“You were being dramatic,” Celeste replied. “You have been dramatic since the day you brought him home.”

Everett removed his coat and wrapped it around Bennett.

He looked at his mother, then at Audra.

“Why was Maren locked inside that room?”

Audra crossed her arms.

“She tried to ruin the gathering. She was shouting and frightening the staff.”

“She was asking for help.”

Celeste’s face hardened.

“Do not speak to us as though we are strangers. Everything we did was to protect this family.”

Everett did not argue.

He gently placed one arm around Maren and carried Bennett toward the back staircase.

“Where are you going?” Celeste demanded.

Everett looked over his shoulder.

“Somewhere you cannot reach them.”

What the Doctor Revealed

At North Shore Medical Center, Bennett was immediately taken into pediatric care.

Doctors treated him for an infection and dangerously unstable body temperature. Maren was examined in a separate room, where a nurse documented the mark on her face and the condition of her hands.

Everett sat in the hallway between their rooms, unable to think clearly.

After nearly an hour, Dr. Priya Ellison approached him.

Her expression was serious but calm.

“Your son is responding to treatment,” she said. “You brought him in at the right time.”

Everett closed his eyes briefly.

“Will he recover?”

“We expect him to recover fully, but he was exposed to cold air for far too long. Combined with the fever, it placed tremendous stress on his body.”

Everett looked through the glass wall at Bennett’s tiny figure beneath a warming blanket.

“Could the window have opened by accident?”

Dr. Ellison paused.

“A window opening by accident would not explain why the room was closed off or why the baby had been left there without appropriate clothing. I cannot tell you what happened inside your home, but I can tell you the situation was not safe.”

Everett thanked her and walked toward the hospital’s private waiting room.

His fear was being replaced by something colder.

Certainty.

The Cameras Celeste Had Forgotten

Everett had founded a digital security company fifteen years earlier.

After several homes in the neighborhood were burglarized, he installed discreet cameras throughout the residence. The footage was encrypted and automatically saved to a private server.

Celeste knew cameras existed near the exterior doors.

She did not know Everett had recently expanded the system to the hallways, nursery, and shared living spaces.

He opened his laptop.

The first recording showed Audra entering the nursery shortly after six that morning.

She opened the window, moved Bennett’s crib closer to it, and removed the thick blanket Maren had placed over him.

Then she picked up the baby monitor and carried it downstairs.

Twenty minutes later, Maren appeared in the hallway, calling Bennett’s name.

Celeste blocked her from entering the room.

The audio was clear.

“You are not stable enough to care for him,” Celeste said in the recording.

“He needs medicine,” Maren replied. “Please move away from the door.”

“You are embarrassing yourself.”

When Maren tried to pass, Audra grabbed her arm. A struggle followed, and Maren struck the corner of a cabinet before they forced her into the linen room.

Everett stopped the video.

His hands shook, but he continued.

Another recording from Celeste’s private sitting room revealed something even worse.

Celeste was speaking to the family attorney, Roland Voss.

“The evaluation is already prepared,” she said. “Dr. Halpern will state that Maren is suffering from a severe emotional condition following childbirth.”

Roland’s voice came through the speaker.

“Everett will need to approve temporary guardianship.”

“He will,” Celeste answered confidently. “Once he sees the child in the hospital and Maren in distress, he will believe she caused everything. Then I will manage Bennett’s trust until Everett is thinking clearly again.”

Everett leaned back in his chair.

His grandfather had left a family trust worth more than thirty million dollars. Bennett’s birth had activated a new section of the agreement, placing a significant portion under Everett’s control for his son’s future.

Celeste had not been protecting the family.

She had been trying to control its money.

Everett Pretended to Break

Everett contacted Maren’s cousin, Blake Mercer, a senior administrator at the hospital. He also called his corporate attorney, Sloane Avery, and quietly sent the recordings to local investigators.

Then he waited.

Celeste and Audra arrived at the hospital shortly after nine that evening.

Celeste carried flowers. Audra carried a leather folder.

Everett met them outside Bennett’s room, lowering his shoulders and allowing exhaustion to show on his face.

Celeste touched his arm.

“My poor boy. You look terrible.”

Everett stared at the floor.

“The doctor said Bennett was exposed to cold air.”

Audra immediately spoke.

“Maren must have opened the window. She hasn’t been herself.”

Everett looked toward his wife’s room.

“Maybe you were right about her.”

Celeste exchanged a quick glance with Audra.

“We never wanted to be right,” Celeste said softly. “We only want to protect you.”

Audra handed Everett the folder.

“These papers allow Mom to supervise Bennett’s medical decisions temporarily. They also let her manage the trust while you focus on the company.”

Everett turned the pages slowly.

“And Maren?”

Celeste’s voice became gentle.

“A private care team can take her somewhere peaceful tonight. No public attention. No uncomfortable questions.”

Everett pretended to consider the offer.

Then he signed the final page using a pen Sloane had prepared for him.

The ink would disappear when exposed to sustained warmth.

Celeste placed the documents inside her heated leather handbag.

“You made the responsible choice,” she whispered.
