I Was 67, and I Had Paid $9,600 for Their Entire Caribbean Vacation. I Didn’t Argue or Beg. I Simply Took My Suitcase Home and Made Three Quiet Decisions. Seven Days Later, My Son Returned to Find His Key Useless, His Car Gone, and His Mother Missing. But When Our Neighbor Mentioned the Woman Who Had Come Looking for Him, His Wife Dropped Her Shopping Bag

Part 2 of 3

According to Judith, Mallory looked as though the ground had shifted beneath her.

When I returned, Judith told me about the conversation.

Suddenly, the receipts made sense.

The monthly withdrawals.

The beauty supplies.

The mysterious business expenses.

My son hadn’t been helping his wife through a medical emergency.

He had been using my retirement income to support another woman’s business while telling that woman he was single.

I called Brianna’s father, Franklin, and carefully explained what I had discovered.

He sounded genuinely shocked.

“Lorraine, Preston told us he paid for the vacation with a performance bonus. Brianna said you decided not to travel because you weren’t feeling well.”

“I paid for the entire trip, Franklin. They took my ticket away at the airport.”

There was a long silence.

“Send me whatever documents you have. When they come home, we’re going to have a serious conversation.”

For the first time, I felt that someone was willing to listen without automatically defending Preston.

The Decision That Took My Son by Surprise

The next morning, I met with an attorney named Rebecca Sloan.

She reviewed the account statements, travel confirmations, and messages from Preston.

Rebecca explained that recovering money voluntarily given to a family member could be complicated, particularly when I had authorized access to my account.

However, the records could support a civil claim or a negotiated repayment agreement.

“The most important thing,” she told me, “is protecting what you still own.”

I left her office determined to do exactly that.

That afternoon, a young man called asking for the title to my silver Toyota Camry.

He said Preston had instructed him to collect the paperwork.

The car was registered entirely in my name.

I had allowed Preston to drive it regularly because he worked at a car dealership and complained about needing reliable transportation.

But he had no authority to sell it or use it as collateral.

I told the caller not to come.

Then I contacted a reputable local dealership.

After inspecting the vehicle and reviewing the ownership documents, they offered me $13,800.

I accepted.

The money went directly into my new account.

When Judith watched the car leave my driveway, she shook her head.

“Preston is going to have quite a surprise when he comes back.”

“Then he’ll have to buy a car with his own paycheck.”

We both laughed.

That evening, I opened my laptop and searched for beach vacations.

I found a lovely beachfront hotel in Key West, with a balcony overlooking the water.

I booked six nights under my own name.

Before leaving, I handed Judith a spare key.

“Would you mind looking after my plants?”

She grinned.

“Of course. But this time, you’re actually going somewhere.”

The Day My Son Came Home

Preston, Brianna, and Denise returned the following Saturday.

They arrived at my house carrying shopping bags, souvenirs, and expensive-looking sunglasses.

The first thing Preston noticed was the empty driveway.

He called me twice.

I didn’t answer because I was enjoying breakfast beside the ocean.

Then he walked to my front door.

His key wouldn’t turn.

He tried again, growing increasingly frustrated.

Judith heard the commotion and stepped outside.

“Looking for your mother?”

“Judith, why doesn’t my key work? And where’s the Camry?”

“Lorraine changed the locks. She sold her car, too.”

Preston stared at her.

“She sold my car?”

“It was registered in her name, Preston.”

Brianna folded her arms.

“Where is Lorraine, anyway?”

Judith smiled.

“Key West. She’s finally enjoying the beach vacation she wanted.”

Preston looked stunned.

Then Judith remembered Mallory’s visit.

“Oh, Preston, a woman named Mallory came looking for you. She said you owe rent on a beauty studio. She also seemed to believe you were divorced.”

Brianna’s shopping bag slipped from her hand.

“Who is Mallory?”

Preston’s expression changed immediately.

“She’s just someone I know through work.”

“Then why does she think you’re divorced?”

Judith quietly returned inside, leaving them to have the conversation without an audience.

A few minutes later, my phone rang.

It was Judith.

“Lorraine, I think your son is having a very difficult afternoon.”

I looked across the water.

“I’m sorry it’s come to this, Judith. But I’m not going to keep paying for his decisions.”

The Vacation That Ended a Marriage

Later that evening, Franklin called.

Brianna had returned to her parents’ home in tears.

He had confronted her with the original travel itinerary and the bank records I had shared.

At first, she insisted Preston had paid for everything.

Then Franklin showed her the confirmation bearing my name.

He explained that I had contributed $9,600 toward a vacation from which I had been deliberately excluded.

Denise admitted she had known I was being replaced, although she claimed she believed I had agreed to the change.

Franklin was furious.

“You watched Lorraine standing at that airport with her suitcase, and nobody thought to ask whether she wanted to go home?”

Denise had no answer.

When Franklin mentioned the withdrawals supposedly intended for Brianna’s medical expenses, she became visibly upset.

“I never had any surgery. Preston never told me his mother was paying medical bills.”

Then came the information about Mallory.

Brianna remembered Preston mentioning a woman who wanted to open a beauty studio.

He had described her as a potential business partner.

Now she understood why he had been so interested in the business.

By the end of the evening, Brianna told Preston she wanted a divorce.

The condominium where they lived had been inherited from her grandmother and belonged to Brianna.

She asked him to move out.

Preston suddenly found himself without his marriage, without the car he had been driving, and without access to my bank account.

Meanwhile, I was sitting on a beach in Key West wearing my navy-blue swimsuit.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t worrying about whether Preston needed something.

I was simply enjoying the ocean.

The Apology That Came With Another Request

When I returned home, Preston appeared at my door.

He looked tired and carried a small backpack.

“Mom, I’m sorry about the airport.”

I opened the door only halfway.

“I’m listening.”

He explained that Brianna had asked him to leave and that his credit card balance had grown to nearly $8,000.

He was renting a room and struggling to make payments.

Then he asked whether I could lend him $5,000.

I looked at him for a long moment.
