The Millionaire Was My Long-Lost Ex-Boyfriend—and Possibly My Daughter’s Father. But Why Had He Disappeared Without a Word, and What Was His Family Hiding From Me?

Part 2 of 3

Blake entered with Dana.

And the look on his face told me the conversation was about to become much worse.

The Missing Watch and the Convenient Accusation

Blake placed a small velvet box on Patricia’s desk.

“Mother, Wesley’s gold watch is missing.”

Dana stepped forward holding my canvas tote bag.

“We found it among Holly’s belongings.”

She opened the bag.

Inside, beneath Maisie’s spare sweater, was an expensive watch I had never seen before.

I stared at it in disbelief.

“That isn’t mine. Someone put it there.”

Blake folded his arms.

“First your daughter enters a restricted room, and now a valuable watch turns up in your bag. That’s quite a coincidence.”

I felt my face grow hot.

“I haven’t taken anything from this family.”

He leaned toward me.

“Then perhaps you’d prefer to explain everything to the authorities.”

Patricia raised her hand.

“Enough. I want the security footage reviewed before anyone makes another accusation.”

Blake quickly replied that the cameras had been undergoing maintenance.

That was when I realized something was wrong.

I remembered the conversations about company documents.

I remembered Dana’s irritation whenever the doctors discussed Wesley’s recovery.

And I remembered how frightened Blake had looked when Patricia mentioned that her son might be improving.

I left the office and found Everett Shaw, the estate’s longtime security director.

“Someone entered my apartment and put that watch in my bag,” I told him. “Please preserve whatever camera footage you have.”

Everett listened carefully.

“The estate has a separate backup system. I’ll make sure nothing is erased.”

Mrs. Pritchard also remembered seeing Dana near the staff apartment earlier that morning.

With Patricia’s permission, Everett reviewed the recordings.

One camera showed Dana entering my apartment while I was working.

Another showed Blake handing her a small wrapped object.

The footage did not reveal everything, but it contradicted their explanation.

Patricia watched in silence.

Then she made two calls.

The first was to the family’s attorney.

The second was to an independent neurologist.

The Secret Hidden in Wesley’s Medical Records

By that evening, the independent physician had reviewed Wesley’s recent treatment records.

Several medication entries did not match the instructions documented by his treating doctors.

There were also inconsistencies involving sedatives administered during periods when physicians had recommended reducing them for neurological assessment.

The specialist was careful not to draw conclusions before a full investigation.

But Patricia was visibly shaken.

“Could these medications have affected his ability to respond?” she asked.

“It’s possible,” the physician replied. “We need a complete review before determining what happened.”

Blake arrived shortly afterward and insisted that the family was overreacting.

“Wesley has excellent medical care. You’re letting a housekeeper create problems where none exist.”

Patricia turned toward him.

“This isn’t about Holly anymore. It’s about your brother.”

For the first time, Blake seemed genuinely nervous.

Later that evening, he asked me to come to his office.

When I arrived, Maisie was sitting beside his desk with a coloring book. Dana had brought her there from the kitchen without asking my permission.

I immediately took my daughter’s hand.

“Maisie, we’re leaving.”

Blake stepped forward, holding several documents.

“Not until we settle this misunderstanding.”

He wanted me to sign a resignation letter, acknowledge responsibility for the missing watch, and agree not to discuss my relationship with Wesley.

I refused.

“I’m not signing something that isn’t true.”

His expression hardened.

“You have no idea how complicated this family is, Holly.”

“Then stop making my daughter part of those complications.”

At that moment, Patricia entered with Everett and the attorney.

She had already reviewed the security footage.

“Blake, put those papers away,” she said.

He tried to argue, but she interrupted him.

“I’ve also learned that Wesley requested an internal audit shortly before his accident. An audit involving accounts you were responsible for.”

Blake went pale.

Suddenly, his interest in Wesley’s condition made terrible sense.

The Brother Who Had Too Much to Lose

Wesley had been preparing to investigate unusual transfers from one of the Ashford family’s transportation businesses.

The preliminary records suggested that Blake had authorized transactions that required additional explanation.

While Wesley remained unable to manage the company, Blake had attempted to expand his authority through corporate documents and board decisions.

Patricia’s attorney had already begun reviewing those actions.

The medical investigation uncovered another troubling connection.

Payments from a company associated with Blake had reached an account linked to Dana.

Investigators would later examine whether those transfers were related to the irregularities in Wesley’s care.

Blake insisted the payments were legitimate consulting expenses.

But the explanations kept changing.

Patricia arranged for Wesley to return to a specialized hospital for independent evaluation.

The medical team gradually adjusted his treatment under close supervision.

Over the following days, he began responding more consistently.

First, he followed simple instructions.

Then he opened his eyes for longer periods.

Eventually, he could communicate a few words.

I wasn’t present for every milestone.

Maisie and I had moved out of the mansion and were staying with my cousin.

I wanted distance from the Ashford family’s problems.

The authorities were reviewing the security recordings, financial records, and concerns raised about Wesley’s medical care.

Blake and Dana became subjects of formal investigations, and their roles were restricted while the relevant evidence was examined.

But none of that changed the question that mattered most to me.

Was Wesley really Maisie’s father?

The Conversation I Had Waited Four Years to Have

Two weeks after we left the mansion, Patricia called.

“Wesley has been asking about you,” she said.

I stood in my cousin’s kitchen, staring at the rain against the window.

“Does he remember me?”

“Yes. And he wants to explain what happened.”

I agreed to visit him alone.

When I entered the hospital’s family consultation room, Wesley was sitting in a wheelchair beside the window.

He looked thinner than the man I remembered.

His voice was weak.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

“Holly,” he said.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I had carried for four years.

“Why didn’t you come back?”

Wesley looked down.

“There were serious problems involving the family business. Someone had been pressuring people close to me, and I thought leaving Portland would keep you away from it.”
