Part 2 of 3

“Leave,” she said.

He stared at her.

“You will regret speaking to me like that.”

Paige opened the front door.

“Maybe. But I already regret staying silent.”

The Black Binder

One week later, Paige returned to the family home with her father to collect clothing, documents and Maisie’s belongings.

Corbin was at work.

He had moved Paige’s dresses, diplomas, architectural models and personal photographs into storage boxes in the garage. Several boxes had been placed near a leaking window.

Her university portfolio was damp.

A framed photograph from Maisie’s birth was cracked.

Douglas wanted to confront Corbin immediately, but Paige asked him to wait outside while she searched for her professional certificates.

Inside Corbin’s home office, she noticed a black binder behind several tax folders.

At first, the pages appeared to contain ordinary company records.

Then she saw repeated monthly transfers to a woman named Kendra Vale.

Kendra was Maisie’s kindergarten teacher.

The payments included rent for an apartment in uptown Charlotte, designer clothing, weekend hotel reservations and medical expenses from a private women’s clinic.

At the bottom of the binder, Paige found an ultrasound image.

Twelve weeks.

Her hands began to shake.

She remembered how Kendra often stayed after school to discuss Maisie’s behavior with Corbin. She remembered seeing the teacher’s name on a restaurant receipt and believing Corbin’s explanation that it had been a school fundraiser.

Paige photographed every page.

As she closed the binder, her phone rang.

It was Corbin.

“I know you are at the house,” he said. “We should talk before lawyers become involved.”

“Where are my university certificates?”

“Probably in storage. Paige, I have made mistakes, but we can repair this.”

She looked at the ultrasound photograph.

“Does Kendra help repair marriages as well as manage school events?”

There was silence.

Then Corbin lowered his voice.

“Whatever you think you found, you do not understand the situation.”

“For the first time in years, I think I understand it perfectly.”

The Woman Who Kept Copies

Paige contacted a family-law attorney named Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca reviewed the photographs and explained that Corbin’s construction company had been created after the marriage. If he was using company funds for personal expenses or hiding marital assets, the transactions could become important in the divorce.

However, they needed more than photographs of a few statements.

Two days later, Paige received a message from an unknown number.

“My name is Naomi Pierce. I was Corbin’s senior accountant. He has been preparing for your divorce for two years. I have the original records.”

Paige met Naomi in a quiet coffee shop near Freedom Park.

Naomi looked exhausted. She placed a flash drive on the table.

“I am not asking you for money,” she said. “I only want you to know what he has been doing.”

The files revealed a carefully organized plan.

For almost three years, Corbin had been transferring company funds into businesses connected to Lorraine and one of his cousins. He created false debts, undervalued equipment and moved profitable contracts into separate entities.

Public records made the construction company appear nearly insolvent.

Private records showed millions of dollars under the family’s control.

“When did this begin?” Paige asked.

“Shortly after you mentioned returning to architecture,” Naomi answered. “He said that if you ever left him, you would not receive a single brick from the company.”

Paige remembered the evening clearly.

A former supervisor had offered her a part-time project. She had mentioned it over dinner.

Corbin smiled and poured her a glass of wine.

“You have been away too long,” he said. “You would embarrass yourself trying to compete with people who never stopped working.”

That night, Paige had cried quietly in the bathroom.

While she questioned her own abilities, Corbin had begun planning how to remove her from the life they had built together.

Naomi opened another folder.

It contained messages between Corbin and Kendra, hotel records and photographs.

Their relationship had lasted nearly three years.

Then Naomi played an audio recording.

Corbin’s voice filled the small space between them.

“Maisie saw us in the parking lot. Tell her it is an adult secret. If she tells Paige, her mother will become upset, and it will be her fault.”

Paige stopped breathing.

“My daughter knew?”

Naomi nodded.

“Kendra mentioned it in messages. Corbin frightened Maisie into staying quiet.”

Suddenly, Paige understood the nightmares.

Maisie had started waking in the middle of the night several months earlier. She had become anxious before school and had begun drawing family pictures with one person standing far from everyone else.

Paige had assumed the child was tired or adjusting to kindergarten.

In reality, her daughter had been carrying an adult secret she never should have been given.

The Secret That Was Hurting a Child

The school counselor found Maisie sitting beneath a table in the reading room.

She was holding a torn family drawing.

The figure representing Corbin had been colored over with a dark crayon.

When Paige knelt beside her, Maisie began to cry.

“I was bad, Mommy.”

“You are not bad.”

“I saw Daddy holding Miss Kendra. He said if I told you, you would get sick because of me.”

Paige gathered her daughter into her arms.

“Listen carefully, sweetheart. Adults are responsible for their choices. Children are never responsible for protecting adult secrets.”

“Is that why we do not live with Daddy?”

Paige chose her words carefully.

“We do not live with him because I decided our home should be a place where nobody feels afraid or unimportant.”

“Does Daddy still love me?”

Paige held her tighter.

“Your father’s choices belong to him. But nothing you saw, said or did caused any of this.”

That evening, Paige asked Corbin to meet her in a public café.

Rebecca sat two tables away.

Corbin arrived wearing the same expensive watch Paige had given him on their seventh anniversary.

He looked tired but still confident.

“This has gone far enough,” he said. “We both made emotional decisions.”

Paige placed her phone on the table and played the audio.

Corbin’s face lost its color.

“That recording was taken out of context.”

“What context makes it acceptable to frighten a five-year-old into protecting your relationship?”

“Kendra and I made a mistake.”

“A mistake happens once. You built an apartment, a second financial life and a plan to leave me with nothing.”

Corbin leaned forward.

“Do you want to destroy me?”

Paige slid a proposed divorce agreement across the table.

She requested primary custody of Maisie, financial support based on Corbin’s true income, her legal share of marital assets and recognition of her contribution to the business.
