But When My Attorney Arrived, She Uncovered a Secret My Husband and His Mother Had Been Hiding Since I Was in the Hospital

Part 2 of 3

“Because I need to understand what’s happening in my own home.”

Lorraine laughed dismissively.

“You’re bringing lawyers into a family disagreement over dinner?”

Natalie didn’t respond to the insult.

She asked to speak with me privately, and I showed her the messages and documents Bennett had recently requested.

Then I told him and Lorraine that I wanted them to stay elsewhere while I considered my next steps.

Bennett argued that it was his home too.

Natalie explained that marital residence and ownership rights could involve different legal considerations, and that nobody would be removed without following the proper process.

I made it clear that I wasn’t comfortable continuing the evening together.

After a tense conversation, Bennett agreed to spend the night with a coworker.

Lorraine called her sister.

They began packing a few bags.

Then Natalie received an email from a title attorney she had contacted earlier that evening about a concern I had mentioned.

She read it carefully.

Her expression changed.

The Papers I Never Signed

Natalie turned her laptop toward me.

“Claire, there appears to have been an attempt to prepare a deed transferring your property to Lorraine.”

I stared at the screen.

A copy of a proposed quitclaim deed showed my name as the person transferring ownership.

Lorraine was listed as the recipient.

At the bottom was a signature that resembled mine.

But I had never signed it.

The document was dated during my hospital stay.

“This isn’t my signature,” I whispered.

Natalie nodded.

“The document has not been recorded as a valid transfer. There are also questions about the signature and notarization. We’ll need the title attorney to investigate how it was prepared.”

I turned toward Bennett.

He had stopped packing.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Claire, it’s not what you think.”

“Then tell me why my name is on paperwork I never approved.”

He glanced at Lorraine.

She looked down at her suitcase.

Natalie explained that an unrecorded, questionable document did not automatically change ownership. She would help me take steps to protect the property and have the circumstances reviewed.

I looked at Bennett again.

“Were you trying to give my house to your mother?”

He didn’t answer.

And his silence frightened me more than any explanation could have.

The Fifteen Thousand Dollars I Didn’t Know Was Missing

After Bennett and Lorraine left voluntarily, Natalie stayed long enough to help me organize the documents.

Then I remembered something else.

Bennett had repeatedly told me that our banking app was experiencing problems.

He had offered to handle household payments while I recovered.

I opened my personal savings account.

Before Maisie’s birth, I had approximately $24,000 saved.

Now there was barely $9,000.

I checked the transaction history.

Five days earlier, someone had transferred $15,000 to Lorraine.

My hands began trembling.

Bennett knew my phone passcode and had access to my banking information because I had trusted him to help with expenses.

I called the bank immediately, reported the transaction as unauthorized, and requested that my digital access be secured.

The representative explained that the transfer would need to be investigated.

There was no guarantee that the money would be returned immediately.

I saved the transaction details and sent a copy to Natalie.

Then I checked my messages.

My mother had been trying to contact me.

Several messages were marked as read even though I hadn’t opened them.

One message said:

“Claire, Bennett told me you’re thinking about staying with me for a few months. Why haven’t we talked about this?”

I called her.

The Story My Husband Had Invented

My mother, Elaine, lived in Greensboro.

When she answered, she sounded relieved.

“Honey, I’ve been worried. Bennett said you were having a difficult time adjusting and needed some space.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Mom, I never told him that.”

She explained that Bennett had contacted her before Maisie was born.

He claimed our marriage was struggling and suggested I might want to stay with her during my recovery.

He even asked whether she could accommodate me for several months.

“I told him you were always welcome,” she said. “But I thought it was strange that you hadn’t mentioned anything.”

Then she revealed another detail.

Lorraine had fallen behind on rent at her apartment.

Her landlord had begun the legal process to recover possession, and she needed somewhere else to live.

Bennett had asked my mother not to tell me.

Suddenly, the strange conversations, the paperwork, and the missing money all connected.

Bennett wanted me to believe I needed to leave my home temporarily.

Meanwhile, he was attempting to arrange ownership documents benefiting his mother.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Bennett appeared.

“You need to stop making this bigger than it is. If you start a legal fight, I’ll ask for custody of Maisie. I’ll tell them you haven’t been well enough to manage things since the delivery.”

I saved the message.

For the first time, I understood how far he was willing to go to protect his secrets.

The Truth Behind My Husband’s Business

The following morning, my mother arrived with groceries and a small suitcase.

When she saw me, she immediately embraced me.

“You don’t have to handle this alone anymore,” she whispered.

Over the next several days, I attended a medical follow-up and met with a family-law attorney recommended by Natalie.

We discussed separation, parenting arrangements, and how to document Bennett’s messages.

Natalie continued working with the title attorney on the property issue and helped me find appropriate advice about the banking transaction.

A week later, Bennett requested a meeting.

I agreed to attend with legal counsel.

Lorraine accompanied him.

We met in a conference room at Natalie’s office.

Bennett looked exhausted.
