Happy Soul Moral Stories

My 10-Year-Old Daughter Suddenly Stopped Answering My Calls for Four Days—When I Went to My Ex-Wife’s House, the Blinds Were Closed, Her Car Was Gone, and a Neighbor Told Me Something Had Seemed Wrong for Days, but After I Entered the Backyard and Finally Found My Daughter, She Clung to My Shirt and Whispered, “Dad, There’s Something You Need to Know About Mom”

Part 3 of 3

And she had been too afraid to tell me.

Police also recovered enough data from Rachel’s damaged laptop to determine that Derek had discovered communication between Rachel and the attorney shortly before she disappeared.

The traffic-camera image gave them a direction.

Additional cameras gave them another intersection.

Then a gas station.

Derek’s truck kept moving east.

By that afternoon, police had narrowed the search to an area outside the city.

I stayed at the hospital with Lily.

There was nothing useful I could do by following patrol cars around Ohio.

So I sat beside my daughter and waited.

At 6:43 that evening, Detective Mills called.

“Matt, they found Rachel.”

I stood so quickly my chair hit the wall.

“Is she alive?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Lily was watching me from the bed.

I nodded at her.

“They found Mom.”

She stared at me.

“Alive?”

“Alive.”

She covered her mouth with both hands.

They Found Her Behind a Locked Door

Rachel had been found in an abandoned house that belonged to one of Derek’s relatives.

Police located her in a locked basement storage room.

She was exhausted and dehydrated, but conscious.

Derek was spotted less than an hour later driving away from the area.

Officers stopped him before he reached the interstate.

He was arrested.

There was no dramatic confrontation that I witnessed.

No speech.

No explanation.

Just a phone call telling me he was in custody.

The bags in the swimming pool suddenly made sense.

Derek had dumped Rachel’s phone, laptop, medication, documents, clothes and personal belongings into the water.

It looked as though she had cleared out her life and disappeared.

Except he hadn’t known about the envelope beneath the desk drawer.

And he hadn’t known traffic cameras had recorded Rachel sitting beside him.

Rachel spent several days in the hospital.

I didn’t see her until doctors allowed it.

When I walked into her room, she looked smaller than I remembered.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she asked:

“Where’s Lily?”

“With my sister. She’s safe.”

Rachel nodded.

Her eyes filled, but she looked away.

“Does she hate me?”

“No.”

“She should.”

I pulled the chair closer.

“Rachel.”

“I knew I needed to leave.”

She stared at her hands.

“I kept thinking I needed one more week. One more document. One more conversation with the lawyer.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

She was quiet for a long time.

“Because I thought you’d use it against me.”

I frowned.

“Use what?”

“That I married him. That I let Lily live there.”

She finally looked at me.

“I thought you’d decide I was a terrible mother and take her from me.”

I wanted to tell her that was ridiculous.

Then I remembered every cold custody conversation we had ever had.

Every time I had accused her of being defensive.

Every time she had accused me of trying to control things.

Maybe her fear wasn’t logical.

But it hadn’t appeared from nowhere.

“I should’ve asked more questions too.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Matt—”

“She didn’t want to go back to your house.”

I looked down.

“She held onto me in the driveway, and I still left.”

Neither of us said anything after that.

There wasn’t much to say.

“Why Didn’t You Come on Friday?”

Lily came home with me when she left the hospital.

For the first few weeks, she slept with the hallway light on.

If I walked outside without telling her, she came looking for me.

She wouldn’t go near a swimming pool.

Rachel began counseling and slowly started seeing Lily again.

At first, their visits were short.

Then longer.

Nobody tried to force things back to normal.

One evening, about a month after everything happened, Lily and I were making grilled cheese in the kitchen.

Without looking at me, she asked:

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Why didn’t you come on Friday?”

My hand stopped over the skillet.

I turned off the burner.

There were a dozen answers available.

It was your mom’s custody time.

Derek said you were grounded.

I didn’t know.

I didn’t want to overreact.

Every one of them sounded worse in my head.

So I sat across from her.

“Because I made a mistake.”

She looked at me.

“I thought waiting was the responsible thing to do.”

“Even when I didn’t answer?”

“Yes.”

I swallowed.

“And I was wrong.”

Lily picked at the edge of her sandwich.

Then she said something I still think about.

“I was calling you in my head.”

I reached across the table.

She put her hand in mine.

“I’m sorry I didn’t hear you sooner.”

One Year Later

Derek eventually faced multiple criminal charges connected to what happened to Rachel and Lily. The recordings, messages and documents Rachel had saved helped establish what had been happening inside that house long before I climbed the fence.

Rachel moved into a small apartment.

She and Lily rebuilt their relationship slowly.

Not perfectly.

Slowly.

A year after that Tuesday afternoon, Lily was standing in my kitchen making cupcakes.

She had flour on her nose and frosting on one sleeve.

Through the window behind her, I could see the neighborhood pool at the end of our street.

Months earlier, she wouldn’t even walk past it.

Now she could.

She still didn’t want to swim.

That was fine.

I had spent too much time believing that responsible parents waited for certainty before reacting.

Now I paid attention to smaller things.

A suddenly quiet car ride.

A game she stopped playing.

A hug that lasted longer than usual.

A request not to go somewhere.

Because sometimes a child never says, “I’m scared.”

Sometimes she just holds onto you in a driveway and hopes you understand.
