Meghan Markle has shared a deeply personal health update, speaking about a rare and dangerous condition she faced after giving birth. The Duchess of Sussex revealed her experience with postpartum preeclampsia in the first episode of her new podcast Confessions of a Female Founder.
The 43-year-old described the diagnosis as a “life-or-death” scare, explaining that she tried to keep going for the sake of her children despite the seriousness of her condition. “The world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly,” Markle said. “And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people – mostly for your children — but those things are huge medical scares.”
Postpartum preeclampsia is a rare complication that can appear shortly after childbirth, marked by high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine. Without treatment, it can lead to seizures and other severe outcomes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
A new chapter for Meghan
Markle’s revelation came during a candid conversation with Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of dating app Bumble, who had also suffered the same condition. Herd described it as “life or death” and recalled watching Meghan’s first public appearance after giving birth to Archie. “I’ll never forget the image of you after you delivered Archie,” she said. “The whole world was waiting for his debut, and I was like, ‘How is this woman doing this? Putting on heels, standing in front of cameras, while I could barely face a food delivery in a robe.’”
The podcast marks Meghan’s return to the medium after her Spotify series Archetypes ended following 12 episodes. It also comes as the duchess pursues other solo ventures, including her recently rebranded lifestyle company As Ever, whose first product launch sold out in just an hour. She continues to expand her presence in entertainment as well, with her Netflix show With Love, Meghan confirmed for a second season.
