Part 2 of 3

“Before you decide who is leaving, you might want to read this.”

Derek looked annoyed.

Then his eyes moved across the first page.

His expression changed.

He read the page again.

“Where did you get this?”

“From Eleanor’s attorney.”

“This doesn’t make sense.”

Vanessa moved beside him.

“What is it?”

Derek did not answer.

Natalie did.

“The deed.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Natalie continued calmly.

“This house was purchased by my great-aunt before Derek and I were married. It was held in a family trust, and ownership transferred to me today.”

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the document.

“You told me you bought this house.”

Derek’s face hardened.

“There are complicated family arrangements you don’t understand.”

Natalie almost smiled again.

“Apparently there are family arrangements you didn’t understand either.”

“Natalie, don’t turn this into some performance.”

“I’m not performing. I’m correcting the story.”

A dark sedan stopped near the curb.

A silver-haired man stepped out carrying a leather portfolio. Two professional property representatives followed him.

Derek stared at them.

The attorney approached Natalie.

“Mrs. Brenner, I hope we are not too late.”

“You’re right on time, Mr. Keating.”

Derek looked between them.

“Why is your attorney here?”

Martin Keating remained polite.

“Mrs. Brenner asked that the property be documented immediately after ownership transferred. Considering the circumstances, that appears to have been a wise decision.”

Vanessa slowly turned toward Derek.

“You said she would leave with nothing.”

Derek remained silent.

Natalie looked at him and realized silence had become the most truthful thing he offered all afternoon.

My Son Asked the Question Derek Couldn’t Answer

Owen tugged gently at Natalie’s coat.

“Mom, are we going somewhere else tonight?”

Natalie crouched until they were eye level.

“No, buddy.”

“But Dad packed your bags.”

“I know.”

“So where are we sleeping?”

Natalie kissed his forehead.

“Right here. This is our home.”

Owen looked toward Derek.

“Then why did Dad say you had to leave?”

Derek’s shoulders stiffened.

“I didn’t explain everything correctly.”

Chloe stared at him.

“You put Mom’s clothes outside. What part needed explaining?”

Natalie almost told Chloe not to speak that way to her father.

Then she stopped herself.

Her daughter was not being disrespectful.

She was describing what she had seen.

Mr. Keating opened the front door using a key provided through the trust documents.

The simple click of the lock seemed louder than it should have.

For eleven years, Derek had behaved as though this house represented his success.

Now another person had opened the door for Natalie.

Mr. Keating looked toward the children.

“Why don’t you two go inside and get warm?”

Owen looked at Natalie.

“You’re coming too?”

“In a minute.”

Chloe hugged her mother before taking Owen inside.

When the door closed, Derek’s voice became quieter.

“Natalie, we should talk without an audience.”

She looked at the luggage beside him.

“You packed my life into two suitcases before I arrived. Privacy didn’t seem important then.”

Then He Suddenly Remembered He Loved Me

Derek stepped closer.

The anger disappeared from his face.

His voice softened.

Natalie recognized the change immediately.

“This has gotten out of control.”

“Has it?”

“I made a terrible decision.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Excuse me?”

Derek ignored her.

“Natalie, we’ve been together fourteen years. We have two children. People make mistakes.”

Natalie studied his face.

Less than twenty minutes earlier, he had been prepared to send her away with two suitcases.

Now he knew about the house.

But he did not yet know everything.

He did not know about the investment portfolio.

He did not know about the commercial property.

He certainly did not know the total value of Eleanor’s estate.

Natalie decided not to tell him.

“I was coming home to surprise you,” she said.

Derek’s eyes immediately brightened.

“Then maybe this doesn’t have to end.”

Natalie shook her head.

“I was coming home believing we still had something worth saving.”

His expression changed.

“And now?”

Natalie looked at her luggage.

“Then I saw those.”

Vanessa let out a short, bitter laugh.

“Amazing. Five minutes ago, you were planning our future. Now you want your marriage back.”

Derek finally looked at her.

“Vanessa, this isn’t the time.”

“It became the time when you asked me to bring half my wardrobe here.”

Natalie noticed the bracelet again.

She pointed toward Vanessa’s wrist.

“That belongs to my family.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Derek gave it to me.”

“It belonged to my grandmother. Eleanor gave it to me after she passed.”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

She immediately unclasped it.

“I didn’t know.”

Mr. Keating took out a small evidence envelope.

“I can document the return.”

Derek groaned.

“This is ridiculous.”

Natalie looked at him.

“No. What’s ridiculous is how many things you gave away because you assumed I would never question you.”

He Was the One Who Had to Leave

Mr. Keating closed his portfolio.

“Mr. Brenner, Mrs. Brenner has requested that you stay elsewhere while the legal situation is reviewed.”

Derek stared at Natalie.

“You’re throwing me out?”

Natalie shook her head.

“I’m stopping you from throwing me out.”

“I have lived here for eleven years.”

“So have I.”

“This is my children’s home.”

“Exactly.”

Derek lowered his voice.

“You have no idea what Eleanor involved you in.”

Natalie paused.

That sentence felt different.

Not angry.

Almost like a warning.
