Just 48 Hours After Emergency Surgery Saved My Life, My Mother-in-Law Threw a Cast-Iron Skillet at My Head Because I Refused to Cook Lunch. It Struck the Doorframe Inches From My Face While My Sister-in-Law Shouted, “Look What You Made Mom Do!” I Clutched My Surgical Incision, Barely Able to Stand. Neither of Them Noticed My Husband Had Returned Early From Tokyo—Until His Voice Came From Behind Me: “Mother. Don’t Move.” What He Had Already Done Made Her Face Go Pale

Part 2 of 3

Preston helped me sit down while we waited for emergency responders.

“Natalie, are you hurt? Is your incision okay?”

“The skillet missed me, but I hit the table trying to move away.”

He knelt beside me.

“I’m so sorry. I should have been here.”

Lorraine interrupted.

“You’re seriously calling emergency services because of a family argument?”

Preston stood.

“You threw a heavy pan toward someone recovering from surgery. This isn’t an ordinary argument.”

When officers arrived, Lorraine insisted the skillet had accidentally slipped from her hand.

Paige supported her story.

Then Preston remembered the indoor security camera mounted above the hallway entrance.

We had installed it after several missing deliveries and concerns about people entering through the back door. Its wide-angle view included part of our open kitchen.

Preston showed the recording to the officers.

There was Lorraine, lifting the skillet and throwing it toward me.

There was Paige, blaming me immediately afterward.

Lorraine’s expression changed.

“Preston, please. I’m your mother.”

He looked exhausted.

“And Natalie is my wife. She needed help, and you treated her like she didn’t matter.”

The officers took statements and continued their investigation.

Paramedics recommended that I return to the hospital for evaluation.

Fortunately, the examination showed no new surgical complication, although my doctor emphasized that I needed proper rest.

Preston arranged a furnished apartment near the hospital.

He offered to stay.

I refused.

“You can help me recover, Preston. But I need space to decide whether I can trust you again.”

He accepted my answer.

I could see that he finally understood how serious things had become.

But I was about to discover that the skillet wasn’t the only thing his family had been hiding.

Part 5: A Letter From the Bank

Four days later, I received a notification from our mortgage lender.

It concerned an application for a home equity line of credit, commonly called a HELOC.

The proposed credit limit was $185,000.

I had never applied for it.

At first, I assumed there had been a mistake.

Then I opened the attached documents.

My name appeared beside a signature I didn’t recognize.

The application listed our home as collateral.

And the stated purpose involved purchasing another residential property.

I immediately called the lender’s fraud department.

A representative explained that the application had been flagged during verification and no funds had been released.

I requested copies of the documents and asked that the application remain blocked while the signatures were investigated.

Then I contacted a Raleigh real estate attorney named Meredith Sloan.

She reviewed the paperwork and explained that someone appeared to have attempted to use our home to secure financing without my authorization.

“Natalie, don’t confront anyone until we’ve preserved the records. We need to establish who submitted these documents.”

I followed her advice.

But that evening, Paige called Preston.

I was sitting nearby when he answered.

“Why is Natalie making such a big deal about the bank?” Paige demanded.

Preston put the call on speaker.

“What do you know about the application?”

“Nothing. Mom was just trying to help me get a condo.”

He looked at me.

“What does our house have to do with your condo?”

There was a long silence.

Then Paige began crying.

“Mom said the paperwork was temporary. She told me Natalie had already agreed.”

My hands went cold.

Lorraine had been planning to use our home to help Paige purchase an apartment.

And apparently, neither woman had considered asking me.

Part 6: The Thirty-Thousand-Dollar Secret

Over the following days, the lender’s investigation identified an email account associated with Paige.

The documents had been submitted electronically, and investigators were reviewing the account records and questionable signatures.

Meredith helped me protect my ownership interest while the matter was examined.

Meanwhile, Preston stopped giving his mother and sister money.

Lorraine responded by contacting him through her attorney.

She wanted me to describe the skillet incident as an unfortunate misunderstanding.

I refused.

Then she threatened to reveal something Preston had kept from me.

That evening, he came to my apartment carrying a folder.

“Natalie, there’s something I should have told you years ago.”

Inside was a bank statement from four years earlier.

It showed a $30,000 transfer from our joint savings account to Lorraine.

I remembered that period vividly.

We were preparing to buy our house, and Preston had told me an unexpected business expense had reduced our available savings.

To cover the difference, I had contributed more money from the inheritance my grandmother left me.

Now I understood why.

“You gave your mother thirty thousand dollars and told me it was a business expense?”

He nodded.

“She said she had debts and was embarrassed. I thought I was helping her.”

“Did she repay us?”

“No.”

I looked down at the statement.

For years, Lorraine had criticized me for spending money on small personal purchases.

She had questioned my contribution to the household.

And all that time, she had accepted money that belonged to both of us.

“Preston, you didn’t just give her money. You let me make financial decisions based on something that wasn’t true.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know. I’m going to repay every dollar from my own savings and earnings.”

I believed he meant it.

But I couldn’t immediately forgive him.
