eric’s private loans. They carried contracts, payment notices, and the quiet professionalism of people who had delivered bad news many times before.

They confirmed the amount owed and showed Diane the agreement bearing her information. She insisted that the signature was not hers, and Rebecca immediately requested copies for examination.

While everyone was still talking, another car pulled into the driveway. Kayla came to the door because the card Eric had given her no longer worked.

“You embarrassed me at the leasing office,” she told him. “You promised the rent would be paid this morning.”

Diane moved toward her. “Are you the woman he’s been supporting with our money?”

Kayla stepped back, bewildered. “He told me he was leaving Lauren, selling this house, and buying a condo with me.”

Diane looked at her son. “You told me we were remodeling so we could all live here together.”

Jenna picked up the construction plans. “You promised me the upstairs suite and a walk-in closet. Was any of it true?”

Nothing had been true.

Eric had created a separate future for every person in the room. Diane had been promised comfort and authority in her later years. Jenna had been promised an elegant suite. Kayla had been promised a new home. I had been told that every late meeting and unexplained expense was for our family. Meanwhile, he had used my credit, taken our daughter’s savings, accumulated private debts, and trusted that we would remain too divided to compare his stories.

I unfolded the remodeling plan and studied it carefully. There was a spacious bedroom for Diane, a suite for Jenna, a home office for Eric, a media room, a terrace, and even a guest bedroom.

There was no room for Sadie.

“Where was my daughter supposed to sleep?” I asked.

Diane looked away. “She’s a child. We could have put a sleeper sofa in the family room. She’ll grow up and move out eventually.”

My father had spent thirty-two years repairing heating systems throughout southern Wisconsin. Most mornings he left home before sunrise, and he saved with a patience I did not fully appreciate until I became a parent myself. The money he gave me had covered much of the down payment on that house. Before he was gone, he had asked me to promise him one thing: that Sadie would always know she had a place in the world where she belonged.

Now these people intended to use that same house to build beautiful rooms for themselves while leaving her on a sofa.

“This ends today,” I said.

Rebecca placed the marriage papers and formal financial complaints on the table. Eric tore his copy in half, apparently believing paper could erase what it contained.

“You can’t leave me with nothing,” he said. “We’ve been married nineteen years.”

Diane regained some of her confidence. “And a wife is supposed to help her husband through financial trouble.”

Eric demanded that we discuss everything at the family gathering on Sunday, when his relatives would assemble after church to honor the fifth anniversary of his father’s passing. He believed his uncles, aunts, and cousins would pressure me into remaining silent to protect the family name.

“Fine,” I said. “We’ll discuss it in front of everyone.”

He smiled because he thought I had surrendered.

That afternoon, Rebecca sent the relatives copies of the statements, recordings, loan documents, apartment lease, remodeling plans, and records showing what had happened to Sadie’s savings.

The Family Meeting Eric Requested

The gathering was held in a parish hall outside Sun Prairie. Diane arrived dressed in immaculate black, while Eric greeted relatives with solemn hugs and accepted their sympathy as though the weekend had brought him some fresh burden.

Sadie and I sat near the back.

“Will we have to stay long?” she whispered.

“Only a little while. Then you and I will go somewhere nice for dinner.”

She slipped her hand into mine.

After the first course was served, Eric stood and told the room that I was trying to destroy our family. He described me as cold, ambitious, and obsessed with work, claiming I had neglected my responsibilities and now intended to throw his mother out of the only home where she felt welcome.

Diane pressed a handkerchief to her eyes.

“We only wanted to keep the family together,” she said.

Eric turned toward me. “Tell them you’re willing to abandon your husband over one manageable debt.”

His uncle Thomas opened a large envelope.

“You call eighty-two thousand dollars manageable?”

He spread copies of the loan records across the table.

Eric’s aunt Marjorie held up the apartment lease. “Was this part of keeping the family together too?”

Murmurs moved through the room.

Diane declared that the documents had been fabricated, until Thomas read from the transcript of her recorded conversation.

“This is your voice saying you opened Lauren’s cabinet with a screwdriver.”

Marjorie tapped the remodeling plan. “You planned an enormous bedroom for yourself using the house Lauren bought with help from her father, but your granddaughter was supposed to sleep in the family room?”
