A Quiet Moment With Jessie J
The Royal Variety Performance also brought a surprisingly emotional exchange between Kate and singer Jessie J, who recently revealed her own cancer diagnosis. The musician later spoke to The Independent about the interaction, saying, “Mum to mum, who has just recently gone through cancer, I just wanted to give her a hug.” She added, “We acknowledged that it’s something that is not easy to go through, especially in the public eye.”
Jessie J was diagnosed with early breast cancer in June and underwent surgery soon after. She later announced that the cancer had not spread.
Kate, who went public with her own cancer diagnosis in March 2024, announced she was cancer-free that September. In a statement posted to X, she wrote, “I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus.” She noted, however, that recovery was ongoing: “Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long, and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”

Rebuilding Her “New Normal”
The evening also marked Kate and Prince William’s first red carpet appearance together in two years. Since completing her preventative chemotherapy, Kate has slowly resumed her public duties and has spoken openly about the emotional adjustment that comes after treatment.
In July, she reflected on the challenges of reentering normal life, saying, “You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.” She added that returning to everyday responsibilities takes time: “You’re not necessarily under the clinical team any longer, but you’re not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to.”
