Part 2 of 3

He looked away.

When we returned home, Rachel was waiting in our sitting room. She had asked to speak with us privately while Sadie played with my mother in the kitchen.

Rachel held a small leather notebook against her chest.

“I think I know what that key is for,” she said.

The notebook had belonged to her father, Martin Ward, who had worked as an internal auditor for Callahan Enterprises before disappearing seven years earlier. His case had never been resolved, and Rachel had spent years trying to understand what happened.

She opened the notebook to a page filled with dates and account references.

“My father wrote about duplicate financial records. He said he’d put them somewhere nobody would think to look.”

Russell studied the handwriting.

“Martin told me he was investigating discrepancies before he disappeared.”

Rachel stared at him.

“You knew?”

“He came to me with concerns about Leonard. I told him we’d review them, but he disappeared before he could provide the supporting documents.”

“And you never told me?”

Russell lowered his eyes.

“He asked me not to involve you until he understood what was happening.”

Rachel looked devastated.

“I’ve spent seven years thinking he abandoned us. You could’ve told me he was trying to protect something.”

Before Russell could answer, my mother entered carrying a tray of tea. She stopped when she saw the key on the coffee table.

“Paige,” she said slowly, “where did you get that?”

I looked up.

“From the property Russell bought. Why?”

She set down the tray and reached for her glasses.

“Your father had one just like it.”

My father had died twenty years earlier in a car accident. He’d worked as an attorney, but I’d never known him to have any connection to Rachel’s family.

“Mom, what are you saying?”

She looked from the key to Russell.

“Your father worked for Walter Callahan before you were born. He left after discovering financial records he believed had been altered. I thought he’d put all that behind him.”

“What happened to his key?”

She hesitated.

“I kept it with his old papers. It’s in the box upstairs.”

When she returned, she was holding a small envelope. Inside was a nearly identical brass key, marked with the same three numbers.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Two men, separated by thirteen years, had apparently been investigating the same family company. Both had possessed keys bearing the number 314.

And one of those keys had been hidden inside the property my husband had just purchased from Leonard Callahan.

PART 2 — THE RECORDS

What My Father Left Behind

I barely slept that night. Our baby woke twice for feeding, and each time I sat in the nursery thinking about the keys lying in a locked drawer downstairs. My father had been gone for twenty years. I remembered his laugh, the way he folded the newspaper into perfect quarters, and how he always checked the front door twice before bed.

I didn’t remember him ever mentioning Leonard Callahan.

The next morning, I asked my mother to tell me everything she knew.

She sat beside me at the kitchen table while I fed the baby.

“Your father was hired to review several contracts involving Callahan Enterprises,” she explained. “He found payments that didn’t match the supporting invoices. When he asked questions, Leonard told him to stop interfering.”

“Did Dad report it?”

“He tried to get more records first. Then somebody entered his office while he was away and took several files.”

My mother folded her hands.

“After that, he resigned. He told me he’d kept copies somewhere safe, but he never said where.”

“And the key?”

“He asked me to keep it. After the accident, I couldn’t bring myself to throw anything away.”

I looked down at my sleeping son. For years, I’d believed my father’s unfinished work was simply part of the past. Now it seemed connected to a house my husband had purchased only weeks earlier.

Russell joined us with his phone in his hand.

“Walter’s legal team found something,” he said. “The carriage house was used as an off-site records archive in the nineties. Some storage compartments were built into the foundation.”

“Then we need to have them examined,” I replied.

“I’ve already arranged it.”

I looked at him.

“Russell.”

He stopped.

“I’m not asking you to solve this without me. I’m asking you to stop making decisions and telling me afterward.”

He put down his phone.

“You’re right. The consultant can meet both of us there at noon.”

It was a small change, but after weeks of secrecy, it mattered.

The Cabinet in the Carriage House

At noon, we returned to Wayzata with a company attorney and a security consultant. Rachel joined us because her father’s notebook might help identify the records.

The consultant examined the storage area and found a metal cabinet built into the rear wall. Its keyway was partly concealed beneath a sliding cover.

One of the brass keys fit.

The cabinet opened with considerable effort, revealing several sealed document boxes and a small fire-resistant case.

We didn’t begin pulling papers out at random. The attorney photographed the contents, documented their condition, and arranged for the materials to be preserved and reviewed.

Inside the first box were old company ledgers, payment records, and correspondence bearing my father’s initials. Another contained documents dated years later, including copies of reports prepared by Martin Ward.

Rachel stared at the labels.

“That’s my dad’s handwriting.”

She sat on a wooden stool while the attorney examined the first pages.

“He really was investigating something,” she whispered.

Russell stood beside her.

“Rachel, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what I knew.”

She shook her head.

“I spent years wondering whether he left because he didn’t want us anymore.”

“He didn’t tell me where he was going,” Russell replied. “But he was worried about you. I remember that clearly.”

Rachel wiped her eyes.

The attorney eventually located a letter addressed to Walter Callahan. It was signed by my father and described suspected misuse of company funds through several related businesses.

Northstar Premier Assets was among the names.

I read the letter twice.

My father hadn’t been investigating some vague disagreement over accounting. He’d identified transactions connected to the very company that had sold Russell the mansion.

“Leonard knew about these records,” I said.

The attorney looked up.

“We don’t know that yet. But this is enough to warrant an independent forensic review and referral to the appropriate authorities.”

Russell nodded.

“Do it.”

For once, he didn’t look at me for approval after making the decision. Instead, he asked whether I agreed with the proposed next steps.

“Yes,” I said. “And I want copies of everything we’re legally entitled to receive.”

The Story That Appeared Online

By the following afternoon, photographs of Russell and Rachel were circulating online. An anonymous source had supplied a local business publication with the property deed and suggested that Russell had secretly purchased a mansion for a woman he was seeing outside his marriage.

The article didn’t mention Leonard, the old financial records, or the investigation that had just begun.

It showed Rachel standing beside Russell outside the office, holding Sadie’s backpack.

I recognized the photograph. It had been taken after a company family event months earlier.

Russell called me from work.

“Paige, have you seen what’s being posted?”

“Yes.”

“The board wants an explanation.”

“Then give them the facts you can substantiate. Don’t invent a story to make yourself look better.”

He was quiet.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“You told me the house was a charitable favor. Then you said it was a security measure. Now we know it came from Leonard’s company. You need to be precise about what you knew at each stage.”

Russell sighed.

“You’re right.”

The company retained independent counsel to review the purchase and the historical records. Russell disclosed his role in the transaction and stepped away from decisions involving the investigation.

Walter also contacted the appropriate authorities about the documents discovered in the carriage house.

Rachel’s situation required separate attention. Her former husband had continued contacting her despite repeated requests to stop, and the publicity made her worried about Sadie’s privacy.

I helped her find a family attorney who could advise her about protective measures and housing arrangements. We also arranged a temporary apartment through a legitimate assistance program rather than leaving her dependent on another private arrangement with Russell.

One evening, Rachel came to our house to collect a bag of Sadie’s belongings.

“I know people think something happened between Russell and me,” she said.

I folded a small yellow sweater and placed it in the bag.
