Part 2 of 3

His picture stayed folded against his chest.

And I began remembering things I had previously dismissed.

The unexplained hotel expenses. The evenings Grant had stopped answering his phone. The sudden schedule changes. The way he had become distant whenever I tried discussing our future.

I had explained away every warning because I trusted the man I married.

Now I wondered how much of our life had been built around stories he had carefully invented.

A Message That Revealed Even More

About twenty minutes before landing, my phone vibrated.

It was a message from Grant.

I need to tell you something important when I get home. Please don’t make any plans for Sunday evening.

I stared at the screen.

He still had no idea Owen and I were aboard his airplane.

I typed a reply.

Does this have anything to do with Brianna?

Several minutes passed.

Then his answer appeared.

How do you know that name?

My heart sank further.

I replied with only four words.

We need to talk.

He called immediately, but I declined the call.

Another message arrived.

Natalie, please don’t jump to conclusions. I’ll explain everything.

I looked at Owen, who was quietly tracing the letters on his drawing.

For the first time, I understood that the greatest disappointment of this trip wasn’t what Grant had done to me.

It was what our son was being forced to witness.

I placed my phone in my purse and held Owen’s hand until the airplane landed.

The Moment All His Stories Collapsed

After we arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, I waited until most passengers had left before gathering our belongings.

Owen followed silently beside me.

Near the front of the aircraft, Grant was speaking with a blonde woman wearing an elegant cream-colored coat.

She was holding a bouquet of pale pink roses.

Brianna.

Grant smiled warmly at her, then leaned forward and kissed her.

Owen stopped walking.

“Mommy, is that the lady Daddy was talking about?”

Before I could respond, Grant turned toward us.

His smile disappeared.

“Natalie? Owen? What are you doing here?”

I kept my voice calm.

“Your son wanted to see his father fly an airplane. We thought it would be a wonderful surprise.”

Grant glanced around nervously.

“You should have told me you were coming.”

“Would that have changed your announcement?”

He said nothing.

Brianna stepped forward, looking between us.

“I’m sorry. Did you say you’re his wife?”

I nodded.

“Yes. We’ve been married for eleven years.”

Her expression changed.

“Grant told me you separated last year.”

I looked directly at my husband.

“That’s interesting, because we celebrated our anniversary together four months ago.”

Brianna took a step backward.

“You told me you were living in separate rooms until the paperwork was finished.”

“We live in the same bedroom,” I answered quietly.

Then Brianna noticed Owen.

“And you have a son?”

Grant closed his eyes.

“Brianna, please. Let me explain.”

She shook her head.

“You told me you didn’t have children.”

That was the moment I stopped thinking about my marriage.

My husband hadn’t simply concealed another relationship.

He had erased our little boy from the story he was telling someone else.

Owen stood beside me, holding the picture he had made with so much love.

And Grant couldn’t bring himself to look at him.

The Question That Silenced His Father

Grant asked whether we could discuss everything privately.

I agreed that our son shouldn’t have to listen to an argument in a busy airport.

But before we could move away, Owen spoke.

“Daddy, did you tell that lady you don’t have a little boy?”

Grant’s expression softened.

“Owen, buddy, it’s complicated.”

“But you do have me.”

“Of course I do.”

Owen looked down.

“Then why didn’t you tell her?”

Grant struggled to find an answer.

Finally, he said, “I made some bad decisions, son. I’m sorry.”

Owen carefully unfolded his drawing.

The blue airplane was slightly wrinkled now.

“I made this for you because I thought you were the best dad in the sky.”

He held it out.

Grant reached for it, but Owen hesitated.

“Do you still want it?”

My husband nodded.

“Of course I do, buddy.”

Owen handed it over.

“Okay. But I don’t think I want to call you the best dad today.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

Brianna quietly placed the flowers on an empty chair.

“I need some time away from you, Grant,” she said. “You should have told me the truth about your family.”

Then she walked away.

Grant started to follow her, stopped, and turned toward us.

For a moment, he looked like a man who had suddenly realized how much he stood to lose.
