“Can we prove I did not authorize this?”
“Yes,” Malcolm said. “The digital records lead directly to Colin’s office. We also have copies of emails in which he discussed shifting responsibility away from himself.”
I thought about every late night I had spent helping him.
I remembered signing stacks of routine forms while preparing dinner, checking homework, and answering work emails.
Colin had not mistaken my trust for weakness.
He had deliberately used it.
“I inherited everything today,” I told Malcolm. “The trust, the building in Manhattan, the investments, and the house.”
He nodded.
“The inheritance is protected. Colin has no legal claim to it.”
Relief moved through me, followed by determination.
“He and Sloane are hosting a celebration at the house on Saturday,” I said. “They invited investors, clients, and half the neighborhood.”
Malcolm studied my face.
“What are you planning?”
“I am going home.”
The Party They Believed Was Their Beginning
Saturday evening, lights covered the trees in my backyard.
Music drifted across the lawn while expensive cars lined the street.
Colin had invited everyone he wanted to impress. He was presenting Sloane as his new partner in life and in business. He wanted the evening to announce that his most successful years were about to begin.
I arrived wearing a simple navy dress and my great-aunt’s pearl necklace.
Malcolm walked beside me carrying the ownership documents and official notices. Two licensed security professionals followed several steps behind us.
When I opened the front door, the room became silent.
Colin stood beside the fireplace holding a glass of sparkling water. Sloane was next to him, smiling for a group of potential investors.
The smile vanished when she saw me.
“Audrey?” Colin said. “What are you doing here?”
“I came home.”
Sloane stepped forward.
“You cannot simply walk in here. Colin asked you to leave.”
I looked around the room.
“Colin does not have the authority to remove me from this property.”
He laughed nervously.
“This is my house.”
Malcolm opened his briefcase.
“Actually, Mr. Dorsey, the property is owned by the Bellamy Family Trust. Mrs. Dorsey became the sole controlling beneficiary earlier this week.”
He placed the deed on the table.
Colin picked it up and read the first page.
His face slowly lost its color.
“This cannot be right.”
“It is entirely correct,” I said. “Great-Aunt Florence purchased this house years ago. She wanted to make sure I would always have a secure home.”
Sloane looked from Colin to the document.
“You told me this house was one of your biggest assets.”
Colin ignored her.
“Audrey, we should discuss this privately.”
“You did not give me privacy when you placed my suitcases on the porch in front of our children.”
Several guests began whispering.
Colin lowered his voice.
“Do not embarrass me in front of my investors.”
I met his eyes.
“You should have considered that before using my name to secure millions of dollars in business debt.”
The room fell completely silent.
Everything He Built Began to Fall Apart
One of Colin’s largest prospective investors stepped forward.
“What debt is she talking about?”
Colin forced a smile.
“This is a misunderstanding caused by a difficult separation.”
Malcolm calmly removed another folder from his briefcase.
“Independent specialists have confirmed that Mrs. Dorsey’s signature was copied onto multiple documents without her authorization. Relevant institutions have already been notified.”
The investor looked at Colin for several seconds.
Then he placed his drink on a table.
“Our discussions are over.”
He walked toward the door.
Others followed.
Within minutes, the room that had been filled with laughter was nearly empty.
Sloane turned on Colin.
“You told me the company was about to receive major funding.”
“It would have if she had stayed out of this!” he snapped.
I watched them blame each other for decisions they had made together.
Malcolm handed Colin an official notice.
“You have a limited amount of time to collect your personal belongings. After that, the security code will be changed.”
Colin looked at me with disbelief.
“You are throwing me out?”
“No,” I replied. “I am reclaiming the home you tried to take from me.”
Sloane quietly removed my silk scarf from around her neck and placed it on a chair.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
“He told me you had never contributed anything,” she said.
I folded the scarf and placed it in my handbag.
“You believed the version of me that made it easier to take my place.”
An Unexpected Offer
The next morning, Sloane contacted Malcolm and requested a private meeting.
I agreed to meet her in a quiet café near Grand Central Terminal.
She arrived without her usual confidence. She placed a small encrypted drive on the table.
“Colin kept copies of everything,” she said. “Emails, account records, original contracts, and messages with the people who helped him create the second company.”
I looked at the drive but did not touch it.
“Why are you giving this to me?”
“Because he lied to both of us.”
“You helped him remove me from my home.”
She looked away.
